Accuracy of the AAST organ injury scale for CT evaluation of traumatic liver and spleen injuries

Objective： Detection of abdominal in- jury is a very important component in trauma management, so a precise assessment of liver and spleen injuries includ- ing their severity degree is necessary. There is a good case to believe that in emergency situations the radiologists＇ performance may profit from a systematic approach using established scoring systems. Score systems as the organ injury scale （OIS） drawn up by the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma are a valuable guidance for objec- tive trauma assessment. Aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively whether a structured approach using the OIS may help improve trauma assessment. Methods： Fifty-three patients, 38 male and 15 female who underwent CT and laparotomy after abdominal trauma were included in this study. The laparotomy was performed by experienced surgeons with a minimum experience of 6 years. While the original CT reports were written by differ- ent radiologists with a minimum experience of 3 years, and then a radiologist with experience of 4 years reviewed the same original CT pictures, resulting in the structured report. Both the original and structured CT results on liver and spleen injuries were transferred into OIS grades. Finally, the initial and structured CT results were compared with theintraoperative findings gathered from the surgery report. Results： Regarding the original CT report we found a mean divergence of 0.68±0.8 （r=-0.45） to the OIS finding in the surgery report for liver injuries （0.69±1.17 for spleen injuries; r=-0.69）. In comparison with the structured approach, where we detected a divergence of 0.8±0.68; r=-0.63 （0.47±0.77 for spleen injuries; r=0.91）, there was no significant difference. However we detected a lower rate of over-diag- nosis in structured approaches. Conclusion： Our study shows that a structured ap- proach to triage abdominal trauma using an imaging check- list does not lead to a significantly higher detection rate, but a nonsignificant trend

The Disintegration of a Floating Ferrofluid Layer into an Ordered Drop System in a Vertical Magnetic Field

Machine learning based state-of-charge prediction of electrochemical green hydrogen production:Zink-Zwischenschritt-Elektrolyseur(ZZE)

The intermittency of renewable energy is a key limiting factor for the successful decarbonization of both energy producing and consuming sectors. Green hydrogen has the potential to act as the central energy vector connecting hard-to-abate sectors to renewable power. However, combining energy storage and conversion for a holistic electrolyzer system remains challenging. Here, we show the innovative Zink-Zwischenschritt Elektrolyseur (ZZE), or Zinc Intermediate step Electrolyzer in English, that temporarily decouples the water splitting reaction and uses zinc to store electrical energy in chemical form. To perform optimal operation of a ZZE system, machine learning models were applied to predict the state of charge of a lab scale ZZE system. Using various models, we were able to determine the effectiveness of the prediction and contrast it to state of charge predictions of other energy storage systems. We show that a bi-directional long short-term memory neural network approach has the lowest error within the testing environment. This work serves to perform further ZZE development as well as state of charge prediction for other novel energy storage technologies.

Expedition to the blockchain application potential for higher education institutions

In the education sector,blockchain is currently at the end of the peak of inflated expectations in Gartner’s Hype ***,it is crucial to understand whether this technology meets the expectations of Higher Education Institutions(HEIs).We go on an expedition to identify blockchain application scenarios and its potential for HEI administration-the universities are digitalized to just 23.3%.Current information systems research addresses classifications of blockchain-based projects(application level)rather than their technical realization(protocol level).Thus,when evaluating blockchain application scenarios in HEI administration,we intensively consider the technical side of blockchain-based *** perform a threestep approach:(1)systematic literature review,(2)qualitative exploratory semi-structured interviews to sup-plement information on market-ready solutions,and(3)an evaluation of the potential of the blockchain-based projects identified,based on HEI administration *** find that the leading blockchain application scenarios are credential verification and *** the protocol level,we obtain equivocal results regarding the technical realization of projects,e.g.,their underlying blockchain types and storage *** the application level,when discussing the potential of different projects,we find that most of them address adaptability,complexity decomposition,and cost reduction requirements between HEIs;interest diversity and stakeholder collaboration between HEIs and business actors;privacy and trust between HEIs and students.

Sol-gel borate bioactive glasses(BGs)are promising ion-releasing biomaterials for wound healing ***,we report the synthesis of a series of binary B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BGs(CaO ranging from 50 to 90mol%)using a sol-gel-based *** influence of CaO content in B_(2)O_(3)-CaO borate BG on morphology,structure and ion release behavior was investigated in *** dissolution(ion release)and crystallization could be observed in borate BGs when CaO content increased,while the morphology was not significantly altered by increasing CaO *** results evidenced that the ion release behavior of borate BGs could be tailored by tuning the B_(2)O_(3)/CaO molar *** also evaluated the in vitro cytotoxicity,hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities of borate *** was validated for all borate ***,borate BGs exhibited composition-dependent hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic ***,higher contents of Ca in borate BGs facilitated hemostatic activity,while higher contents of B_(2)O_(3) were beneficial for pro-angiogenic *** synthesized sol-gel-derived borate BGs are promising materials for developing advanced wound healing dressings,given their fast ion release behavior and favorable hemostatic,antibacterial and angiogenic activities.

Effects of early postnatal gastric and colonic microbiota transplantation on piglet gut health

Background Diarrhea is a major cause of reduced growth and mortality in piglets during the suckling and weaning periods and poses a major threat to the global pig *** and gut dysbiosis may in part be prevented via improved early postnatal microbial colonization of the *** secure better postnatal gut colonization,we hypothesized that transplantation of colonic or gastric content from healthy donors to newborn recipients would prevent diarrhea in the recipients in the post-weaning *** objective was to examine the impact of transplanting colonic or gastric content on health and growth parameters and paraclinical parameters in recipient single-housed piglets exposed to a weaning transition and challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli(ETEC).Methods Seventy-two 1-day-old piglets were randomized to four groups:colonic microbiota transplantation(CMT,n=18),colonic content filtrate transplantation(CcFT,n=18),gastric microbiota transplantation(GMT,n=18),or saline(CON,n=18).Inoculations were given on d 2 and 3 of life,and all piglets were milk-fed until weaning(d 20)and shortly after challenged with ETEC(d 24).We assessed growth,diarrhea prevalence,ETEC concentration,organ weight,blood parameters,small intestinal morphology and histology,gut mucosal function,and microbiota composition and *** Episodes of diarrhea were seen in all groups during both the milk-and the solid-feeding phase,possibly due to stress associated with single ***,CcFT showed lower diarrhea prevalence on d 27,28,and 29 compared to CON(all P<0.05).CcFT also showed a lower ETEC prevalence on d 27(P<0.05).CMT showed a higher alpha diversity and a difference in beta diversity compared to CON(P<0.05).Growth and other paraclinical endpoints were similar across *** In conclusion,only CcFT reduced ETEC-related post-weaning ***,the protective effect was marginal,suggesting that higher doses,more effective modalities of administration
