Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether magnesium sulfate decreases postoperative pain and.a.algesic consumption. Study design: Women who underwent elective cesarean delivery were randomized into groups according to high-dose magnesium sulfate (50 mg/kg load.a.d 2 g/h), lowdose magnesium sulfate (25 mg/kg load.a.d 1 g/h), or placebo. Before the delivery, the dose of patient-controlled opioid that was used.a.d the visual analogs of pain during the first 48 hours after delivery and.a. 6 weeks were assessed. Results: Forty-two women were assigned randomly to the high-dose arm; 38 women were assigned to the low-dose magnesium arms, and 40 women were assigned to the control arm. The cumulative opioid use (P = .636); pain scores at 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours at rest (P = .786) and with movement (P = .179); the use of analgesics after hospital discharge (P = .711); and wound pain with movement (P = .429) or pressure (P = .144) after 6 weeks were similar. Conclusion: Magnesium sulfate does not reduce the severity of short-term or long-term (6 weeks) pain after cesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the amniotic fluid index (AFI) with the single deepest pocket technique along with the other components of the biophysical profile (BPP) in predicting an adverse pregnancy outcome. METHOdS: Prospective, randomized trial of amniotic fluid.a.sessment by AFI or single deepest pocket during a BPP. Cesarean delivery for fetal distress was the primary outcome evaluated. RESULTS: The AFI was used in 273 pregnancies and the single deepest pocket in 264. The AFI significandy increased the number of pregnancies labeled.a. oligohyd.a.nios, 102 women (38%) compared with 46 women (17%; P dds ratio (OR) = 2.84, 95%confidence interval 1.90-4.25 in the single deepest pocket group. There was no difference in the number of women with oligohyd.a.nios in the AFI group, 16 of 102 (16%), undergoing a cesarean delivery for fetal intolerance of labor compared with the single deepest pocket group, 6 of 46 (13%; P = .676). More women with normal fluid by the AFI method (AFI >5), 20 of 170 (12%), underwent a cesarean delivery for fetal distress than the women with normal fluid by the single deepest pocket technique (2 cm ×1 cm pocket present) group, 12 of 218 (6%; P = .037, OR = 2.22, 95%confidence interval 1.05-4.70). CONCLUSION: The AFI offers no ad.a.tage in detecting adverse outcomes compared with the single deepest pocket when performed with the BPP. The AFI may cause more interventions by labeling twice as many at-risk pregnancies as having oligohyd.a.nios than with the single deepest pocket technique.

Study design Parturients who were admitted for delivery were assigned randomly to have the amniotic fluid.a.sessed either by amniotic fluid index or b y the presence of a 2 ×1 pocket. Results The amniotic fluid index was obtained in 499 pregnancies, and the 2 ×1 technique was performed in 501. Oligohyd.a.nio s was d.a.nosed in 25%of amniotic fluid index pregnancies versus 8%with the us e of the 2 ×1 pocket technique (P d to identify p atients who underwent an amnioinfusion for fetal distress (P=.864) or who experi enced variable (P=.208) or late decelerations (P=.210) that influenced delivery, fetal distress in labor (P=.220), caesarean delivery for fetal distress (P=.133 ), and.a.mission to neonatal intensive care unit (P=.686). Conclusion Neither th e amniotic fluid index nor the 2 ×1 pocket technique that was undertaken as a f etal admission test identi fies a pregnancy that is at risk for an adverse outco me.

Separation med.a.that combine the desired material properties within a single material for a given process remain an ongoing challenge for the gas separations in *** integration of porous solid.a.sorbents is difficult due to their limited volumetric capacity,whereas issues of volatility and high regeneration temperatures exist for liquid.a.ines and physical ***,we report a family of polymer liquids inspired by hyper-crosslinked polymers(HCPs),a class of highly swellable network *** with a chemically similar porous solid,the HCP-liquids demonstrate good volumetric capacity and improved selectivity of carbon dioxide over *** appears to be enhanced by intramolecular swelling of the HCP-liquids at elevated pressures,while guests are strongly rejected from the HCP-liquids at slightly elevated temperatures,leading to highly efficient *** of adsorption and specific heat capacity of the HCP-liquids are also low,further suggesting favourable process *** being easily prepared.a. scale,the presented HCP-liquids represent a promising step towards a material with the requisite properties to replace conventional scrubbing solvents to d.a.tically reduce the footprint and energy needs of gas separations.

