Chemical pesticides tend to accumulate in soil, resulting in human and environmental health risks. Hence, alternative methodologies involving chemical pesticides are beneficial for the control of agricultural pests. Metarhizium anisopliae is an entomopathogenic fungus that acts on different developmental stages of pest insects such as Diatraea saccharalis, a holometabolic lepidopteran with high potential for infestation in sugarcane crops. The present study evaluated the biocontrol effect of M. anisopliae isolates MT and E9 on D. saccharalis eggs at different ages by investigating the external and internal morphological alterations in treated eggs. Conidial suspensions of M. anisopliae isolated from MT and E9 at concentrations of 107 conidia/mL were applied to eggs of D. saccharalisdana;"> aged 0, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h. The eggs were observed every 24 h during development (0 h to 144 h). Samples were collected for observational, histological, and ultrastructural analyses. We found that the MT isolate caused 100% inviability of eggs aged 0 - 72 h, 144 h after the bioassays, while the effect of the E9 isolate varied between 49.40% and 93.75%. M

Extraction of compounds from pineapple by-products can be affected by operational conditions and *** study aimed to(i)carry out the ultrasound-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from pineapple peels using different types of solvents and operating conditions and(ii)characterize the extracts *** solvents with the highest efficiency in extracting total phenolic compounds(TPC),namely water,ethanol,and acid solution(1 mol L−1 HCl),were tested in different proportions using a simplex-centroid mixture *** effects of time(5–45 min),temperature(30–60°C),and ultrasonic power(0–100 W)were also *** were assessed for antioxidant potential,phenolic profile,and sugar *** contents ranged from 219.75 to 405.06 mg GAE 100 g−1,with the highest value obtained in the mixture of ethanol(0.50)and acid solution(0.50).The extract with the highest TPC content and antioxidant activity was obtained at 60°C,50 W of ultrasonic power and 30 *** extract obtained under these conditions contained fructose(7.17 g 100 g−1)and glucose(8.29 g 100 g−1)as major soluble sugars and caffeic acid(217.65 mg 100 g−1)as the major phenolic ***,the extraction of compounds under the conditions studied is an alternative to the valorization of pineapple waste.

Fractionation of rare earth elements（REE） and other trace metal concentrations（Th, U, Cd,Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn） between mangrove sediments and claw muscles and shells of male crabs（Ucides cordatus） from a subtropical estuary highly impacted by fertilizer industry activities was investigated. This is the first record of REE distribution in these organisms,and the results showed higher accumulations of these metals, U and Th in shells, probably related to the replacement of Ca during molting. Contents of Cd, Cr and Ni were similar in both tissues, but Cu, Zn and Pb were mostly accumulated in the claw muscle with concentrations above those considered safe for human consumption according to the Brazilian legislation. REE fractionation was different in the analyzed tissues being softer in the shells. The results provided evidences that the water absorbed during molting controls the chemistry of REE in shells. In contrast, the chemistry of REE in the claw muscle, in which was observed preferential absorption of light REE, is controlled by diet. REE fractionation obtained for the claw muscles was closely correlated to the observed in the contaminated substrate and in materials related to the production of phosphate fertilizers（contamination source）, which supports their transference to this Ucides cordatus tissue without fractionation by the ingestion of sediments. Our results showed the potential use of crab tissues for monitoring REE and trace element sources in mangrove areas, with claw muscle exhibiting the contaminant source fingerprint.

The complex meniscus tissue plays a critical role in the knee. The high susceptibility to injury has led to an intense pursuit for better tissue engineering regenerative strategies, where scaffolds play a major role. In this study, indirect printed hierarchical multilayered sca ffolds composed by a silk fibroin (SF) upper layer and an 80/20 (w/w) ratio of SF/ionic-doped β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bottom layer were developed. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between two types of sca ffolds pro- duced using di fferent SF concentrations, i.e., 8% (w/v) (Hi8) and 16% (w/v) (Hi16) was performed. In terms of architecture and morphology, the produced sca ffolds presented homogeneous porosity in both layers and no di fferences were observed when comparing both sca ffolds. A decrease in terms of mechanical performance of the sca ffolds was observed when SF concentration decreased from 16 to 8% (w/v). Hi16 revealed a static compressive modulus of 0.66 ± 0.05 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 2.17 ± 0.25 to 3.19 ± 0.38 MPa. By its turn, Hi8 presented a compressive modulus of 0.27 ± 0.08 MPa and dynamical mechanical properties ranging from 1.03 ± 0.08 MPa to 1.56 ± 0.13 MPa. In vitro bioactivity studies showed formation of apatite crystals onto the surface of Hi8 and Hi16 bottom layers. Human meniscus cells (hMCs) and human primary osteoblasts were cultured separately onto the top layer (SF8 and SF16) and bottom layer (SF8/TCP and SF16/TCP) of the hierarchical sca ffolds Hi8 and Hi16, respectively. Both cell types showed good adhesion and proliferation as denoted by the live/dead staining, Alamar Blue assay and DNA quanti fication analysis. Subcutaneous implantation in mice revealed weak in flammation and sca ffold’s integrity. AIM: To evaluate the antioxidant effect of N-acetylcysteine(NAC) on the stomach of rats with portal ***: Twenty-four male Wistar rats weighing ± 250 g were divided into four experimental groups(n =6 each): Sham-operated(SO),SO + NAC,partial portal vein ligation(PPVL),and PPVL + NAC. Treatment with NAC in a dose of 10 mg/kg(i.p.) diluted in 0.6 m L of saline solution was administered daily for 7 d starting 8 d after the surgery. Animals from the PPVL and SO group received saline solution(0.6 m L) for the same period of time as the PPVL + NAC and SO + NAC group. On the 15 th day the animals were anesthetized and we evaluated portal pressure by cannulating mesenteric artery. After,we removed the stomach for further analysis. We performed immunohistochemical analysis for endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NOS),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),and nitrotirosine(NTT) proteins in stomach. We also evaluated e NOS and VEGF by Western blot analysis and assessed DNA damage in blood samples by the comet ***: The portal hypertension group exhibited increases in portal pressure when compared to SO group(29.8 ± 1.8 vs 12.0 ± 0.3 mm Hg)(P damage by comet assay,and observed an increase on damage index and damage frequency on those animals.
