Effects of vacuum-assisted closure and Drotrecogin alpha on inflammatory markers in severe acute pancreatitis

In severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) inflammatory processes foster necrosis, cellular lysis and liberation of vasoactive substances associated with multiple organ failure. The effects of vacuum-assisted closure and Drotrecogin alpha on inflammatory cytokines were evaluated in SAP patients with infected necrosis. Methods: Forty-six patients were included in three groups: Group 1, necrosectomy and abdominal cavity washing;Group 2, necrosectomy plus vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), and Group 3, necrossectomy plus VAC plus Drotrecogin alpha. Immunoreactive IL-32, TNF-α, IL-6, TGF-β and IL-2 cytokines were quantified with ELISA method. Results: IL-32 was significantly increased in all patients, predominantly the non-survivor of Group 3 (p 0.0001). Group 2 maintained increased IL-32 levels throughout. Peak TNF-α was observed in non-survivors of Groups 1 and 2, with a frank tendency to decrease in Group 3. The IL-6 was increased, sustained throughout the study, peaking at the onset in non-survivors. At the end IL-6 tended to diminish, predominantly in survivors. TNF-α and IL-6 were significantly increased on hospitalization, with a maximum peak in non-survivors of all groups. Initial values of TGF-β were significantly increased in survivors of the three groups, and were significantly diminished in non-survivors;affecting pancreas regeneration and favoring systemic inflammation, with possible multiple-organ repercussions. IL-2 levels were elevated, predominantly in non-survivors of Group 1. There was positive correlation between the increase IL-32 and TNF-α, and negative correlation between the increase in TNF-α and decrease in TGF-β;and, a tendency for negative correlation between the IL-2 increased and TGF-β levels. Conclusion: We found a generalized, sustained inflammatory state that fosters a torpid outcome in SAP patients.

A Protocol for Fractal Studies on Porosity of Porous Media: High Quality Soil Porosity Images

A protocol for obtaining digital images from natural porous media with a wide range of pore sizes, intended for fractal studies of the porosity, is proposed. Soil porosity is used as para- digm of complex natural porous media in this study. The use of several imaging devices and fluores- cent compounds to enhance the contrast between the solid and the pore phase is tested. Finally a protocol is reached using a photo camera and a confocal microscope. It is the first time that confocal microscopy is used for this purpose. Artificial porous images are created through random Sierpinski carpet fractals and the statistical information of real soil images. These ground truth images are used in an objective comparison of automatic segmentation algorithms for the obtained images. A statistical classification on the performance of several automatic segmentation algorithms for this tv^e of images is reached.

On the non-evolution of the dependence of black hole masses on bolometric luminosities for QSOs

There are extremely luminous quasi stellar objects （QSOs） at high redshift which are absent at low redshift. The lower luminosities at low redshifts can be understood as the external manifestation of either a lower Eddington ratio or a lower mass. To distinguish between both effects, we determine the possible dependence of masses and Eddington ratios of QSOs with a fixed luminosity as a function of redshifts; this avoids the Malmquist bias or any other selection effect. For the masses and Eddington ratios derived for a sample of QSOs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we model their evolution by a double linear fit separating the dependence on redshifts and luminosities. The validity of the fits and possible systematic effects were tested by the use of different estimators of masses or bolometric luminosities, and possible intergalactic extinction effects. The results do not show any significant evolution of black hole masses or Eddington ratios for equal luminosity QSOs. The black hole mass only depends on the bolometric luminosity without significant dependence on the redshift as （M BH/10 9 M ）≈ 3.4 （L bol/10 47 erg s-1）0.65 on average for z ≤ 5. This must not be confused with the possible evolution in the formation of black holes in QSOs. The variations of the environment might influence the formation of the black holes but not their subsequent accretion. It also leaves a question to be solved： Why are there not QSOs with very high mass at low redshift？ A brief discussion of the possible reasons for this is tentatively pointed out.