Background: Previous research in both calves and other species has suggested n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) and β-glucans may have positive effects on immune function. This experiment measured performance,behaviour, metabolite and immunological responses to pre-weaning supplementation of dairy bull calves with n-3 PUFA in the form of fish oil and β-glucans derived from seaweed extract. 44 Holstein Friesian bull calves, aged 13.7± 2.5 d.a.d weighing 48.0 ± 5.8 kg were artificially reared using an electronic feeding system. Each calf was offered5 L(120 g/L) per day of milk replacer(MR) and.a.signed to one of four treatments included in the MR,(1) Control(CON);(2) 40 g n-3 PUFA per day(FO);(3) 1 g β-glucans per day(GL) and(4) 40 g n-3 PUFA per day & 1 g/d β-glucans(FOGL) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Milk replacer and concentrate was offered from d 0–62(pre-weaning),while concentrate provision continued for a further 31 d post-weaning period. Individ.a. daily feed intake and feeding behaviour was recorded throughout, while bodyweight and blood.a.alyte data were collected.a. regular ***: Overall mean concentrate dMI from d 0–93 was 1.39, 1.27, 1.00 and 0.72 kg/d for CON, FO, GL and FOGL calves, respectively(SEM = 0.037;P d with GL were significantly lighter(P d 62) and turnout to pasture(d 93) than un-supplemented calves, with a similar effect(P dent for calves receiving FO compared to un-supplemented contemporaries. The addition of surface acoustic wave(SAW)technologies to microfluidics has greatly ad.a.ced lab-on-a-chip applications due to their unique and powerful attributes,including high-precision manipulation,versatility,integrability,biocompatibility,contactless nature,and rapid ***,the development of SAW microfluidic devices is limited by complex and time-consuming micro/nanofabrication techniques and.a.cess to cleanroom facilities for multistep photolithography and vacuum-based *** simplify the fabrication of SAW microfluidic devices with customizable dimensions and functions,we utilized the additive manufacturing technique of aerosol jet *** successfully fabricated customized SAW microfluidic devices of varying materials,including silver nanowires,graphene,and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate(PEdOT:PSS).To characterize and compare the acoustic actuation performance of these aerosol jet printed SAW microfluidic devices with their cleanroom-fabricated counterparts,the wave displacements and resonant frequencies of the different fabricated devices were directly measured through scanning laser doppler ***,to exhibit the capability of the aerosol jet printed devices for lab-on-a-chip applications,we successfully conducted.a.oustic streaming and particle concentration ***,we demonstrated.a.novel solution-based,direct-write,single-step,cleanroom-free additive manufacturing technique to rapidly develop SAW microfluidic devices that shows viability for applications in the fields of biology,chemistry,engineering,and medicine.

Background There is an urgent need to identify natural bioactive compounds that can enhance gastrointestinal health and promote pig growth performance in the absence of pharmacological levels of zinc oxide(ZnO).The objectives of this study were to:1)compare the effects of mushroom powder supplemented with inorganic selenium(inSeMP)to mushroom powder enriched with organic selenium(orgSeMP)to pharmacological levels of ZnO on growth performance and faecal scores(FS)for the first 21 d post-weaning(Period 1);and 2)compare the molecular and microbial effects of inSeMP and orgSeMP in these pigs on d 39 post-weaning(Period 2).Methods In Period 1,pigs(3 pigs/pen;8 pens/treatment)were assigned to:(1)basal diet(control);(2)basal diet+zinc oxide(ZnO)(3100 mg/kg d 1–14,1550 mg/kg d 15–21);(3)basal diet+mushroom powder supplemented with inorganic selenium(inSeMP)containing selenium(selenite)content of 0.3 mg/kg feed;(4)basal diet+mushroom powder enriched with organic selenium(orgSeMP)containing selenium(selenocysteine)content of 0.3 mg/kg *** powders were included.a. 6.5 g/kg of *** In Period 1,there was no effect of diets on average daily gain(AdG)and gain:feed(G:F)ratio(P>0.05).The orgSeMP supplemented pigs had.a.lower average daily feed intake(AdFI)compared to all other groups(Pd pigs had reduced FS compared to the basal and mushroom group,while the orgSeMP supplemented pigs had lower FS compared to the basal group during the 21 d experimental period(Pd 2,there was no effect of diets on AdFI,AdG and G:F ratio(P>0.05).The orgSeMP supplementation increased the caecal abundance of bacterial members of the Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phylum,including Lactobacillus,Agathobacter,Roseburia,and Prevotella and decreased the abundance of Sporobacter compared to the basal group,while inSeMP increased the caecal abundance of Prevotella and decreased the caecal abundance of Sporobacter compared to the basal group(Pdietary
