The repeated slab approach has become a de facto standard to accurately describe surface properties of materials by density functional theory calculations with periodic boundary *** materials exhibiting spontaneous polarization,we show that the conventional scheme of passivation with pseudo hydrogen is unable to realize a charge-neutral *** presence of a net surface charge induces via Gauss’s law a macroscopic electric field through the slab and results in poor size convergence with respect to the thickness of the *** propose a modified passivation method that accounts for the effect of spontaneous polarization,describes the correct bulk limits and boosts convergence with respect to slab *** robustness,reliability,and superior convergence of energetics and electronic structure achieved by the proposed method are demonstrated using the example of polar ZnO surfaces.

Background and Aims:The impact of coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)on liver function remains to be fully *** study was designed to investigate such and determine the clinical significance in determining mortality ***:A retrospective study was conducted in patients with COVID-19 from March 2020 to July *** details were retrieved from electronic medical records to obtain clinical characteristics,medical history,laboratory tests,therapeutic intervention,and outcome ***:A total of 184 patients with COVID-19 were included(median age:45.5 years),comprised of 62.5%*** total,22(12.0%)patients had severe infection and 162(88.0%)had mild to moderate ***,95(51.6%)showed abnormal liver function test(LFT)and 17(9.2%)showed normal LFT at *** median age,hospital stay,and LFT were significantly higher in severe ***-severe infection(p<0.001).Out of 12 deaths,the majority were due to severe infection(n=11).Deaths were also due to acute respiratory distress syndrome(n=5),cardiac reasons(n=3),and sepsis with multiorgan failure(n=3).The median age,hospital stay and number of intensive care unit admissions were higher in patients having abnormal LFT compared to normal *** of elevated aspartate aminotransferase(42.8%and 40.4%),alanine transaminase(43.7%and 41.6%),and hypoalbuminemia(71.4%and72.7%)at admission and discharge were more common in severe *** mean survival was significantly lower in severe infection compared to those with non-severe disease(17.2 vs.52.3 days;p<0.001).Conclusions:Incidence of abnormal liver function was higher in patients with severe COVID-19 and was associated with prolonged hospital stay;mortality was associated with severity of *** ruling out the risk of liver injury,it is crucial to vigilantly monitor the liver function parameters in patients with COVID-19 admitted to hospital.

The potential utility of gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)synthesized via different methods for biomedical applications vary greatly due to inherent differences in their surface *** the present study,we investigated the functionalization of AuNPs synthesized by chemical reduction,plant extract,and bacteria-mediated methods with 22 L-amino *** produced by bacteria-mediated(B_AuNPs)and plant-mediated(P_AuNPs)methods showed good potential,as they were able to be functionalized with six(histidine,lysine,methionine,phenylalanine,tryptophan,and tyrosine)and four(cystine,tryptophan,tyrosine,and valine)amino acids,*** contrast,AuNPs produced by chemical reduction(C_AuNPs)were not found to be suitable for *** functionalization conditions were found to be amino acid concentration of 20-25 mM and neutral pH(7)for P_AuNPs,whereas B_AuNPs tolerated more variable *** electrophoretic mobility of P_AuNPs after functionalization indicated that these nanoparticles were less sensitive than B_AuNPs to the deviations from optimal conditions.A significant change in mobility was observed when B_AuNPs were functionalized with either methionine or ***,the results of this study suggest that the suitability of the three differently synthesized AuNPs with amino acids is in the following order:B_AuNPs>P_AuNPs>C_AuNPs.

Sustained inflammation from infiltrated immune cells plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis （UC）. Previously, we established the role of ribosomal protein L13a in the regulation of an inflammation-responsive post-transcriptional operon in myeloid cells. However, the role of this protein as a molecular cue to control the severity of colitis is not known. Here, we examined whether L13a-dependent translational control in macrophages could serve as an endogenous defense against colitis. The administration of dextran sodium sulfate induced experimental colitis in myeloid-specific L13a-knockout （KO） and control mice. Pathological scoring and injury to the colon mucosa evaluated the severity of colitis. The steady-state levels of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines were determined through ELISA and polyribosome profile analysis. Rapid weight loss, severe rectal bleeding, shortening of the colon, and significantly reduced survival rate were observed in the KO mice. Histopathological analysis of the colons of KO mice showed a severe disruption of epithelial crypts with immune cell infiltrates. Elevated levels of several inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and abrogation of their naturally imposed translational silencing were observed in the colons of the KO mice. Higher serum levels of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and the release of gut bacteria and endotoxins into the blood streams of KO mice were detected, suggesting the amplification of the inflammatory response to septicemia. Taken together, these results reveal an essential role for L13a in the endogenous protection against UC and demonstrate the potential for new therapeutic opportunities through the deliberate promotion of this mechanism.

