The field of biomaterials has advanced significantly in the past *** the growing need for high-throughput manufacturing and screening,the need for modular materials that enable streamlined fabrication and analysis of tissue engineering and drug delivery schema has *** are a powerful platform that have demonstrated promise in enabling these technologies without the need to modify a bulk *** building block paradigm of using microparticles within larger scaffolds to control cell ratios,growth factors and drug release holds *** microparticles(GmPs)are a well-established platform for cell,drug and growth factor *** of the challenges in using GmPs though is the limited ability to modify the gelatin *** the present work,we hypothesized that by thiolating gelatin before microparticle formation,a versatile platform would be created that preserves the cytocompatibility of gelatin,while enabling post-fabrication *** thiols were not found to significantly impact the physicochemical properties of the ***,the thiolated GmPs were demonstrated to be a biocompatible and robust platform for mesenchymal stem cell ***,the thiolated particles were able to be covalently modified with a maleimide-bearing fluorescent dye and a peptide,demonstrating their promise as a modular platform for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications.

This paper is focused on calibration of an intelligent network simulation model （INS1m） with reallife transportation network to analyse the INSIm＇s feasibility in simulating commuters＇ travel choice behaviour under the influence of real-time integrated multimodal traveller information （ImTI）. A transportation network model for the central and western areas of Singapore was simulated in PARAmICS and integrated with INSIm expert system by means of an application programming interface to form the INSIm. Upon calibration, INSIm was able to realistically present complicated scenarios in which real-time ImTI was provided to commuters and the network performance measures being recorded.

Parallelized fluorescence imaging has been a long-standing pursuit that can address the unmet need for a comprehensive three-dimensional(3D)visualization of dynamical biological processes with minimal ***,the available approaches are limited to incomplete parallelization in only two dimensions or sparse sampling in three *** hereby develop a novel fluorescence imaging approach,called coded light-sheet array microscopy(CLAm),which allows complete parallelized 3D imaging without mechanical *** the concept of an“infinity mirror”,CLAm generates a light-sheet array with controllable sheet density and degree of ***,CLAm circumvents the common complications of multiple coherent light-sheet generation in terms of dedicated wavefront engineering and mechanical dithering/***,the encoding of multiplexed optical sections in CLAm allows the synchronous capture of all sectioned images within the imaged *** demonstrate the utility of CLAm in different imaging scenarios,including a light-scattering medium,an optically cleared tissue,and microparticles in fluidic *** can maximize the signal-to-noise ratio and the spatial duty cycle,and also provides a further reduction in photobleaching compared to the major scanning-based 3D imaging *** flexible implementation of CLAm regarding both hardware and software ensures compatibility with any light-sheet imaging modality and could thus be instrumental in a multitude of areas in biological research.

The surface roughness, hardness and tribological properties of tungsten (W) and tung- sten nitride (WN_x) thin films prepared by dc magnetron sputtering and reactive magnetron sputter- ing in Ar-N_2 gas mixtures have been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFm), nanoindenta- tion measurements and ball-on-disc wear testing. A pronounced surface roughness was observed only for films under compressive strains. The surface was flat under tension but rough under com- pression. Similar hardness with value about 20 GPa were observed in the W and WN_x (x=0.3) films. This is thought to be due to the fact the grains are restricted to a very small size in the coat- ings. The higher coefficients of friction (0.4 for W and 0.9 for WN_(0.3)) suggest that WN_(0.3) is not the optimum phase. Finally, discussions are made with tribological test results.

Comprehensive characterization of indoor airborne bacterial profile

This is the first detailed characterization of the airborne bacterial profiles in indoor environments. Two restaurants were selected for this study. Fifteen genera of bacteria were isolated from each restaurant and identified by three different bacterial identification systems including mIDI, Biolog and Riboprinter. The dominant bacteria of both restaurants were Gram-positive bacteria in which micrococcus and Bacillus species were the most abundant. most bacteria identified were representative species of skin and respiratory tract of human, and soil. Although the bacterial levels in these two restaurants were below the limit of the Hong Kong Indoor Air Quality Objective （HKIAQO） Level 1 standard （i.e., 〈 500 cfu/m^3）, the majority of these bacteria were opportunistic pathogens. These results suggested that the identity of airborne bacteria should also be included in the IAQ to ensure there is a safety guideline for the public.

