Effect of Kinesio Taping on Hand Function in Hemiparetic Patients

Introduction: Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the second most frequent cause of death in the world. Nevertheless, most victims do survive and need treatment, and hand function is one that has to be dealt with in the rehabilitation process. Kinesio®?Taping (KT) is a bandaging method that can be applied along the muscle fibers to provide stimulation. Studies have shown its efficacy in providing afferent stimuli to weakened muscles, thus eliciting contraction with greater recruiting of motor units and inducing neuroplasticity. Benefits to the paresthesia hand have not been reported. Objective: Investigate the effects of KT on hand function in hemiparetic patients. Material and Methods: An evaluator-blinded, randomized clinical trial involving stroke victims was carried out in a physical therapy outpatient clinic. One group underwent KT intervention and the other was a control group. The Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and the Box and Block Test (BBT) were used as assessment tools. A data entry form was used in the Epi-info 7 software and descriptive statistics was thus calculated. The software BioStat 5.0 was employed when doing statistical tests. Associations were regarded as statistically significant when p 0.05. Results: Eight individuals were randomly assigned to two groups. All those who had received treatment with KT had spasticity improved by one point, but there was no significant improvement in BBT. Conclusion: KT was effective when it came to improving spasticity and it may be an option in rehab, but it had no effect on gross manual dexterity. Nevertheless, it can be of help as part of a functional training program.

Prevalence of sarcopenia using different methods in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a clinical condition associated with several liver diseases and it includes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)in its broad spectrum as steatosis,steatohepatitis and ***,the criteria to define sarcopenia are diverse,and even those established in consensus have been discussed regarding their performance in making an accurate *** To evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia,using different methods,in patients with NAFLD,and its association with clinical-anthropometric *** This was an observational study of outpatients with *** was defined by the European Working Group Consensus on Sarcopenia in Older People of 2010(EWGSOP1)and 2018(EWGSOP2).The skeletal muscle index was used to estimate muscle mass,handgrip strength was assessed using the dynamometer and physical performance by walking a distance of four meters at usual walking *** non-invasive fibrosis scores,fibrosis-4(FIB-4)index and Aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index(APRI),were used to assess the absence and presence of *** Fifty-seven individuals with NAFLD were evaluated,the mean age(SD)was 52.7(11.3)years and 75.4%were *** assessed by FIB-4 and APRI was observed in 3.7%and 16.6%of patients with NAFLD,*** diagnosis of sarcopenia was identified only by EWGSOP1 in 3.5%of NAFLD patients,and the prevalence of probable/pre-sarcopenia was higher using the EWGSOP2 consensus at 26.3%,when compared to 1.8%with *** defined by EWGSOP1,was associated with grade I steatosis,but without overweight(P0.05).EWGSOP2 showed a greater number of patients with probable sarcopenia,and who were overweight(12(80.0%)),with a higher degree of steatosis[11(73.3%)and presence of fibrosis(1(6.7%),FIB-4 and 3(20.0%),APRI]compared to EWGSOP1[1(100%),0(0.0%),0(0.0%),FIB-4 and 0(0.0%),APRI,respectively].CONCLUSION The presen

Impact of infection in hospitalized cirrhotic patients in a university hospital

Background: Infection increases the morbidity and mortality in liver cirrhosis patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of infection related to survival and risk factors for death in adult patients with liver cirrhosis in a university hospital. Methods: In a retrospective cohort study of Brazilian hospitalized cirrhotic patients, medical records data were analysed, and all patients who have had one or more confirmed bacterial infection during admission were se-ected for the study. Also, some data as biochemical investigation, Child score, MELD estimation, and evolution and death event were included. Statistical analysis: chi-square, Fisher and Mann-Whitney tests were used. Uni and multivariate analysis were performed, according to Cox regression model. The significant statistical level was p 2.5 mg/dl had increased the risk of death of 4.1, 3.2 and 3.2, respectively. Conclusion: Bacterial infections in hospitalized cirrhotic patients deserve special care, mainly spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and also patients whose hiponatremia, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, high levels of cre-atinine and MELD high score are found.

Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Polymorphism and Periodontal Disease

The endothelial isoform of nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is responsible for the physiological production of NO in endo-thelial cells and platelets. There is evidence that the G894T polymorphism of the eNOS gene is associated with this enzyme's basal activity and NO production, which could contribute to the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases (PD). Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the role of G894T polymorphism in the eNOS gene as a predisposing factor to periodontal disease. In this study we investigated the association of this polymorphism with PD in an admix-ture population (N = 119) separated into three groups: Healthy control, Moderate and Severe PD, without statistical differences among them for risk factors for PD, such as age, gender and smoking status. We observed that the GG ge-notype was associated with the progression of PD as indicated by an increase in frequency of approximately 18% in the Moderate and 26% in the Severe groups compared to the Healthy control group (p = 0.0302). This finding indicates that patients carrying the GG genotype have a greater chance of developing PD compared with those carrying the T allele, and it reinforces the notion that genetic factors contribute to the development and aggravation of PD.