Scientific information is vital to the conservation of cetaceans and the management of whale-watching *** southern coastal waters of Sri Lanka are near a narrow continental shelf and biologically abundant in cetacean *** the occurrence of cetaceans has been investigated in certain waters of Sri Lanka,few surveys have been conducted along the southern *** fill this gap,we conducted boat-based surveys from January to May 2017 to investigate the occurrence,diversity,and behavior of cetaceans in the waters off Mirissa,covering a survey area of 788.9 *** 55 survey days,we recorded a total of 242 cetacean sightings and identified at least 9 species(3 mysticetes and 6 odontocetes).The blue whale was the most common mysticete species(167 of 174 mysticete encounters),followed by the Omura’s whale(4 of 174)and Bryde’s whale(3 of 174).The spinner dolphin was the most common odontocete species(28 of 68 odontocete encounters),followed by the sperm whale(18 of 68),common bottlenose dolphin(13 of 68),short-finned pilot whale(5 of 68),melon-headed whale(2 of 68),and killer *** whales and sperm whales exhibited a clear preference for outer shelf and high slope areas,and blue whales were observed feeding along these *** present study provides near-baseline information on cetacean occurrence and diversity in whale-watching waters off southern Sri Lanka,and highlights the urgent need for proper management strategies for whale-watching activities.

Information Theoretic Distinguishers for Timing Attacks with Partial Profiles: Solving the Empty Bin Issue

Cloud computing is a concept that comprises a lot of underlying technologies such as virtualization[1], utility computing and system oriented architecture. Eucalyptus is a Java based cloud management tool that consists with four major components: Cloud Controller, Cluster Controller, Node Controller and Walrus. The main objective of this research is to introduce a low cost virtual lab environment for an institute by keeping a consistent copy of Virtual Machine （VM） image when the multiple users access the same VM image. Basically there are lots of approaches which have been taken to improve the effectiveness of managing virtual machine images in Eucalyptus based Cloud environment. Here mainly we have been used two approaches to enhance the current virtual image sharing mechanism, without damaging the flow of the Cloud environment. In our approach we implemented a locking mechanism for the cloud controller which acts as the main control unit of the Cloud environment to keep the consistency and then we integrate the version enabling mechanism for the Walrus which acts as the main storage controller of the cloud environment. For the version enabling mechanism we used virtual machine images with Btrfs file system which contains the copy on write feature to keep the multiple copies of same VM image when required.

In any side-channel attack, it is desirable to exploit all the available leakage data to compute the distinguisher’s values. The profiling phase is essential to obtain an accurate leakage model, yet it may not be exhaustive. As a result, information theoretic distinguishers may come up on previously unseen data, a phenomenon yielding empty bins. A strict application of the maximum likelihood method yields a distinguisher that is not even sound. Ignoring empty bins reestablishes soundness, but seriously limits its performance in terms of success rate. The purpose of this paper is to remedy this situation. In this research, we propose six different techniques to improve the performance of information theoretic distinguishers. We study them thoroughly by applying them to timing attacks, both with synthetic and real leakages. Namely, we compare them in terms of success rate, and show that their performance depends on the amount of profiling, and can be explained by a bias-variance analysis. The result of our work is that there exist use-cases, especially when measurements are noisy, where our novel information theoretic distinguishers (typically the soft-drop distinguisher) perform the best compared to known side-channel distinguishers, despite the empty bin situation.

Quantitative Real-Time PCR as a Novel Detection Method for Micro-RNAs Expressed by Cervical Cancer Tissue: A Review

The potential of microRNAs (miRNA) as biomarkers of Cervical Cancer (CC) is analyzed extensively by many researchers today. However, some studies have shown that miRNAs are expressed in cancers and may act as a better diagnostic strategy than the Pap smear or even assist it as a screening strategy. MicroRNA expression has been shown to differ in precancerous lesions as well as in cervical cancer tumours from that of normal tissue. With the use of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), microRNAs can be detected in many sample types ranging from biopsy samples to blood (serum and plasma). Early detection of the disease is possible due to the aberrant expression of miRNAs in precancerous stages as well as advanced stages of the disease;this proves that they have the potential to be an ideal novel biomarker for CC. This review discusses studies using qRT-PCR to detect the expression of miRNAs within the years 2008-2019 and focuses on giving an insight into the types of samples and kits that have been used. Publications which have used qRT-PCR as a primary or secondary detection method were selected via Google Scholar Search and PubMed. Studies were shown to have used a variety of kits and reagents, but all have applied the main principle of qRT-PCR. Quantitative Real-Time PCR is shown to be a versatile and accurate detection technique for miRNAs of CC.
