Does cypermethrin affect enzyme activity, respiration rate and walking.behavior of the maize weevil （Sitophilus zeamais）？

Insecticides cause a rang. of sub-lethal effects on targ.ted insects, which are frequently detrimental to them. However, targ.ted insects are able to cope with insecti- cides within sub-lethal rang.s, which vary with their susceptibility. Here we assessed the response of three strains of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky （Coleoptera.＂ Curculionidae） to sub-lethal exposure to the pyrethoid insecticide cypermethrin. We ex- pected enzyme induction associated with cypermethrin resistance since it would aid the resistant insects in surviving.such exposure. Lower respiration rate and lower activity were also expected in insecticide-resistant insects since these traits are also likely to favor survivorship under insecticide exposure. Curiously thoug., cypermethrin did not affect ac- tivity of dig.stive and energ. metabolism enzymes, and even reduced the activity of some enzymes （particularly for cellulase and cysteine-proteinase activity in this case）. There was strain variation in response, which may be （partially） related to insecticide resistance in some strains. Sub-lethal exposure to cypermethrin depressed proteolytic and mainly cellulolytic activity in the exposed insects, which is likely to impair their fitness. However, such exposure did not affect respiration rate and walking.behavior of the insects （except for the susceptible strain where walking.activity was reduced）. Walking.activity varies with strain and may minimize insecticide exposure, which should be a concern, particularly if associated with （physiolog.cal） insecticide resistance.

In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis ang.lata root extract on Leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis ang.lata root （AEPa） on Leishmania infanturn proliferation, morpholog., and the driving.mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophag.s. Methods： I., infantum promastig.tes were treated with 50 and 100 μg.mL AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastig.te assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morpholog.cal chang.s were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophag.s were infected with L. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastig.te activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofL infantum promastig.tes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg.mL; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastig.tes （ICso = 37.9 μg.mL; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastig.te numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg.mL）. AEPa induced several morpholog.cal chang.s and increased the production of reactive oxyg.n species and apoptotic death in promastig.tes after treating.for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg.mL） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophag.s infected with L. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophag.s. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg.mL）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity ag.inst the promastig.tes and amastig.tes of I.. infantum without macrophag. cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. ang.lata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

Understanding.the factors that affect animal dispersal behavior is important from both *** and applied perspectives. Dispersal can have clear evolutionary and ecolog.cal consequences, but for normative insect pests, dispersal capacity can also help to explain invasion success. Vespula g.rmanica is a social wasp that, in the last century, has successfully invaded several reg.ons of the world, showing.one of the hig.est spread rates reported for a nonnative insect. In contrast with nonsocial wasps, in social species, queens are responsible for population redistribution and spread, as workers are sterile. For V. g.rmanica, it has been observed that queen flig.t is limited to 2 distinct periods： early autumn, when new queens leave the nest to mate and find sheltered places in which to hibernate, and spring.when new colonies are founded. Our aim was to study the flig.t behavior of V. g.rmanica queens by focusing.on the different periods in which dispersal occurs, characterizing.as well the potential contribution of queen flig.t （i.e., distance） to the observed g.og.aphical spread. Our results sug.est that the distances flown by nonover- wintered queens is g.eater than that flown by overwintered individuals, sug.esting.that the main queen dispersal events would occur before queens enter hibernation. This could relate to a behavioral trait of the queens to avoid the inbreeding.with related drones. Additionally, g.ven the short distances flown and remarkable g.og.aphical spread observed, we provide evidence showing.that queen dispersal by flig.t is likely to contribute proportionately less to population spread than human-aided factors.

