Electronic waste(e-waste)and diabetes are global challenges to modern ***,solving these two challenges together has been challenging until ***,we propose a laser-induced transfer method to fabricate portable glucose sensors by recycling copper from *** bring up a laser-induced full-automatic fabrication method for synthesizing continuous heterogeneous cu_(x)O(h-cu_(x)O)nano-skeletons electrode for glucose sensing,offering rapid(clean,air-compatible,and continuous fabrication,applicable to a wide range of cu-containing *** this approach,h-cu_(x)O nanoskeletons,with an inner core predominantly composed of cu_(2)O with lower oxygen content,juxtaposed with an outer layer rich in amorphous cu_(x)O(a-cu_(x)O)with higher oxygen content,are derived from discarded printed circuit *** employed in glucose detection,the h-cu_(x)O nano-skeletons undergo a structural evolution process,transitioning into rigid cu_(2)O@cuO nano-skeletons prompted by electrochemical *** transformation yields exceptional glucose-sensing performance(sensitivity:9.893 mA mM^(-1) cm^(-2);detection limit:0.34μM),outperforming most previously reported glucose *** functional theory analysis elucidates that the heterogeneous structure facilitates gluconolactone *** glucose detection device has also been downsized to optimize its scalability and portability for convenient integration into people’s everyday lives.

Mechanisms underlying detection of seed dormancy by a scatter-hoarding rodent

The mechanism underlying detection of seed dormancy by scatter-hoarding rodents is unclear,although previous work suggests that the pericarp plays an important role in signaling dormancy *** gray squirrels(Sciurus carolinensis)consume early germinating seeds as they are more likely to perish immediately,whereas dormant seeds tend to be *** examine the mechanisms underlying dormancy detection,we characterized physical and chemical differences between germinating and dormant pericarps of northern red oak(Quercus rubra),American chestnut(castanea dentata)and the Bc3 hybrid of chinese chestnut and American chestnut(castanea mollissima×***)using scanning electron microscopy and gas chromatography-mass spec*** found that,as seeds break dormancy,the wax layer on the pericarp degrades and is accompanied by the escape of lower molecular weight kernel compounds or lipid metabolism *** field experiments showed that squirrels were 4-8 times more likely to consume seeds that were altered to remove pericarp wax coating or that were sprayed with seed *** argue that dormancy detection by scatter-hoarding rodents is a complex process involving physical cues such as loss of pericarp wax and chemical cues such as emission of olfactory cues.

Do statins reduce hepatitis c RNA titers during routine clinical use?

AIM: To compare hepatitis c virus (HcV) titers in patients with chronic hepatitis c with and without exposure to 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins).METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for 6463 patients with documented HcV infection at a single center between March 2004 and September 2006. Patients with confi rmed viremia and meeting inclusion criteria were assigned to one of three groups: Group A (n = 50), dyslipidemic patients with statin usage during HcV RNA polymerase chain reaction (PcR) determination; Group B (n = 49), dyslipidemic patients with prior or future statin usage but not at the time of HcV RNA PcR determination; and Group c (n = 102), patients without statin usage during the study period. The primary analysis explored the effect of statin therapy on HcV viremia. Secondary analyses assessed class effect, dose response, and effect of other lipid-lowering therapies on HcV viral ***: Median HcV RNA titers did not signif icantly differ among the three groups (Group A: 4 550 000 IU/mL, Group B: 2 850 000 IU/mL, Group c: 3 055 000 IU/mL).For those subjects with longitudinal assessment of HcV viremia prior to and while on statins, there were no signif icant differences between pre- and post-HcV viral titers. Additionally, no differences in HcV titers were observed at any dose level of the most prescribed statin, simvastatin. However, hypertriglyceridemia independently correlated with HcV titers, and niacin exposure was associated with signif icantly lower viral titers (P cONcLUSION: There was no apparent effect of statins on HcV viral replication in this analysis. Further investigation is warranted to explore the possible antiviral properties of triglyceride-lowering agents and their potential role as adjuncts to standard HcV therapy.