A building energy models calibration methodology based on inverse modelling approach

Nowadays,building energy models(BEMs)are widely used,particularly in the assessment of energy consumption in buildings to address the potential savings that can be *** realisation of a dynamic energy model based on high-fidelity physics(white-box models)requires a tuning process to fit the model to reality,due to many uncertainties *** some research trends try to reduce this performance gap by modulating different types of experimental parameters such as:capacitances or *** EnergyPlus simulation software,in its latest versions,has implemented an object:HybridModel:Zone that calculates the infiltration and internal mass of buildings using an inverse modelling approach that employs only the measured indoor temperature data to invert the heat balance equation for the zone under *** main objective of this paper is to reduce the execution time and uncertainties in the development of quality energy models by generating a new calibration methodology that implements this *** uses,as a starting point,a research created by the authors of this study,which was empirically and comparatively validated against the energy models developed by the participants in Annex *** is also worth highlighting the empirical validation of the HybridModel:Zone object,since it was activated in all scenarios where its execution is possible:periods of seven days or more of free oscillation and periods in which the building is under *** findings are *** data generated with the new methodology,if compared with those produced by the baseline model,improve their resemblance to the real ones by 22.9%.While those of its predecessor did it by 15.6%.For this study,the two dwellings foreseen in Annex 58 of the IEA ECB project have been modelled and their real monitoring data have been used.

The effect of water deficit was determined on both in vitro and soil seedling as well as in cells in suspension of Agave americana *** order to do the establishment of cells,the formation of callus was induced;for it two auxins were evaluated:2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2,4-D)and 4-mino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid(picloram)at three concentrations(0.25,0.5 and 0.75 mg L−1)in three explants(leaf,root and meristems)cultured in MS semisolid *** callogenesis response was related to the type and section of the explant,as well as the regulator used,and a cell suspension was established using 0.5 mg L−1 naphthaleneacetic acid(NAA)+0.5 mg L−1 Benzylaminopurine(BAP).Seedlings were exposed to polyethyleneglycol(15%and 30%w/v)with a water potential of−0.87 and−2.67 MPa,respectively,under soil *** stress was applied through restricted *** weight,root system growth,and chlorophyll concentration were some of the parameters that were affected by the effect of water deficit on *** *** concentration values were significantly decreased by 15 at 30%PEG(19.6 SPAD units)compared to the control *** in vitro plants,the highest concentration of proline was found in the roots,being the treatment with 30%polyethylene glycol where the highest concentration of this osmoregulator was obtained(62.5 mg g−1 DW).Under restricted irrigation conditions,an increase in proline concentration was observed both in the aerial part(2.2μg 100 g−1 DW)and in the root system(1.8μg 100 g−1 DW).However,the concentrations found were approximately ten times greater,less than those found under in vitro ***,the accumulation of proline can be considered an indicator of stress in Agave Americana *** in vitro.

BACKGROUND Radicular cyst is a lesion of odontogenic origin that arises from epithelial remains due to periapical periodontitis caused by inflammatory reactions generated at the apex of affected teeth with infected or necrotic *** therapeutic mana gement of radicular cysts is *** is only one case report of enucleation of a radicular cyst managed with microsurgery and apicoectomy,but without the use of the guided tissue regeneration(GTR)technique in the same surgical *** present clinical case describes the management of a radicular cyst with microsurgical approach,performance of an apicoectomy of the tooth associated with the entity,application of GTR technique,use of a resorbable membrane of type I bovine collagen,and bovine *** SUMMARY A 68-year-old patient presented with a radicular cyst from an upper lateral *** microsurgical management used was aimed at enucleating the chemical membrane,performing apicoectomy of the tooth along with careful and precise retrograde filling,and implementing GTR technique using a resorbable collagen membrane and bovine *** diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed using histopathological *** patient underwent follow-up evaluations at 10 and 30 d *** 4 months postoperative evaluation,she remained asymptomatic,and radiographs showed significant periapical healing with adequate bone *** These results suggest that microsurgical management using the GTR technique with collagen membrane and xenograft,contributes to bone regeneration.

This work reports the growth and characterization of p-AlInN layers doped with Mg by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy(PAMBE).AlInN was grown with an Al molar fraction of 0.80 by metal-modulated epitaxy(MME)with a thickness of 180 nm on Si(111)substrates using AlN as buffer *** substrate temperatures were used to enhance the incorporation of indium atoms into the alloy without clustering,as confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD).Cathodoluminescence measurements revealed ultraviolet(UV)range ***,Hall effect measurements indicated a maximum hole mobility of 146 cm^(2)/(V∙s),corresponding to a free hole concentration of 1.23×10^(19)cm^(−3).The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)estimating the alloy composition and extracting the Fermi level by valence band ***-doped AlInN layers were studied for use as the electron-blocking layer(EBL)in LED *** varied the Al composition in the EBL from 0.84 to 0.96 molar fraction to assess its theoretical effects on electroluminescence,carrier concentration,and electric field,using SILVACO *** results from this study highlight the importance and capability of producing high-quality Mg-doped p-AlInN layers through *** simulations suggest that an Al content of 0.86 is optimal for achieving desired outcomes in electroluminescence,carrier concentration,and electric field.
