The quality of escalator signage for public safety in Malaysia:an observational study

Objective:Escalator signage could be playing a vital role to alert users for safe use of *** study aimed to evaluate the availability,standardization,and content of safety information on escalator signage in the shopping ***:An observational study was conducted from November 2017 to February 2018 to assess the availability,standardization of safety information among the signage inside the shopping mall,and the content of safety information for public safety in Malaysia.A checklist was developed by adapting escalator safety guidelines from seven countries and regions including *** collctors identified from the selected states were required to capture three photographs at different angles of the escalator signage for each ascending and descending directions at each entrance of the *** analysis was performed;each criterion was presented in frequency and ***:A total of 268 escalators from 84 shopping malls in 9 states of Malaysia were *** operating escalators were not equipped with *** than one-ifth(23.0%)of the signage was not standardized within the *** majority of safety information was displayed in the form of a pictogram,a minority of signage displayed information in both pictogram and text format:"children must hold hand"(12.7%)and"be careful of long clothing"(10.8%),***,"toddlers should be carried"(8.6%)and"take extra care with rubber shoes/tied shoes/laces"(30.2%)were found absent in most of the ***:Escalator signage was present in almost all of the escalators ***,non-standardization of the signage of escalators should warrant the attention of relevant authorities to revise the safety guideline s and improve the quality of escalator.

Robust interface and excellent as-built mechanical properties of Ti–6Al–4V fabricated through laser-aided additive manufacturing with powder and wire

The feasibility of manufacturing Ti-6Al-4V samples through a combination of laser-aided additive manufacturing with powder(LAAM_(p))and wire(LAAM_(w))was explored.A process study was first conducted to successfully circumvent defects in Ti-6Al-4V deposits for LAAM_(p) and LAAM_(w),*** the optimized process parameters,robust interfaces were achieved between powder/wire deposits and the forged substrate,as well as between powder and wire *** characterization results revealed the epitaxial prior β grains in the deposited Ti-6Al-4V,wherein the powder deposit was dominated by a finerα′microstructure and the wire deposit was characterized by lamellar α *** mechanisms of microstructure formation and correlation with mechanical behavior were analyzed and *** mechanical properties of the interfacial samples can meet the requirements of the relevant Aerospace Material Specifications(AMS 6932)even without post heat *** fracture occurred within the interfacial area,further suggesting the robust *** findings of this study highlighted the feasibility of combining LAAM_(p) and LAAM_(w) in the direct manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V parts in accordance with the required dimensional resolution and deposition rate,together with sound strength and ductility balance in the as-built condition.

Two Potent α3/5 Conotoxins from Piscivorous Conus achatinus

Every cone snail produces a mixture of different conotoxins and secretes them to immobilize their prey and predators. α3/5 Conotoxins, isolated from fish-hunting cone snails, target muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The structure and function of α3/5 conotoxin from the piscivorous Conus achatinus have not been studied. We synthesized two pentadecamer peptides, Ac 1.1 a and Ac 1.1 b, with appropriate disulfide bonding, based on cDNA sequences of α3/5 conotoxins from C. achatinus. Ac 1.1 a and Ac 1.1 b differ by only one amino acid residue. They have similar potency on blocking recombinant mouse muscle acetylcholine receptor expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes, with IC50values of 36 nM and 26 nM, respectively. For Ac 1.1b, deletion of the first three N-terminal amino acids did not change its activity, indicating that the Nterminus is not involved in the interaction with its receptor. Furthermore, our experiments indicate that both toxins strongly prefer the α1-δ subunit interface instead of the α1-γ binding site on the mouse muscle nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. These peptides provide additional tools for the study of the structure and function of nicotinic receptor.

Quantitative Analysis of the Silk Moth＇s Chemical Plume Tracing Locomotion Using a Hierarchical Classification Method

The silk moth （Bombyx mori） exhibits efficient Chemical Plume Tracing （CPT）, which is ideal for biomimetics. However, there is insufficient quantitative understanding of its CPT behavior. We propose a hierarchical classification method to segment its natural CPT locomotion and to build its inverse model for detecting stimulus input. This provides the basis for quantitative analysis. The Gaussian mixture model with expectation-maximization algorithm is used first for unsupervised classification to decompose CPT locomotion data into Gaussian density components that represent a set of quantified elemental motions. A heuristic behavioral rule is used to categorize these components to eliminate components that are descriptive of the same motion. Then, the echo state network is used for supervised classification to evaluate segmented elemental motions and to compare CPT locomotion among different moths. In this case, categorized elemental motions are used as the training data to estimate stimulus time. We successfully built the inverse CPT behavioral model of the silk moth to detect stimulus input with good accuracy. The quantitative analysis indicates that silk moths exhibit behavioral singularity and time dependency in their CPT locomotion, which is dominated by its singularity.

Modeling fluid–particle interaction in dilute-phase turbulentliquid–particle flow simulation

The present work examines the predictive capability of a two-fluid CFD model that is based on the kinetic theory of granular flow in simulating dilute-phase turbulent liquid-particle pipe flows in which the inter- stitial fluid effect on the particle fluctuating motion is significant. The impacts of employing different drag correlations and turbulence closure models to describe the fluid-particle interactions （i.e. drag force and long-range interaction） are examined at both the mean and fluctuating velocity levels. The model pre- dictions are validated using experimental data of turbulent liquid-particle flows in a vertical pipe at different particle Reynolds numbers （Rep 〉 400 and Rep 〈 400）, which characterize the importance of the vortex shedding phenomenon in the fluid-phase turbulence modulation. The results indicate that （1） the fluctuating velocity level predictions at different Rep are highly sensitive to the drag correlation selec- tion and （2） different turbulence closure models must be employed to accurately describe the long-range fluid-particle interaction in each phase. In general, good agreement is found between the model predic- tions and the experimental data at both the mean and fluctuating velocity levels provided that appropriate combinations of the drag correlation and the turbulence closure model are selected depending on Rep. 2009 Chinese Society of Particuology and Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The conventional vector addition theorem is written in a compact *** a new and succinct derivation of the vector addition theorem is presented thatis as close to the derivation of the scalar addition theorem. Newly derived expressionsin this new derivation are used to diagonalize the vector addition theorem. A Cu/ZnO Nanowire/Cu Resistive Switching Device

A new device has been realized using flip-chip joining two printed circuit boards(PCBs) on which zinc oxide(ZnO) nanowires were synthesized. Energy dispersive X-ray measurement has been conducted for the ZnO nanowires, confirming that Cu elements have been diffused into the nanowires during the chemical growth process. From I-V measurements, this Cu/ZnO nanowire/Cu structure exhibits a resistive tuning behaviour, which varies greatly with the frequency of the applied sinusoidal source.