Ovarian cancer(Oc)is one of the most lethal malignancies of the female reproduc-tive *** patients are usually diagnosed at advanced stages due to the lack of early *** standard treatment for Oc includes a combination of debulking surgery and platinum-taxane chemotherapy,while several targeted therapies have recently been approved for maintenance *** vast majority of Oc patients relapse with chemoresistant tu-mors after an initial ***,there is an unmet clinical need to develop new therapeu-tic agents to overcome the chemoresistance of *** anti-parasite agent niclosamide(NA)has been repurposed as an anti-cancer agent and exerts potent anti-cancer activities in human cancers including ***,we investigated whether NA could be repurposed as a therapeutic agent to overcome cisplatin-resistant(cR)in human Oc *** this end,we first established two cR lines SKOV3cR and OVcAR8cR that exhibit the essential biological characteristics of cisplatin resistance in human *** showed that NA inhibited cell proliferation,sup-pressed cell migration,and induced cell apoptosis in both cR lines at a low micromole ***,NA inhibited multiple cancer-related pathways including AP1,ELK/SRF,HIF1,and TcF/LEF,in SKOV3cR and OVcAR8cR *** was further shown to effectively inhibit xenograft tumor growth of SKOV3cR ***,our findings strongly suggest that NA may be repurposed as an efficacious agent to combat cisplatin resistance in chemoresistant hu-man Oc,and further clinical trials are highly warranted.

Breast cancer is the second-most prevalent cancer in the United States,with 234,190 new cases projected to be diagnosed in *** initial diagnosis is commonly made early in its disease course due to the use of routine screening mammography.1 combined with advances in adjuvant chemotherapy,this has led to promising overall outcomes,including a 5-year survival rate of 89.4%and a 10%e12%rate of locoregional recurrence at 20 years for stage I/II disease.1-3 By comparison,prognosis remains poor for patients with metastatic disease at diagnosis or for those who present after initial cure of disease with distant recurrence.4 Among cases of distant recurrence,skeletal recurrence occurs frequently and can be accompanied by hypercalcemia,pain,and functional compromise often requiring a protracted course of palliative therapy.

Hydrocephalus after subarachnoid hemorrhage:A metaanalytic comparison of aneurysm treatments

AIM： To compare two treatments for ruptured cerebral aneurysm with reference to the relative risk of develop-ing ***： We reviewed the English language litera-ture on the risk of developing hydrocephalus after an-eurysm treatment. Data were divided by type of study （randomized controlled trial, cohort trial, nonrandomized comparison, prospectively- and retrospectively-collected observational study）. They were also divided by type of aneurysm treatment （microvascular - clipping, or endo-vascular - coiling）. Additional predictive variables collected for each publication were average age, gender distribu-tion, measures of hemorrhage volume and subarachnoid hemorrhage severity, aneurysm locations, time to treat-ment, duration of follow-up and date of publication. Weemployed meta-analysis to calculate pooled risk ratios of developing hydrocephalus in cases receiving aneurysm clipping vs those receiving coiling. Meta-regression was used to correct pooled results for ***： Because indications for the two treatments are different, there is little clinical equipoise for treat-ing most cases. The single randomized, controlled trial dealt with a small subset of ruptured aneurysms. Nei-ther this nor pooled values from other studies which compared the two treatments had the power to dem-onstrate signifcant differences between the two treat-ments. Nor was there an apparent difference when observational data were meta-analytically pooled. How-ever, when meta-regression was used to correct for predictive variables known to differ between the two treatment groups, a highly-significant difference ap-peared. coiling is used more commonly in older, sicker patients with aneurysms in certain locations. These cases are more likely to develop hydrocephalus. When corrected for these covariates, the risk of hydrocepha-lus was found to be significantly lower in coiled vsclipped cases （P = 0.014）.cONcLUSION： Pooled observational data were nec-essary to demonstra
