This study sets up two new merit functions,which are minimized for the detection of real eigenvalue and complex eigenvalue to address nonlinear eigenvalue *** each eigen-parameter the vector variable is solved from a nonhomogeneous linear system obtained by reducing the number of eigen-equation one less,where one of the nonzero components of the eigenvector is normalized to the unit and moves the column containing that component to the right-hand side as a nonzero input vector.1D and 2D golden section search algorithms are employed to minimize the merit functions to locate real and complex ***,the real and complex eigenvectors can be computed very accurately.A simpler approach to the nonlinear eigenvalue problems is proposed,which implements a normalization condition for the uniqueness of the eigenvector into the eigenequation *** real eigenvalues can be computed by the fictitious time integration method(FTIM),which saves computational costs compared to the one-dimensional golden section search algorithm(1D GSSA).The simpler method is also combined with the Newton iterationmethod,which is convergent very *** the proposed methods are easily programmed to compute the eigenvalue and eigenvector with high accuracy and efficiency.

AIM To assessed the effect of liver cirrhosis(LC) on the poorly understood long-term mortality risk after firstever mechanical ventilation(1-MV) for acute respiratory *** All patients in Taiwan given a 1-MV between 1997 and 2013 were identified in Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. Each patient with LC was individually matched, using a propensity-score method, to two patients without LC. The primary outcome was death after a *** A total of 16653 patients were enrolled: 5551 LC-positive (LC^([Pos])) patients, including 1732 with cryptogenic LCs and 11102 LC-negative(LC^([Pos])) controls. LC^([Pos]) patients had more organ failures and were more likely to be admitted to medical department than were LC^([Pos]) controls. LC^([Pos]) patients had a significantly lower survival rate(AHR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.32-1.44). Moreover, the mortality risk was significantly higher for patients with non-cryptogenic LC than for patients with cryptogenic LC(AHR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.32-1.54) and patients without LC(AHR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.32-1.54). However, there was no significant difference between patients with cryptogenic and without LC(HR = 1.05, 95%CI: 0.98-1.12).CONCLUSION LC, especially non-cryptogenic LC, significantly increases the risk of death after a 1-MV.

AIM: Five representative waterborne pathogens were used to illustrate the relationship between chitosan’s antibac- terial activity and the surface characteristics of the bacterial cell wall. METHODS: Chitosan was prepared with averaged 75 % or 95 % deacetylated degree to examine its antibacterial activity against waterborne pathogens. Fresh microbial inoculants for the antibacterial assessment were prepared on nutrient agar at 37oC for 24 h. The evaluation items of antibacterial mechanism included hydrophilicity and negative charge analysis of cell surface, and adsorptive characteristics of chitosan to bacterial cell. All the experiments were applied in triplicate tests at least. RESULTS: Although cell wall hydrophilicity was similar among Gram-negative bacteria, the distribution of negative charge on their cell surfaces was quite different. More negatively charged cell surfaces had a greater interaction with chitosan, a phenomenon further confirmed by transmission electron micrography (TEM). CONCLUSION: Results showed the hydrophilicity in Gram-negative bacteria was much higher than in Gram-positive ones. The correlation coefficient 0.988 between the amount of absorbed chitosan and its inhibition efficiency indicated a close relationship.

Food web and gene regulatory networks(GRNs) are large biological networks, both of which can be analyzed using the May–Wigner theory. According to the theory, networks as large as mammalian GRNs would require dedicated gene products for stabilization. We propose that micro RNAs(mi RNAs) are those products. More than 30% of genes are repressed by mi RNAs, but most repressions are too weak to have a phenotypic consequence. The theory shows that(i) weak repressions cumulatively enhance the stability of GRNs, and(ii) broad and weak repressions confer greater stability than a few strong ones. Hence, the diffuse actions of mi RNAs in mammalian cells appear to function mainly in stabilizing GRNs. The postulated link between m RNA repression and GRN stability can be seen in a different light in yeast, which do not have mi RNAs. Yeast cells rely on non-specific RNA nucleases to strongly degrade m RNAs for GRN stability. The strategy is suited to GRNs of small and rapidly dividing yeast cells, but not the larger mammalian cells. In conclusion, the May–Wigner theory, supplanting the analysis of small motifs, provides a mathematical solution to GRN stability, thus linking mi RNAs explicitly to ’developmental canalization’.

Indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO) is a rate-limiting enzyme for the tryptophan catabolism. In human and murine cells, IDO inhibits antigen-specific T cell proliferation in vitro and suppresses T cell responses to fetal alloantigens during murine pregnancy. In mice, IDO expression is an inducible feature of specific subsets of dendritic cells (DCs), and is important for T cell regulatory properties. However, the effect of IDO and tryptophan deprivation on DC func- tions remains unknown. We report here that when tryptophan utilization was prevented by a pharmacological inhibitor of IDO, 1-methyl tryptophan (1MT), DC activation induced by pathogenic stimulus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or inflam- matory cytokine TNF-α was inhibited both phenotypically and functionally. Such an effect was less remarkable when DC was stimulated by a physiological stimulus, CD40 ligand. Tryptophan deprivation during DC activation also regu- lated the expression of CCR5 and CXCR4, as well as DC responsiveness to chemokines. These results suggest that tryptophan usage in the microenvironment is essential for DC maturation, and may also play a role in the regulation of DC migratory behaviors.

Localized malignant pleural mesothelioma (LMPM) is a rare occurrence, and gastrointestinal intra-luminal metastases have not previously been reported. Herein, we report a patient with LMPM who presented with a local recurrence 10 mo after initial en bloc surgical resection. Abdominal computed tomography was performed for intractable, vague abdominal pain with episodic vomiting, which showed a "target sign" over the left lower quadrant. Laparotomy revealed several intra-luminal metastatic tumors in the small intestine and colon and a segmental resection of metastatic lesions was performed. Unfortunately, the patient died of sepsis despite successful surgical intervention. Though local recurrence is more frequent in LMPM, the possibility of distant metastasis should not be ignored in patients with non-specifi c abdominal pain.
