Low-Density Parity-Check （LDPC） codes are powerful error correcting codes adopted by recent communication standards. LDPC decoders are based on belief propagation algorithms, which make use of a Tanner graph and very intensive message-passing computation, and usually require hardware-based dedicated solutions. With the exponential increase of the computational power of commodity graphics processing units （GPUs）, new opportunities have arisen to develop general purpose processing on GPUs. This paper proposes the use of GPUs for implementing flexible and programmable LDPC decoders. A new stream-based approach is proposed, based on compact data structures to represent the Tanner graph. It is shown that such a challenging application for stream-based computing, because of irregular memory access patterns, memory bandwidth and recursive flow control constraints, can be efficiently implemented on GPUs. The proposal was experimentally evaluated by programming LDPC decoders on GPUs using the Caravela platform, a generic interface tool for managing the kernels＇ execution regardless of the GPU manufacturer and operating system. Moreover, to relatively assess the obtained results, we have also implemented LDPC decoders on general purpose processors with Streaming Single Instruction Multiple Data （SIMD） Extensions. Experimental results show that the solution proposed here efficiently decodes several codewords simultaneously, reducing the processing time by one order of magnitude.

In the recent few decades, discovery of the DAST mediated reaction system for organic reactions to form oxazolines has effected drastic and far-reaching changes in the scientific domain. This invention has engrossed the interest of chemists and is increasing our understanding of how a range of organic synthetic processes are enhanced.-its alluring tendency has been marked by numerous applications such as gasoline （petrol and diesel） and lube oil additives, pharmaceutical industries, surface-active agent, corrosion resistant coating, anti-foaming agents, textile chemicals, adhesives and binders, stabilizers for chlorinated hydrocarbons;thus justifying the rigorous research on the oxazoline compound. Today, extraordinary transformations to various natural products and biologically active molecules have been achieved where various oxazolines are useful as intermediates. Oxazoline intermediates entertain a great diversity of reaction patterns that can stand numerous functional groups. Additionally, oxazoline synthetic protocols using DAST are economically captivating procedures as most procedures have been used as surrogate for the traditionally tedious, toxic and sometimes unreliably low product-yielding. In recent progresses, demonstrations from various researchers make free from ambiguity the contributions of the versatility of modern oxazoline synthesis in the development of pharmaceutical libraries, and also in the polymer, material and petroleum industries. In our special case, methodologies used with other systems are mentioned in passing as a justification as to why oxazolines are considered to be species with special powers. Encouraged by the virtues of this, we have conveniently developed a method for the synthesis of highly functionalized2-oxazolines in a one pot component reaction of Ketoximes using DAST via Beckmann rearrangement. Ultrashort laser pulses are used to create surface structures on thin(25 μm) silicon(Si) wafers. Scanning the wafer with a galvanometric mirror system creates large homogeneously structured areas. The variety of structure shapes that can be generated with this method is exemplified by the analysis of shape, height and distance of structures created in the ambient media air and isopropanol. A study of the correlation between structure height and remaining wafer thickness is presented. The comparatively easy manufacturing technique and the structure variety that allows for custom-tailored targets show great potential for high repetition rate ion acceleration experiments.

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease characterized by a poorly-defined inflammatory response that does not encompass a massive immune cell infiltration yet contributes to cartilage degradation and loss of joint mobility, suggesting a chondrocyte intrinsic inflammatory response. Using primary chondrocytes from joints of osteoarthritic mice and patients, we first show that these cells express ample pro-inflammatory markers and RANKL in an NF-κB dependent manner. The inflammatory phenotype of chondrocytes was recapitulated by exposure of chondrocytes to IL-1β and bone particles, which were used to model bone matrix breakdown products revealed to be present in synovial fluid of OA patients, albeit their role was not defined. We further show that bone particles and IL-1β can promote senescent and apoptotic changes in primary chondrocytes due to oxidative stress from various cellular sources such as the mitochondria. Finally, we provide evidence that inflammation, oxidative stress and senescence converge upon IκB-ζ, the principal mediator downstream of NF-κB, which regulates expression of RANKL, inflammatory, catabolic,and SASP genes. Overall, this work highlights the capacity and mechanisms by which inflammatory cues, primarily joint degradation products, i.e., bone matrix particles in concert with IL-1β in the joint microenvironment, program chondrocytes into an “inflammatory phenotype” which inflects local tissue damage.

The increasing demand for energy has intensified recently, requiring alternative sources to fossil fuels, which have become economically and environmentally unfeasible. On the other hand, the increasing land occupation in recent centuries is a growing problem, demanding greater efficiency, particularly in the reuse of abandoned areas, which has become an alternative. An interesting alternative would be installing energy facilities like solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal, in these areas. The objective of this paper is to develop a classification methodology, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Theory (QT), to automatically carry out the classification of abandoned areas suitable for the settlement of these power plants. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) improved by the hybrid algorithm Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) together with the Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA) were used for the classification task. In terms of Mean Squared Error (MSE), the QPSO-LMA approach achieved a decrease of 19.6% in relation to the classical LMA training with random initial weights. Moreover, the model’s accuracy showed an increase of 7.3% for the QPSO-LMA over the LMA. To validate this new approach, it was also tested on six different datasets available in the UCI Machine Learning Repository and seven classical techniques established in the literature. For the problem of installing photovoltaic plants in abandoned areas, the knowledge acquired with the solar dataset can be extrapolated to other regions.