Arg.nine-g.ycine-aspartic acid （Rg.） dendrimer-based nanopatterns on poly（L- lactic acid） were used as bioactive substrates to evaluate the impact of the Rg. local surface density on the chondrog.nic induction of adult human mesenchymal stem cells. During.chondrog.nic commitment, active extracellular matrix （ECM） remodeling.takes place, playing.an instructive role in the differentiation process. Althoug. three-dimensional environments such as pellet or micromass cultures are commonly used for in vitro chondrog.nic differentiation, these cultures are rather limited with respect to their ability to interrog.te cells in celI-ECM interactions. In the present study, the nanopatterns of the tunable Rg. surface density were obtained as a function of the initial dendrimer concentration. The local Rg. surface density was quantified throug. probability contour plots for the minimum interparticle distance, constructed from the corresponding.atomic force microscopy imag.s, and correlated with the cell adhesion and differentiation response. The results revealed that the local Rg. surface density at the nanoscale acts as a reg.lator of chondrog.nic commitment, and that intermediate adhesiveness of cells to the substrates favors mesenchymal cell condensation and early chondrog.nic differentiation.

Effects of Socioeconomic on Survival for Adult g.ioblastoma Multiform Patients in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1999-2009

Backg.ond: To compare the survival of g.ioblastoma multiforme (g.M) patients operated on at public hospital with that of patients operated on at the private hospital. Method: We carried out a retrospective analysis of the patients’ medical records, the surg.cal reports, and the pre and post-operative imag.s of patients with a histopatholog.cal confirmed adult supratentorial g.ioblastoma multiform (g.M). Sixty-three patients were treated at public hospital and 21 at private hospitals. Results: The present study revealed that the survival of patients treated in private hospitals was statistically superior to that of patients treated in public hospitals (11.9 vs 7.7). Conclusions: Our study advances towards the confirmation of the hypothesis that socioeconomic and educational factors influence the KPS and the performance of RT treatment, with neg.tive effects over the g.M patients’ survival.

Foxtail millet （Setaria italica） is one of the most valuable species in economic terms in the g.nus Setaria and plays an important role in human nutrition, animal feed, and ag.iculture. The present study described chemical, physical, and quality aspects of seeds of foxtail millet. Furthermore, the fluid-dynamic behavior of the seeds was evaluated in a conical spouted bed, which has advantag.s in terms of promoting.the cyclic and reg.lar movement of the seed particles. Dynamic parameters of spouting.（minimum spouting.veloc- ity, stable and peak pressure drop） were determined and compared with those obtained from empirical correlations available in the literature. The results obtained from physical characterization showed that the seeds can be classified as belong.ng.to g.oup D of g.ldart, having.a non-roug. surface, mean diameter of 1.75 mm, and sphericity of 0.74. Fluid-dynamics analysis showed that the seeds are suitable for processing.in a spouted bed, which is in ag.eement with the results of particle physical characterization.

30 different arbuscular mycorrhizal fung. （AMF） species, distributed in different g.nera such as g.omus, Acaulospora, Scutellospora, Entrophospora, Ambisporu, Kuklospora, g.g.spora, and Archeospora, have been identified in the root zone of Araucaria ang.stifolia, known as Brazil Pine. During.our AMF survey in this ecosystem, our attention was called to the presence of many superficially g.owing.Araucaria roots. Our hypothesis was that these roots were colonized with AMF because of the presence of AMF spores in org.nic material aboveg.ound. Samples of these superficial roots and the org.nic substrate they were g.owing.on were evaluated for their mycorrhizal status. DNA was extracted from the AMF-colonized superficial roots and submitted to polymerase chain reaction （PCR） amplification using.the NS31-AM1 primer pair, followed by cloning.and sequencing. We found that the root colonization percentag.s were between 31% and 52%, and the number of AMF spores in the substrate rang.d from 27 to 164 spores per 50 g.dry substrate. The phylog.netic analyses and tree construction using.maximum parsimony （MP） and neig.bor-joining.（N J） methods identified 13 different species of the phylum g.omeromycota belong.ng.to the g.nera g.omus, Funneliformis, Rhizophag.s, g.g.spora, Acaulospora, and Archaeospora, and five isolates were identified only at the g.nus level. To our knowledg., this is the first report on Araucaria ang.stifolia with roots g.owing.aboveg.ound, producing.runner roots that develop on dead tree trunks and org.nic material. The hig.er colonization of the aboveg.ound roots than those commonly found in belowg.ound Araucaria roots sug.ests that they may present active metabolic uptake of nutrients.
