Ecology　of　the　marine　cladoceran　Penilia　avirostris　Dana　in　Tolo　Harbour，Hong　Kong

Seasonal abundance of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris was studied in the Tolo Harbour,Hong Kong,from November 1987 to December *** occurred in plankton throughout the year,but no clear seasonal pattern could be identified. In general,densities were the highest in the Tolo Channel and decreased progressively towards the inner parts of the Tolo *** showed marked seasonal variations in body size and brood size. Body length of P. avirostris ranged from 0.3 to 1.0mm. Average body length was greatest on March 1988 and January 1989, and the smallest in May 1988, although no clear seasonal trends could be detected. Brood size of P. avirostris ranged from 1 to 13 over the study period with a mean of 5.6.A significant positive relationship was found between body length and brood size. Diel vertical migration and diel feeding pattern of P. avirostris was followed over a 24 h period from July 31 to August 1, 1991 at a station near the southern edge of the dam of the Plover Cove Reservoir. *** Performed typical nocturnal vertical migration. Although animals were seldom found below 10 m during either day or night,a greater fraction of the population was found in the upper 1 to 3 m at night than during the day.A diel cycle in gut pigment content was observed in ***. Gut pigment content was low during the day and increased sharply during the first 2 h after *** pigment content at 21:00 and 03:00 was about 2 times higher than average daytime *** a concentration was the highest near the surface and de creased towards the bottom, but water collected at 16 m still contained 1.79 ng/cm3 Chl.a. Because P. avirostris were usually found within the upper 10 m,we believe that the observed diel change in gut pigment content was like ly the result of a real diel feeding rhythm, and was probably not the result of individual animals moving in and out of the food-rich layer.

To unlock the full potential of PSCs,machine learning(ML)was implemented in this research to predict the optimal combination of mesoporous-titanium dioxide(mp-TiO_(2))and weight percentage(wt%)of phenyl-C_(61)-butyric acid methyl ester(PCBM),along with the current density(J_(sc)),open-circuit voltage(V_(oc)),fill factor(ff),and energy conversion efficiency(ECE).Then,the combination that yielded the highest predicted ECE was selected as a reference to fabricate PCBM-PSCs with nanopatterned TiO_(2)***,the PCBM-PSCs with nanopatterned TiO_(2)layers were fabricated and characterized to further understand the effects of nanopatterning depth and wt%of PCBM on ***,the highest ECE of 17.338%is achieved at 127 nm nanopatterning depth and 0.10 wt%of PCBM,where the J_(sc),V_(oc),and ff are 22.877 mA cm^(-2),0.963 V,and 0.787,*** measured J_(sc),V_(oc),ff,and ECE values show consistencies with the ML ***,these findings not only revealed the potential of ML to be used as a preliminary investigation to navigate the research of PSCs but also highlighted that nanopatterning depth has a significant impact on J_(sc),and the incorporation of PCBM on perovskite layer influenced the V_(oc)and ff,which further boosted the performance of PSCs.

Origin of magnetization-induced anisotropy of magnetic films

It is proposed that the magnetization-induced anisotropy of magnetic films of cubic crystal structure originates from the anisotropy of atomic pair ordering, shape anisotropy, and strain anisotropy resulting from the constraint of the magnetostriction strain imposed on the film by the substratc. Calculated are the three anisotropy constants and their sum K vs temperature for Ni, Fe, and 55%Ni-Fe films; the room temperature （RT） constants vs the substrate temperature Tt during deposition or annealing after deposition for Ni and 50%Ni Co films; the RT constants vs com- position fraction for Fe-Ni films with Tt = RT, 250℃ and 450℃, Co Ni films at Tt = RT, 100℃ and 320℃, and Fe-Co films with Tt = RT and 300℃; the spread of RT K vs composition fraction for Fe Ni films; and RT △K/K vs composition fraction for Fe-Ni and Co Ni films, where △K denotes the variation of K of the film that is detached from its substrate. The calculated curves well accord with the measurements. The irrelevancy of K to the substrate material and the fast kinetics of the annealing in a field applied in the direction of the hard axis are explained reasonably.

Ethanol extract from Gynostemma pentaphyllum ameliorates dopaminergic neuronal cell death in transgenic mice expressing mutant A53T human alpha-synuclein

Gynostemma(G.) pentaphyllum(Cucurbitaceae) contains various bioactive gypenosides. Ethanol extract from G. pentaphyllum(GP-EX) has been shown to have ameliorative effects on the death of dopaminergic neurons in animal models of Parkinson’s disease(PD) induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-and 6-hydroxydopamine. PD patients exhibit multiple symptoms, so PD-related research should combine neurotoxin models with genetic models. In the present study, we investigated the ameliorative effects of GP-EX, including gypenosides, on the cell death of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain of A53 T α-synuclein transgenic mouse models of PD(A53 T). Both GP-EX and gypenosides at 50 mg/kg per day were orally administered to the A53 T mice for 20 weeks.α-Synuclein-immunopositive cells and α-synuclein phosphorylation were increased in the midbrain of A53 T mice, which was reduced following treatment with GP-EX. Treatment with GP-EX modulated the reduced phosphorylation of tyrosine hydroxylase, extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK1/2), Bcl-2-associated death promoter(Bad) at Ser112, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK1/2) due to α-synuclein overexpression. In the A53 T group, GP-EX treatment prolonged the latency of the step-through passive avoidance test and shortened the transfer latency of the elevated plus maze test. Gypenosides treatment exhibited the effects and efficacy similar to those of GP-EX. Taken together, GP-EX, including gypenosides, has ameliorative effects on dopaminergic neuronal cell death due to the overexpression of α-synuclein by modulating ERK1/2, Bad at Ser112, and JNK1/2 signaling in the midbrain of A53 T mouse model of PD. Further studies are needed to investigate GP-EX as a treatment for neurodegenerative synucleinopathies, including PD. This study was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Chungbuk National University(approval No. CBNUA-956-16-01) on September 21, 2016.

