Distribution of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances in blood,serum,and urine of patients with liver cancer and associations with liver function biomarkers

Studies have shown that per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs)may be hepatotoxic in animals or humans.However,data on clinical epidemiology are very limited.In this study,21PFASs were determined in patients with liver diseases,with the highest median concentrations detected in the serum sample(26.7 ng/mL),followed by blood(10.7 ng/mL)and urine(5.02 ng/mL).Higher total PFAS concentrations were found in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients compared to non-HCC patients,with significant discrepancies in serum and blood samples.Besides,significant correlations were also found among PFAS concentrations and age,gender,body mass index(BMI),and liver function biomarkers levels.For example,PFAS concentrations are significantly higher in males than in females;Several serum PFASs concentrations increase with age and BMI,while the serum perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS)concentrations are negatively correlated with age.In addition,multiple regression models adjusted for age,gender and BMI found that increased serum perfluorobutane sulfonic acid(PFBS),perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid(PFHpS)and perfluorohexylphosphonic acid(PFHxPA)conentrations are correlated with elevated alkaline phosphatase(ALP),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)(p<0.05).Our results provide epidemiological support for the future study on the potential clinical hepatotoxicity of PFAS.

Cauchy matrix approach to three non-isospectral nonlinear Schrödinger equations

This paper aims to develop a direct approach,namely,the Cauchy matrix approach,to non-isospectral integrable systems.In the Cauchy matrix approach,the Sylvester equation plays a central role,which defines a dressed Cauchy matrix to provideτfunctions for the investigated equations.In this paper,using the Cauchy matrix approach,we derive three non-isospectral nonlinear Schrödinger equations and their explicit solutions.These equations are generically related to the time-dependent spectral parameter in the Zakharov–Shabat–Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur spectral problem.Their solutions are obtained from the solutions of unreduced non-isospectral nonlinear Schrödinger equations through complex reduction.These solutions are analyzed and illustrated to show the non-isospectral effects in dynamics of solitons.

Nonlinear Extrapolation Estimates of π

The classical Archimedean approximation of π uses the semiperimeter or area of regular polygons inscribed in or circumscribed about a unit circle in R~2 and it is well-known that by using linear combinations of these basic estimates,modern extrapolation techniques can greatly speed up the approximation process.Similarly,when n vertices are randomly selected on the circle,the semiperimeter and area of the corresponding random inscribed and circumscribing polygons are known to converge to π almost surely as n→∞,and by further applying extrapolation processes,faster convergence rates can also be achieved through similar linear combinations of the semiperimeter and area of these random polygons.In this paper,we further develop nonlinear extrapolation methods for approximating π through certain nonlinear functions of the semiperimeter and area of such polygons.We focus on two types of extrapolation estimates of the forms χ_n=S_n~αA_n~β and Y_n(p)=(αS_n~p+βA_n~p)~(1/p) where α+β=1,p≠0,and Sn and An respectively represents the semiperimeter and area of a random n-gon inscribed in the unit circle in R~2,and Xn may be viewed as the limit of Y_n(p) when p→0.By deriving probabilistic asymptotic expansions with carefully controlled error estimates for Xn and Y_n(p),we show that the choice α=4/3,β=-1/3 minimizes the approximation error in both cases,and their distributions are also asymptotically normal.

Atomic arrays provide an important quantum optical platform with photon-mediated dipole–dipole interactions that can be engineered to realize key applications in quantum information processing.A major obstacle for such applications is the fast decay of the excited states.By controlling two-band Bloch oscillations of single excitation in an atomic array under an external magnetic field,here we show that exotic subradiance can be realized and maintained with orders of magnitude longer than the spontaneous decay time in atomic arrays with the finite size.The key finding is to show a way for preventing the wavepacket of excited states scattering into the dissipative zone inside the free space light cone,which therefore leads to the excitation staying at a subradiant state for an extremely long decay time.We show that such operation can be achieved by introducing a spatially linear potential from the external magnetic field in the atomic arrays and then manipulating interconnected two-band Bloch oscillations along opposite directions.Our results also point out the possibility of controllable switching between superradiant and subradiant states,which leads to potential applications in quantum storage.

The remarkable functionality of biological systems in detecting and adapting to various environmental conditions has inspired the design of the latest electronics and robots with advanced features.This review focuses on intelligent bio-inspired strategies for developing soft bioelectronics and robotics that can accommodate nanocomposite adhesives and integrate them into biological surfaces.The underlying principles of the material and structural design of nanocomposite adhesives were investigated for practical applications with excellent functionalities,such as soft skin-attachable health care sensors,highly stretchable adhesive electrodes,switchable adhesion,and untethered soft robotics.In addition,we have discussed recent progress in the development of effective fabrication methods for micro/nanostructures for integration into devices,presenting the current challenges and prospects.

despite the tremendous advancement in the robustness and functionality of DNA-based computing systems throughout the past decade[1-4],reconfiguration of typical DNA computing circuits for diverse tasks is still hindered by the requirement of a priori knowledge about underlying circuit physics.In addition,the type of algorithms that can be implemented by a DNA integrated circuit(DIC)was limited to a small number,therefore limiting the computing power of DIC[1-4].

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuroprotection by oligopeptides from snake venoms

Venom snake-derived peptides have multiple biochemical,pharmacological,and toxicological proﬁles,allowing for the discovery of new medicinal products and therapeutic applications.This review speciﬁcally examines the fundamental elements of neuroprotection offered by different oligopeptides derived from snake venom.It also includes a brief evaluation of short peptides that are being considered as potential therapeutic agents.Proline-rich peptides and tryptophyllin family peptides isolated from the crude venom of Viperidae family snakes,speciﬁcally Bothrops atrox,Bothrops jararaca,and Bothrops moojeni,have been shown to have pro-survival properties,the ability to reduce oxidative stress,and the ability to promote cell viability and mitochondrial functions.Three signiﬁcant mechanisms are related to the neuroprotection mediated by snake venom oligopeptides:(1)Activation of the L-arginine metabolite pathway,such as polyamines from ornithine metabolism,which reduces N-methyl-D-aspartate(NMda)-type glutamate receptor activity;(2)Enhancement of cell viability by activating the nerve growth factor-signaling pathway;and(3)Activation of the Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor subtype M1(mAChR-M1).These small peptides show promise as neuroprotective agents against a variety of neurodegenerative disorders.

A Single-Fluorophore Multicolor Molecular Sensor That Visually Identifies Organic Anions Including Phosphates

Developing fluorescent sensors for small-molecule phosphates offers opportunities in optically detecting biorelevant reactions and events.However,it remains elusive how to identify phosphates from other anions,such as carboxylates and sulfates,because current synthetic phosphate receptors lack selectivity.Here we report the construction of a multicolor fluorescent sensor that can identify phosphates from other analogous anions.The key design principle is to take advantage of the highly sensitive conformation-dependent emissive wavelength of diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine fluorophores to sense the minor structural differences between phosphates and other anions,for example,sulfates and carboxylates.The effect of structural factors such as spacer length and urea versus thiourea has been investigated by comparing the optical properties and binding affinities with the phosphate receptors.This strategy provides a simple and robust fluorescent sensing solution to optically analyze small-molecule phosphates with antiinterference performance.
