Silicon Nanocrystals on the Surface of Standard Si Wafers: A Micro-Raman Investigation

The presence of silicon nanocrystals on the surface of standard wafer samples of Si, conserved under “usual” laboratory conditions, has been investigated by micro-Raman analysis, performed for increasing intensity of laser irradiation. The poor thermal connection of such small crystals to the Si wafer bulk allows for the appearance of two well distinct Raman bands in the spectra, with a different evolution for increasing irradiance levels: the first, expected, due to bulk silicon response, the other one assignable to the silicon nanocrystals. A careful analysis of peak position and linewidth has been carried out, both for the Raman contribution from the nanocrystals, reaching high temperatures under irradiation (up to 1400 K), and for the one from the “bulk” Si, which remains practically at room temperature. The analysis of the spectra and the comparison with previous studies on nc-Si suggest that such nanocrystals do not have a very small size, so that the observed changes of spectral parameters are mainly due to laser heating, rather than quantum confinement effects. In any case, we performed also an independent size deter-mination by AFM mapping, confirming a size distribution well peaked be-tween 50 and 100 nm. As a corollary from this analysis, we get the indication that apparent linewidths and positions, at low laser irradiation levels, can be slightly changed in the presence of nc-Si on the surface. It is due to the differ-ent thermal responses of bulk and nanocrystalline components, inducing un-resolved separate components;this hypothesis suggests reanalysing some previous experimental data, in particular for many Raman spectra of Si col-lected at “room temperature”.

Dear Editor,Rauvolfia tetraphylla(aka the Devil pepper)(Supplemental Figure 1)is a well-known medicinal plant that produces monoterpenoid indole alkaloids(MIAs).This MIA biosynthesis occurs in several organs,including leaves,stems,fruit,and roots,which accumulate the famous antiarrhythmic ajmaline(Kumar et al.2016a,2016b;Kumara et al.,2019).MIAs are natural products notably involved in plant adaptation to the environment and defense against *** mainly results from their high biological activities,which also explain their pharmacological properties.

In this paper we analyze the downward random motion of a particle in a vertical, bounded, Sierpinski gasket G, where at each layer either absorption or delays are considered. In the case of motion with absorption the explicit distribution of the position of the descending particle in the pre-gasket Gn is obtained and the limiting case of the Sierpinski gasket discussed. For the delayed downward motion we derive a representation of the random time needed to arrive at the base of Gn in terms of independent binomial random variables （containing the contribution of delays at different layers with different geometrical structures）.

The recent global spread of the pandemic underscores the necessity of seeking new materials effective against microorganisms. Nanotechnology offers avenues for developing multifunctional materials. In this study, alpha-titanium phosphate (α-TiP) nanoparticles were synthesized and treated with silver salt to enhance their antimicrobial properties. The physicochemical characteristics and antimicrobial activity were evaluated. It was revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis that the structural integrity of α-TiP was influenced by ethylenediamine and silver ions. Distinct degradation profiles for each chemical modification were shown by thermogravimetric analysis. Infrared spectroscopy detected shifts and new absorption peaks in the spectra depending on the type of modification. Energy dispersive spectroscopy confirmed the disaggregation of α-TiP galleries following the addition of silver salt, which increased their effectiveness against microorganisms. Notably, only the sample treated with silver ions exhibited antimicrobial action. Antimicrobial activity was tested against the bacteria of medical importance Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria momocytogenes and the yeast Candida albicans. All microorganisms were inhibited by sample containing silver. Minor inhibition was observed against the Gram-positive bacteria L. monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus, while the greatest inhibition occurred against the fungus (yeast) C. albicans. The results revealed a potential application of the nanoparticles for control of microorganisms in public health.