Prevalence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding risk factors among the general population and osteoarthritis patients

AIM To assess the prevalence of possible risk factors of upper gastrointestinal bleeding(UGIB) and their agegroup specific trend among the general population and osteoarthritis *** We utilized data from the National Health InsuranceService that included claims data and results of the national health check-up program. Comorbid conditions(peptic ulcer, diabetes, liver disease, chronic renal failure, and gastroesophageal reflux disease), concomitant drugs(aspirin, clopidogrel, cilostazol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid, anticoagulants, and SSRI), personal habits(smoking, and alcohol consumption) were considered as possible UGIB risk factors. We randomly imputed the prevalence of infection in the data considering the age-specific prevalence of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection in Korea. The prevalence of various UGIB risk factors and the age-group specific trend of the prevalence were identified. Prevalence was compared between osteoarthritis patients and *** A total of 801926 subjects(93855 osteoarthritis patients) aged 20 and above were included. The prevalence of individual and concurrent multiple risk factors became higher as the age increased. The prevalence of each comorbid condition and concomitant drug were higher in osteoarthritis patients. Thirty-five point zero two percent of the overall population and 68.50% of osteoarthritis patients had at least one or more risk factors of UGIB. The prevalence of individual and concurrent multiple risk factors in younger age groups were also substantial. Comparison of brush and basket cytology in differential diagnosis of bile duct stricture at endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

BACKGROUND： A previous report has identified a significantly higher sensitivity of cancer detection for dedicated grasping basket than brushing at endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreato- graphy （ERCP）. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of Geenen brush and Dormia basket cytology in the differential diagnosis of bile duct stricture. METHOD： The current study enrolled one hundred and fourteen patients who underwent ERCP with both Geenen brush and Dormia basket cytology for the differential diagnosis of bile duct stricture at our institution between January 2008 and December 2012. RESULTS： We adopted sequential performances of cytologic samplings by using initial Geenen brush and subsequent Dormia basket cytology in 59 patients and initial Dormia basket and subsequent Geenen brush cytology in 55 patients. Presampling balloon dilatations and biliary stentings for the stricture were performed in 17 （14.9%） and 107 patients （93.9%）, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of Geenen brush cytology for the diagnosis of malignant bile duct stricture were 75.0%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 66.7% and 83.3%, respectively, and those of Dormia basket cytology were 64.5%, 100.0%, 100.0%, 58.5% and 76.3%, respectively （P=0.347 and 0.827 for sensitivity and accuracy, respectively）. The good and excellent cellular yields （≥grade 2） were obtained by Geenen brush and Dormia basket cytology in 88 （77.2%） and 79 （69.3%） patients, ***： The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of biliary sampling with a Dormia basket are comparable to those with conventional Geenen brush cytology in the detection of malignant bile duct stricture.

Therapeutic efficacy and stent patency of transhepatic portal vein stenting after surgery

AIM To evaluate portal vein(PV) stenosis and stent patency after hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, using abdominal computed tomography(CT).METHODS Percutaneous portal venous stenting was attempted in 22 patients with significant PV stenosis(> 50%)-after hepatobiliary or pancreatic surgery- diagnosed by abdominal CT. Stents were placed in various stenotic lesions after percutaneous transhepatic portography. Pressure gradient across the stenotic segment was measured in 14 patients. Stents were placed when the pressure gradient across the stenotic segment was > 5 mm Hg or PV stenosis was > 50%, as observed on transhepatic portography. Patients underwent followup abdominal CT and technical and clinical success, complications, and stent patency were *** Stent placement was successful in 21 patients(technical success rate: 95.5%). Stents were positioned through the main PV and superior mesenteric vein(n = 13), main PV(n = 2), right and main PV(n = 1), left and main PV(n = 4), or main PV and splenic vein(n = 1). Patients showed no complications after stent placement. The time between procedure and final follow-up CT was 41-761 d(mean: 374.5 d). Twenty stents remained patent during the entire follow-up. Stent obstruction-caused by invasion of the PV stent by a recurrent tumor- was observed in 1 patient in a follow-up CT performed after 155 d after the procedure. The cumulative stent patency rate was 95.7%. Small in-stent low-density areas were found in 11(55%) patients; however, during successive follow-up CT, the extent of these areas had *** Percutaneous transhepatic stent placement can be safe and effective in cases of PV stenosis after hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. Stents show excellent patency in follow-up abdominal CT, despite development of small in-stent low-density areas.

We investigated the anti-angiogenic effects of the water extract of HangAmDan (WEHAD),which is a crude extract of nine Korean medicinal substances of animal and plant *** human umbilical vein endothelial cells,WEHAD significantly inhibited bFGF-induced proliferation,adhesion,migration,and capillary tube *** used an antibody array to perform an analysis of signaling proteins,which showed up-regulated expression of various proteins including RAD51,RAD52,and p73,and down-regulated expression of *** vessel formation in a chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) treated with WEHAD was markedly reduced in length compared with a PBS-treated control *** results suggest that inhibition of angiogenesis by WEHAD may be the mechanism of action for the anti-cancer effects of HAD.
