Interruption of blood flow and gas exchange to the fetus in the perinatal period, known as perinatal asphyxia, can, if significant, trigger a cascade of neuronal injury, leading on to neonatal encephalopathy(NE) and resultant long-term damage. While the majority of infants who are exposed to perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia will recover quickly and go on to have a completely normal survival, a proportion will suffer from an evolving clinical encephalopathy termed hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy(HIE) or NE if the diagnosis is unclear. Resultant complications of HIE/NE are wide-ranging and may affect the motor, sensory, cognitive and behavioural outcome of the child. The advent of therapeutic hypothermia as a neuroprotective treatment for those with moderate and severe encephalopathy has improved prognosis. Outcome prediction in these infants has changed, but is more important than ever, as hypothermia is a time sensitive intervention, with a very narrow therapeutic window. To identify those who will benefit from current and emerging neuroprotective therapies we must be able to establish the severity of their injury soon after birth. Currently available indicators such as blood biochemistry, clinical examination and electrophysiology are limited. Emerging biological and physiological markers have the potential to improve our ability to select those infants who will benefit most from intervention. Biomarkers identified from work in proteomics, metabolomics and transcriptomics as well as physiological markers such as heart rate variability, EEG analysis and radiological imaging when combined with neuroprotective measures have the potential to improve outcome in HIE/NE. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the literature in regards to short and longterm outcome following perinatal asphyxia, and to discuss the prediction of this outcome in the early hours after birth when intervention is most crucial; looking at both currently available tools and introducing novel

Objective： Comparison of global end-diastolic volume index （GEDVI） obtained by femoral and jugular transpulmonary thermodilution （TPTD） indicator injections using the EV1000NolumnView device （Edwards Lifesci- ences, Irvine, USA）. methods： In an 87-year-old woman with hypovolemic shock and equipped with both jugular and femoral vein access and monitored with the EV1000NolumeView device, we recorded 10 datasets, each comprising duplicate TPTD via femoral access and duplicate TPTD （20 ml cold saline） via jugular access. Results： mean femoral GEDVI （（674.6±52.3） ml/m2） was significantly higher than jugular GEDVI （（552.3±69.7） ml/m2）, with P=-0.003. Bland-Airman analysis demonstrated a bias of （＋122±61） ml/m2, limits of agreement of -16 and ＋260 ml/m2, and a percentage error of 22%. Use of the correction-formula recently suggested for the PiCCO device significantly reduced bias and percentage error. Similarly, mean values of parameters derived from GEDVI such as pulmonary vascular permeability index （PVPI; 1.244±0.101 vs. 1.522±0.139; P〈0.001） and global ejection fraction （GEF; （24.7±1.6）% vs. （28.1±1.8）%; P〈0.001） were significantly different in the case of femoral compared to jugular indicator injection. Fur- thermore, the mean cardiac index derived from femoral indicator injection （（4.50±0.36） L/（min.m2）） was significantly higher （P=0.02） than that derived from jugular indicator injection （（4.12±0.44） L/（min.m2））, resulting in a bias of （＋0.38±0.37） L/（min.m2） and a percentage error of 19.4%. Conclusions： Femoral access for indicator injection results in markedly altered values provided by the EV1000NolumeView , particularly for GEDVI, PVPI, and GEF.

Large-scale gridded population datasets are usually produced for the year of input census data using a top-down approach and projected backward and forward in time using national growth *** temporal projections do not include any subnational variation in population distribution trends and ignore changes in geographical covariates such as urban land cover *** predictions of population distribution changes over time require the use of a limited number of covariates that are time-invariant or temporally *** we make use of recently released multi-temporal high-resolution global settlement layers,historical census data and latest developments in population distribution modelling methods to reconstruct population distribution changes over 30 years across the Kenyan *** explore the methodological challenges associated with the production of gridded population distribution time-series in data-scarce countries and show that trade-offs have to be found between spatial and temporal resolutions when selecting the best modelling *** used to fill data gaps may vary according to the local context and the objective of the *** work will hopefully serve as a benchmark for future developments of population distribution time-series that are increasingly required for population-at-risk estimations and spatial modelling in various fields.

Exposure to diesel engine exhaust(DE) is a major concern in underground mines. It has been linked to cardiopulmonary diseases and is classified as a human carcinogen. The goal of this study is to assess DE exposures in workers at two underground gold mines, to compare exposure levels within and between the mines, and to compare different methods of measuring DE exposures, namely respirable combustible dust(RCD), elemental carbon(EC) and total carbon(TC). Ambient and personal breathing zone(PBZ) measurements were taken. Side-by-side monitoring of RCD and of the respirable fraction of EC and TC(EC_Rand TC_R) was carried out in the workers' breathing zone during full-shift *** ambient measurements, in addition to EC_R, TC_Rand RCD, a submicron aerosol fraction(less than 1 mm) of EC and TC was also sampled(EC_1and TC_1). Average ambient results of 240 mg/m^3 in RCD, 150 mg/m^3 in EC_Rand 210 mg/m^3 in TC_Rare obtained. Average PBZ results of 190 mg/m^3 in RCD,84 mg/m^3 in EC3Rand 150 mg/min TC_Rare obtained. Very good correlation is found between EC_Rand EC_1 with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.99(p med concentrations. No differences are reported between EC_Rand EC_1, nor between TC_Rand TC_1, since ratios are equal to 1.04, close to 1, in both cases. Highest exposures are reported for loadhaul-dump(LHD) and jumbo drill operators and conventional miners. Significant exposure differences are reported between mines for truck and LHD operators(p mbient results. The variability observed in the TC_R/EC_Rratio shows that interferences from non-diesel related organic carbon can skew the interpretation of results when relying only on TC data.

Although nanocomposites have recently attracted special interest in the tissue engineering area,due to their potential to reinforce scaffolds for hard tissues applications,a number of variables must be set prior to any clinical *** manuscript addresses the evaluation of thermo-mechanical properties and of cell proliferation of cellulose nanocrystals(CNC),poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT),poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)films and their bionanocomposites with 2 wt% of CNC obtained by casting *** nanocrystals extracted from Balsa wood by acid hydrolysis were used as a reinforcing phase in PBAT and PCL matrix *** films and pure CNC at different concentrations were cultured with osteoblasts mG-63 and the cell proliferation was assessed by AlamarBlue?*** thermal-mechanical properties of the films were evaluated by dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis(DmTA).It was found by DmTA that the CNC acted as reinforcing *** addition of CNCs in the PBAT and PCL matrices induced higher storage moduli due to the reinforcement effects of *** cell viability results showed that neat CNC favored osteoblast proliferation and both PBAT and PCL films incorporated with CNC were biocompatible and supported cell proliferation along *** nature of the polymeric matrix or the presence of CNC practically did not affect the cell proliferation,confirming they have no in vitro *** features make cellulose nanocrystals a suitable candidate for the reinforcement of biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering and biomedical applications.
