Outburst of coal and gas represents a significant risk to the health and safety of mine personnel working in development and longwall production face *** have been over 878 outburst events recorded in twenty-two Australian underground coal *** outburst incidents have been associated with abnormal geological *** of Australian outburst incidents and mining experience in conditions where gas content was above current threshold levels are presented and *** experience suggests that for gas con-tent below 9.0 m^3/t,mining in carbon dioxide(cO2)rich seam gas conditions does not pose a greater risk of outburst than mining in cH4 rich seam gas *** experience also suggests that where no abnormal geological structures are present that mining in areas with gas content greater than the current accepted threshold levels can be undertaken with no discernible increase in outburst *** current approach to determining gas content threshold limits in Australian mines has been effective in prevent-ing injury from outburst,however operational experience suggests the current method is overly conser-vative and in some cases the threshold limits are low to the point that they provide no significant reduction in outburst *** factors that affect outburst risk,such as gas pressure,coal toughness and stress and geological structures are presently not incorporated into outburst threshold limits adopted in Australian *** factors and the development of an outburst risk index applicable to Australian underground coal mining conditions are the subject of ongoing research.

changes in rainfall regime and grazing pressure affect vegetation composition and diversity with ecological implications for savannahs. The savannah in East Africa has experienced increased livestock grazing and rainfall variability but the impacts associated with those changes on the herbaceous layer have rarely been documented. We investigated the effect of livestock grazing, rainfall manipulation and their interaction on the composition and diversity of the herbaceous community in the savannah for two years in Lambwe, Kenya. Rainfall manipulation plots were set up for vegetation sampling;these plots received either 50% more or 50% less rainfall than control plots. Simpson’s diversity and Bergere Parker indices were used to determine diversity changes and dominance respectively. The frequency of species was used to compute their abundance and their life forms as determined from the literature. Grazing significantly increased species diversity through suppression of dominant species. Rainfall manipulation had no significant impact on plant diversity in fenced plots, but rainfall reduction significantly reduced diversity in grazed plots. In contrast, rainfall manipulation had no impact on dominance in either fenced or grazed plots. The interaction of grazing and rainfall manipulation is complex and will require additional survey campaigns to create a complete picture of the implications for savannah structure and composition.

The ability to chemically modify monoclonal antibodies with the attachment of specific functional groups has opened up an enormous range of possibilities for the targeted treatment and diagnosis of cancer in the *** the number of such antibody-based drug candidates has increased,so too has the need for more stringent and robust preclinical evaluation of their in vivo performance to maximize the likelihood that time,research effort,and money are only spent developing the most effective and promising candidate molecules for translation to the *** with the development of antibody-drug conjugate(ADc)technology,several recent advances in preclinical research stand to greatly increase the experimental rigor by which promising candidate molecules can be *** include advances in preclinical tumor modeling with the development of patient-derived tumor organoid models that far better recapitulate many aspects of the human disease than conventional subcutaneous xenograft *** models are amenable to genetic manipulation,which will greatly improve our understanding of the relationship between ADc and antigen and stringently evaluate mechanisms of therapeutic ***,tumor development is often not visible in these in vivo *** discuss how the application of several preclinical molecular imaging techniques will greatly enhance the quality of experimental data,enabling quantitative pre-and post-treatment tumor measurements or the precise assessment of ADcs as effective *** our opinion,when taken together,these advances in preclinical cancer research will greatly improve the identification of effective candidate ADc molecules with the best chance of clinical translation and cancer patient benefit.

Thermochemical biomass gasification,followedby conversion of the produced syngas to fuels andelectrical power,is a promising energy *** of particulate matter(PM)and othercontaminants in the syngas is important to minimizedamage and ensure efficient operation of the engines itpowers and the fuels created from it.A dilution samplingsystem is demonstrated to quantify PM in syngas generatedfrom two gasification plants utilizing different biomassfeedstocks:a BioMax®15 Biopower System that uses rawand torrefied woodchips as feedstocks,and an integratedbiorefinery(IBR)that uses rice hulls and woodchips ***_(2.5)mass concentrations in syngas from theIBR downstream of the purification system were 12.8-13.7μg·m^(-3),which were significantly lower than themaximum level for catalyst protection(500μg·m^(-3))andwere 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than those inBioMax®15 syngas(2247-4835μg·m^(-3)).Ultrafine particlenumber concentration and PM_(2.5)chemical constituentswere also much lower in the IBR syngas than in theBioMax®*** dilution sampling system enabledreliable measurements over a wide range of concentrations:the use of high sensitivity instruments allowed measurementat very low concentrations(~1μg·m^(-3)),while theflexibility of dilution minimized sampling problems thatare commonly encountered due to high levels of tars in rawsyngas(~1 g·m^(-3)).

The aim of this study was to perform computational fluid dynamics (cFD) simulations on the airflows at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). In particular, the effects of hangar buildings and terrain were studied to explore the effects of turbulence on flying aircraft, especially during landing. The cFD simulation showed that significant differences in wind speeds may occur between the north and the south runways on the western part of the HKIA under typhoon conditions with a strong north to northwesterly wind. Simulation also showed that the hanger buildings between the two runways on the western side and the nearby terrain could be causing the observed difference in the wind speeds. The results also indicated that these obstacles could cause significant wind speed variations at the western end of the south runway. This may affect the operation of landing aircraft. The cFD results for a typical typhoon case were analyzed and found to match the wind data recorded by an aircraft landing that day.

Broad-host-range synthetic biology is an emerging frontier that aims to expand our current engineerable domain of microbial hosts for biodesign *** more novel species are brought to“model status,”synthetic biologists are discovering that identically engineered genetic circuits can exhibit different performances depending on the organism it operates within,an observation referred to as the“chassis effect.”It remains a major challenge to uncover which genome-encoded and biological determinants will underpin chassis effects that govern the performance of engineered genetic *** this study,we compared model and novel bacterial hosts to ask whether phylogenomic relatedness or similarity in host physiology is a better predictor of genetic circuit *** was accomplished using a comparative framework based on multivariate statistical approaches to systematically demonstrate the chassis effect and characterize the performance dynamics of a genetic inverter circuit operating within 6 *** results solidify the notion that genetic devices are strongly impacted by the host ***,we formally determined that hosts exhibiting more similar metrics of growth and molecular physiology also exhibit more similar performance of the genetic inverter,indicating that specific bacterial physiology underpins measurable chassis *** result of this study contributes to the field of broad-host-range synthetic biology by lending increased predictive power to the implementation of genetic devices in less-established microbial hosts.