In a homojunction device, a single organic layer assumes the multiple roles of hole, electron transportation, and emitter. Its ease in processing is highly desirable from the manufacturing point of view. In this paper, we shall describe the synthesis of a range of bipolar small molecules and conductive vinyl polymers for application in homojunction and heterojunction organic light emitting diodes（OLEDs）. The bipolar materials, in general, consist of three basic building blocks: an arylamine, a 1,3,4-oxadiazole, and a polycyclic aromatic moiety. The achievement of charge balance can be validated either by direct measurement of electron/hole mobility or indirectly via optimization of device properties.A series of conductive vinyl copolymers containing hole transporting N-（4-methoxyphenyl）-N-（4-vinylphenyl）naphthalen-1-amine（4meONPA） and electron transporting 2-phenyl-5-（4-vinylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（OXA）at different compositions was applied for heterojunction and homojunction OLEDs. For heterojunction devices employed the copolymers as the hole transporting layer and Alq3as the electron transporting and emitting layer,a maximum luminance and current efficiency of over 23000 cd/m2and 4.2 cd/A（PL of Alq3）, respectively, were achieved at the charge balance composition. Homojunction devices for the copolymers were demonstrated by the addition of rubrene as a dopant. The single layer devices at the optimal copolymer composition has ca 1500 cd/m2and 0.74 cd/A.

The mechanism of urea's action in protein denaturation remains largely *** provide an experimental basis for molecular dynamics(mD)simulations on urea-protein interactions,we investigated the effect of urea on human intestinal fatty acid binding protein(hIFABP)by nuclear magnetic resonance(NmR).Hydrogen-deuterium exchange(HDX)rates at2 m urea indicate that urea affects hIFABP in a residue-specific manner via direct urea-protein interactions and preferentially weakens hydrogen bonds between highly protected ***-specific effects of urea on NmR peak intensities and chemical shifts further support the presence of direct urea-protein ***(2D)water-rotating frame Overhauser enhancement(ROE)data shows one protein-bound water molecule in contact with Val66 and Trp82,one putative bound water molecule in interaction with Thr76 and E-F loop,and that urea at low concentrations cannot displace these protein-bound water *** urea-nuclear Overhauser effect(NOE)experiments using 15N-urea further show no tightly protein-bound urea *** results thus suggest specific,but weak or transient,urea-protein interactions,supporting the direct interaction model of urea denaturation.

In many areas of applied statistics, confidence intervals for the mean of the population are of interest. Confidence intervals are typically constructed as-suming normality although non-normally distributed data are a common occurrence in practice. Given a large enough sample size, confidence intervals for the mean can be constructed by applying the Central Limit Theorem or by the bootstrap method. Another commonly used method in practice is the back-transformation method, which takes on the following three steps. First, apply a transformation to the data such that the transformed data are normally distributed. Second, obtain confidence intervals for the transformed mean in the usual manner, which assumes normality. Third, apply the back- transformation to obtain confidence intervals for the mean of the original, non-transformed distribution. The parametric Wald method and a small sample likelihood-based third order method, which can address non-normality, are also reviewed in this paper. Our simulation results suggest that common approaches such as back-transformation give erroneous and misleading results even when the sample size is large. However, the likelihood-based third order method gives extremely accurate results even when the sample size is small.

Objective:To evaluate the effects of Ving Tsun(VT)sticking-hand training on upper-limb joint position sense and muscular performance in community-dwelling middle-aged and older ***:Thirty-three adults were randomly allocated to either a VT group or a control *** VT group received VT sticking-hand training twice per week for 3 *** were taken before and after the intervention *** primary outcome was elbow-joint repositioning error,which was measured by an elbow-joint passive positioning and active repositioning test using a universal *** outcomes were upper-limb muscles'peak force and time taken to reach peak force as measured by a hand-held ***:No significant time,group or time-by-group interaction effects were found for elbow-joint repositioning error or upper-limb muscle peak force *** flexor time to peak force decreased by 33.8%from pre-test to post-test in the VT group(P=0.007).Shoulder abductor,internal and external rotator,and elbow extensor times to peak force decreased by 30.0%-35.9%in the VT%roup(Py 30.4%-37.1%in the control group(Pmprove elbow-joint position sense or the maximum strength of upper-limb muscles in middle-aged and older ***,VT can improve shoulder flexor muscles'time to reach peak force in these *** had no obvious effect on the time required to reach peak force in other shoulder muscles and elbow extensors.
