We read with interest the recently published paper by Chebaro et al.(1).The authors compared liver venous deprivation(LVD)and associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy(ALPPS)which are two novel techniques used to achieve increased hypertrophy of the future liver remnant(FLR)in view of extensive liver resections(2,3).

Invasive rats （Rattus spp.） are known to have pervasive impacts on island birds, particularly on their nesting success. To conserve or restore bird populations, numerous invasive rat control or eradication projects are undertaken on islands worldwide. However, such projects represent a huge investment and the decision-making process requires proper assessment of rat impacts. Here, we assessed the influence of two sympatric invasive rats （Rattus rattus and R. exulans） on native bird eggs in a New Caledonian rainforest, using artificial bird-nest monitoring. A total of 178 artificial nests containing two eggs of three different sizes were placed either on the ground or 1.5 m high and monitored at the start of the birds＇ breeding season. Overall, 12.4% of the nests were depredated during the first 7 days. At site 1, where nests were monitored during 16 days, 41.8% of the nests were depredated. The main predator was the native crow Corvus moneduloides, responsible for 62.9% of the overall predation events. Rats were responsible for only 22.9% of the events, and ate only small and medium eggs at both heights. Our experiment suggests that in New Caledonia, predation pressure by rats strengthens overall bird-nest predation, adding to that by native predators, Experimental rat control operations may allow reduced predation pressure on nests as well as the recording of biodiversity responses after rat population reduction.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major public health problems *** recent evidence suggests that the cellular reduction-oxidation(redox)imbalance leads to oxidative stress and subsequent occurrence and development of diabetes and related complications by regulating certain signaling pathways involved in p-cell dysfunction and insulin *** oxide species(ROS)can also directly oxidize certain proteins(defined as redox modification)involved in the diabetes *** are a number of potential problems in the clinical application of antioxidant therapies including poor solubility,storage instability and nonselectivity of *** antioxidant delivery systems may overcome pharmacokinetic and stability problem and improve the selectivity of scavenging *** have therefore focused on the role of oxidative stress and antioxidative therapies in the pathogenesis of diabetes *** therapeutic interventions against ROS and downstream targets are now possible and provide important new insights into the treatment of diabetes.

Microwave pretreatment for enhanced selective nitric acid pressure leaching of limonitic laterite

As clean energy,the microwave is commonly used to pretreat various *** this work,the microwave dielectric properties of limonitic laterite ore were measured by resonant cavity perturbation technique and the effects from microwave were systematically *** indicated that limonitic laterite had high microwave *** microwave pretreatment,the microstructure of the laterite became less aggregated and more porous and the main phase transformed from goethite to hematite that improved leaching in nitric acid(1.2 kg HNO3/kg ore);Ni,Co,Fe,and Mg extraction ratios were 95.2%,98.1%,1.8%and 15%,respectively,after leaching for 60 min at 200°C and 500 r/***,in the process of goethite to hematite by microwave pretreatment,the nickel-containing mineral is activated,which makes nickel be leached *** leaching process has high Ni extraction ratio compared to that without microwave(82%)and conventional pretreatment(90.4%).Therefore,microwave pretreatment of limonitic laterite before nitric acid pressure leaching is an effective way to improve the selectivity and extraction of the leach.

Fast transient events,such as the disintegration of liquid bodies or chemical reactions between radical species,involve various processes that may occur at different time ***,there are two alternatives for monitoring such events:burst-or high-speed *** imaging at ultrahigh speeds(~100 MHz to THz)allows for the capture of nature's fastest processes but only for a narrowly confined period of time and at a repetition rate of~10 *** long lasting,rapidly evolving transient events requires a significantly higher repetition rate,which is met by existing~kHz to 1 MHz high-speed imaging ***,the use of such systems eliminates the possibility to observe dynamics occurring on the sub-microsecond time *** this paper,we present a solution to this technological gap by combining multiplexed imaging with high-speed sensor technology,resulting in temporally resolved,high-spatial-resolution image series at two simultaneous time *** further demonstrate how the collection of such data opens up the tracking of rapidly evolving structures up to MHz burst rates over long durations,allowing,for the first time,to our knowledge,the extraction of acceleration fields acting upon the liquid bodies of an atomizing spray in two dimensions at k Hz frame rates.

Ever present hurdles for the discovery of new drugs for cancer therapy have necessitated the development of the alternative strategy of drug repurposing,the development of old drugs for new therapeutic *** strategy with a cost-effective way offers a rare opportunity for the treatment of human neoplastic disease,facilitating rapid clinical *** an increased understanding of the hallmarks of cancer and the development of various data-driven approaches,drug repurposing further promotes the holistic productivity of drug discovery and reasonably focuses on target-defined antineoplastic ***“treasure trove”of non-oncology drugs should not be ignored since they could target not only known but also hitherto unknown vulnerabilities of ***,different from targeted drugs,these old generic drugs,usually used in a multi-target strategy may bring benefit to *** this review,aiming to demonstrate the full potential of drug repurposing,we present various promising repurposed non-oncology drugs for clinical cancer management and classify these candidates into their proposed administration for either mono-or drug combination *** also summarize approaches used for drug repurposing and discuss the main barriers to its uptake.