Intraepithelial lymphocytes(IELs)are immune cells located in the epithelium of the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract that typically show a CD3-positive *** are T lymphocytes that are involved in the primary immune response to several luminal antigens,such as food proteins and infectious *** this reason,their increase may be pathogenetic in several diseases,the most important being celiac ***,an increase above 25 IELs/100 enterocytes in the duodenum,which is considered the cutoff value for celiac disease,may occur in several conditions,such as nonceliac gluten sensitivity,food allergy,Helicobacter pylori(***)infection,gastroenteritis,and even irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).Therefore,the generic term“microscopic enteritis”or“duodenal lymphocytosis”has been proposed for this condition.

Background:The activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex reduces the cochlear gain,which is manifested perceptually as decreased auditory ***,it has remained unclear whether the extent of this suppression varies according to the cochlear region *** we aims to assess the magnitude of contralateral efferent suppression across human cochlea,at low levels,and its impact on hearing ***:Assuming that acoustic stimulation activates the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex,we evaluated the magnitude of the suppressive effect as a function of frequency in 17 subjects with normal *** thresholds were measured for bursts tones of various durations(10,100,and 500 ms)and frequencies(250,500,1000,4000,and 8000 Hz)in the presence or absence of contralateral white noise at 60 d B ***:We found that contralateral noise raised the absolute threshold for the burst tones *** effect was greater at lower than higher frequencies(3.85 d B at 250 Hz vs.2.22 d B at 8000 Hz).Conclusions:Our findings suggest that in humans,the magnitude of this suppression varies according to the cochlear region stimulated,with a greater effect towards the apex(lower frequencies)than the base(higher frequencies)of the cochlea.

Management of liver cirrhosis between primary care and specialists

This article discusses a practical, evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of liver cirrhosis by focusing on etiology, severity, presence of complications, and potential home-managed treatments. Relevant literature from 1985 to 2010 (PubMed) was reviewed. The search criteria were peer-reviewed full papers published in English using the following MESH headings alone or in combination: "ascites", "liver fibrosis", "cirrhosis", "chronic hepatitis", "chronic liver disease", "decompensated cirrhosis", "hepatic encephalopathy", "hypertransaminasemia", "liver transplantation" and "portal hypertension". Forty-nine papers were selected based on the highest quality of evidence for each section and type (original, randomized controlled trial, guideline, and review article), with respect to specialist setting (Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine) and primary care. Liver cirrhosis from any cause represents an emerging health issue due to the increasing prevalence of the disease and its complications worldwide. Primary care physicians play a key role in early identification of risk factors, in the management of patients for improving quality and length of life, and for preventing complications. Specialists, by contrast, should guide specific treatments, especially in the case of complications and for selecting patient candidates for liver transplantation. An integrated approach between specialists and primary care physicians is essential for providing better outcomes and appropriate home care for patients with liver cirrhosis.

Male accessory gland inflammation prevalence in type 2 diabetic patients With symptoms possibly reflecting autonomic neuropathy

Male accessory gland inflammation or infection （MAGI） is a potentially underdiagnosed complication of type 2 diabetes （DM2）; specifically, we reported in a recent study that the frequency of MAGI was 43% among DM2 patients. In previous studies, we have demonstrated that diabetic autonomic neuropathy （DAN） is associated with a peculiar ultrasound characterization of the seminal vesicles （SVs） in DM2 patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of MAGI in two different categories of DM2 patients （i.e. patients with and without symptoms that possibly reflect DAN） and the respective ultrasound characterizations. Sixty DM2 patients with a mean （± s.e.m.） age of 42.0 ± 6.0 years （range： 34-47 years） were classified according to the presence or the absence of symptoms that could possibly reflect DAN （group A： DM2 with symptoms possibly reflecting DAN, n = 28 patients and group B： DM2 without symptoms possibly reflecting DAN, n = 32 patients）. The patients in Group A exhibited a significantly higher frequency of MAGI compared with those in group B patients （P 〈 0.05）; moreover, the Group A patients exhibited a significantly higher frequency of ultrasound signs suggestive of vesiculitis （P 〈 0.05）. Finally, the concentrations of lymphocytes but not the concentrations of the leukocytes in the semen were significantly higher （P 〈 0.05） in group A compared with group B.
