Morphological Identification of Edible Termites (Isoptera) in Luanda Sub-County, Kenya

Termites are social insects that live in colonies underground. Globally, there are 3000 termite species, of which 39% are found in Africa. Termites are used as food and livestock feed in most communities of the world. In Kenya, termites are consumed by many communities, especially in the western region. Termite species diversity across different parts of the Luanda sub-county was established as there are many edible and non-edible species in the area. This study assessed the species diversity of termites in Luanda sub-county, and characterized them morphologically. Termites were sampled in Luanda sub-county using the line transect method. The collected termites were preserved in tubes containing 70% Ethanol. The preserved samples were taken to the National Museums of Kenya for morphological identification up to species level. Species richness of each habitat was analyzed for diversity (Shannon-Wiener) index and Shannon index by using Vegan package version 1.16 - 32 in R. The differences in species composition and diversity of termites were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Morphological identification recorded seven species, namely, Macrotermes herus, Macrotermes spp1, Macrotermes sp1, pseudocanthotermes grandiceps, Macrotermes bellicosus, Macrotermes spp2 and pseudocanthotermes militaris. The results of this study showed that the Shannon diversity index H was 0.3606 while Simpson index D was 0.20644, which implied a high species diversity of termites in Luanda sub-county a leading producer of edible termites in Kenya.

Modelling behavioural interactions of drivers' in mixed traffic conditions

Mixed traffic conditions are often prevalent in developing economies such as India, China, Bangladesh, etc. and are characterised by the presence of multiple vehicle types. The presence of multiple vehicle types with varying dynamic and static characteristics results in vehicle-type dependent driving behaviours. For instance, drivers of small sized vehicles such as motorbikes accelerate and decelerate at will, maintain shorter safe gaps with the lead vehicles, and accept smaller lateral clearances to make lateral movements within and across lanes breaking the lane discipline. On the other hand, drivers of heavy vehicles such as trucks have less flexibility in performing the acceleration/deceleration and lateral movement operations. Thus, the representation of mixed traffic systems requires model- ling vehicle-type dependent driving behaviours. This paper first establishes the effect of vehicle type on the longitudinal and lateral movement behaviours of drivers using the trajectory data collected in India and subsequently presents the proposed vehicle-type dependent driver behavioural models based on the same dataset. The efficiency of the proposed models is tested by implementing them in a simulation framework compatible with non-lane-based movements of vehicles and cross validating with the field data. The results indicate better predictability of the driver behaviour and thus more realistic rep- resentation in the mixed traffic systems. Moreover, the simulator hinged upon the pro- posed behavioural models will be useful in evaluating alternate traffic improvement initiatives and help the transport planners to design the transport systems of developing countries in an efficient and sustainable manner.

purpose The aim was to explore five established SNps(rs1815739,rs1805086,rs2700352,rs28497577,and rs28357094)that are known to modulate skeletal muscle protein kinetics in response to creatine *** A randomized,placebo-controlled,repeated measures design was ***(n=152)were rand-omized divided into one of two groups:CREA(20 g/day creatine monohydrate)or pLAC:(dextrose)for 7 *** were assessed,and participants were classified *** and after supplementation,anthropometrics(height and body mass)and performance measures(vertical jump,countermovement vertical jump,squat jump,abdominal crunches,and maximum push-ups)were *** CREA gained more body mass than pLAC(CREA:Δ0.864±0.06 kg;pLAC:Δ0.154±0.07 kg,pp,the presence of an A allele for the MYLK1 polymorphism was related to changes in countermovement jump height(p=0.027;effect size[d]=0.41)and leg power(p=0.040,effect size[d]=0.18).The total number of abdominal crunches after supplementation was influenced by treatments and Spp1 gene(p=0.041).A higher number of abdominal crunches was associated with the G allele in the CREA group and the TT genotype in the pLAC group(effect size[d]=0.04).Conclusion Collectively,short-term creatine supplementation increased body mass but was unable to alter muscle ***,following creatine supplementation,participants expressing A alleles in the MYLK1 polymorphism had a greater increase in jump height and leg power and participants expressing G alleles in the Spp1 gene had greater improve-ments in abdominal crunch performance.

Control of Cell Wall Extensibility during pollen Tube Growth

In this review, we address the question of how the tip-growing pollen tube achieves its rapid rate of elongation while maintaining an intact cell wall. Although turgor is essential for growth to occur, the local expansion rate is controlled by local changes in the viscosity of the apical wall. We focus on several different structures and underly- ing processes that are thought to be major participants including exocytosis, the organization and activity of the actin cytoskeleton, calcium and proton physiology, and cellular energetics. We think that the actin cytoskeleton, in particular the apical cortical actin fringe, directs the flow of vesicles to the apical domain, where they fuse with the plasma mem- brane and contribute their contents to the expanding cell wall. While pH gradients, as generated by a proton-ATpase located on the plasma membrane along the side of the clear zone, may regulate rapid actin turnover and new polymeri- zation in the fringe, the tip-focused calcium gradient biases secretion towards the polar axis. The recent data showing that exocytosis of new wall material precedes and predicts the process of cell elongation provide support for the idea that the intussusception of newly secreted pectin contributes to decreases in apical wall viscosity and to cell expansion. Other prime factors will be the localization and activity of the enzyme pectin methyl-esterase, and the chelation of calcium by pectic acids. Finally, we acknowledge a role for reactive oxygen species in the control of wall viscosity.

Small molecule peptides and their derivatives are an emerging class of supramolecular hydrogelators that have attracted rapidly growing interest in the fields of drug delivery and regenerative medicine due to their inherent biodegradability and biocompatibility, as well as versatility in molecular design and ease of synthesis. Built upon the directional, intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking, peptide-based molecular units can associate in aqueous solution into filamentous assemblies of various sizes and shapes. Under appropriate conditions, these filamentous assemblies can percolate into a 3D network with materials properties tailorable for specific biomedical applications. In this review, we survey the literature published over the past three years in the development of peptide-based hydrogelators for biomedical applications. We highlight several representative examples and center our discussion on the fundamentals of molecular design, assembly, and gelation conditions.

Experimental Investigation on the Thermal properties of Gypsum plaster-Rice Husk Ash Composite

This experimental investigation aims at evaluating the thermal properties of rice husk ash (RHA)—filled gypsum plaster composite for potential applications, as insulating materials. The thermal conductivities of composites of gypsum plaster reinforced with RHA at 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% volume fractions were determined experimentally using Lee’s disc method. The experimental results show that integrating RHA reduces the thermal conductivity of gypsum plaster and improves its insulation capacity. The results obtained from the experiments were compared with the Rule of Mixture Model, Maxwell Model, and Russell Model. It was observed that the thermal conductivities obtained from experiments and the theoretical models decreased with an increase in the volume fraction of RHA. The errors associated with the models with respect to experimental results are on the average of 28.7% for Mixture Rule, 31.6% for Russel Model, and 18.8% for the Maxwell Model. An agricultural waste like RHA can be beneficially used for the preparation of composites and, due to improved insulation capability, these composites can be used for applications such as insulation boards and sheathing, hardboard, ceilings of roofs, decorations, etc.
