Experimental investigation of damage behavior of RC frame members including non-seismically designed columns

Reinforced concrete （RC） frame structures are one of the mostly common used structural systems, and their seismic performance is largely determined by the performance of columns and beams. This paper describes horizontal cyclic loading tests often column and three beam specimens, some of which were designed according to the current seismic design code and others were designed according to the early non-seismic Chinese design code, aiming at reporting the behavior of the damaged or collapsed RC frame strctures observed during the Wenchuan earthquake. The effects of axial load ratio, shear span ratio, and transverse and longitudinal reinforcement ratio on hysteresis behavior, ductility and damage progress were incorporated in the experimental study. Test results indicate that the non-seismically designed columns show premature shear failure, and yield larger maximum residual crack widths and more concrete spalling than the seismically designed columns. In addition, longitudinal steel reinforcement rebars were severely buckled. The axial load ratio and shear span ratio proved to be the most important factors affecting the ductility, crack opening width and closing ability, while the longitudinal reinforcement ratio had only a minor effect on column ductility, but exhibited more influence on beam ductility. Finally, the transverse reinforcement ratio did not influence the maximum residual crack width and closing ability of the seismically designed columns.

Nanoparticles have recendy attracted extensive attention in view of their great potential in biomedicine and bioanalytical applications. Single particle detection via light scattering offers a simple and efficient approach for the size, size distribution, and concentration analysis of nanoparticles. In particular, intrinsic heterogeneity or rare events masked by ensemble averaging can be revealed. However, the sixth power dependence of Rayleigh scattering on particle size makes it very challenging to detect individual nanoparficles of small sizes. This article is intended to provide an overview of recent progress in the development of techniques based on light scattering for the detection of single nanoparticles.

Modeling and prediction for the acute toxicity of pesticide mixtures to the freshwater luminescent bacterium Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67

In China, water pollution by pesticide mixtures has constituted a serious environmental problem due to potential toxicity and bioaccumulation. But few pesticide combinations have exactly similar and dissimilar mechanisms of action. For this purpose, in tests with the freshwater luminescent bacterium （Vibrio qinghaiensis sp.-Q67）, ten pesticides, including three herbicides and seven insecticides, were selected as test substances. Concentration response analysis was performed for ten individual substances, and for mixtures containing all ten substances in twelve different concentration ratios （based on UDCR and EECR methods）. The observed mixture toxicity was compared with predictions by the two models, concentration addition （CA） and independent action （IA）. The toxicity of the tested mixtures showed a good agreement with those predicted by the concept of CA except four UDCR mixtures： UD10-2, UD10-4, UD10-8 and UD10-10. To examine the influence of imidacloprid in the four UDCR mixtures （UD10-2, UD10-4, UD10-8, UD10-10）, it was removed from the ten-pesticide mixtures and the remaining nine chemicals were combined at the same relative proportions based on the UDCR method （UD9-2, UD9-4, UD9-8, UD9-10）. There was not significant departure from CA for the scattered points with the nine remaining pesticides omitting imidacloprid. Thus, imidacloprid may significantly influence the other pesticides due to its properties.

Miktoarms hyperbranched polymer brushes:One-step fast synthesis by parallel click chemistry and hierarchical self-assembly

Spherical molecular brushes with amphiphilic heteroarms were facilely synthesized by grafting the arms of hydrophobic 2-azidoethyle palmitate and hydrophilic monoazide-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) onto the core of alkyne-modified hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) with high molecular weight (Mn=122 kDa) via one-pot parallel click *** parallel click grafting strategy was demonstrated to be highly efficient (～100%),very fast (～ 2 h) and well controllable to the amphilicity of molecular *** adjusting the feeding ratio of hydrophobic and hydrophilic arms,a series of brushes with different arm ratios were readily *** resulting miktoarms hyperbranched polymer brushes (HPG-g-C16/PEG350) were characterized by hydrogen-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR),Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy,gel permeation chromatography (GPC),and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) *** spherical molecular brushes showed high molecular weights up to 230 kDa,and thus could be visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM).AFM and dynamic laser light scattering (DLS) were employed to investigate the self-assembly properties of amphiphilic molecular brushes with closed proportion of hydrophobic and hydrophilic *** brushes could self-assemble hierarchically into spherical micelles,and network-like fibre structures,and again spherical micelles by addition of n-hexane into the dichloromethane or chloroform solution of *** addition,this kind of miktoarms polymer brush also showed the ability of dye loading via host-guest encapsulation,which promises the potential application of spherical molecular brushes in supramolecular chemistry.

Full-scale measurements of dynamic response of suspension bridge subjected to environmental loads using GPS technology

Nowadays, there are many larger and taller engineering structures than in the past. These structures are commonly designed to be more flexible. Thus, they are sensitive to severe wind gust and earthquake tremor. For the dynamic response prediction, finite element (FE) modal updating and structural health monitoring, the dynamic characteristics of a structure are becoming increasingly important. The aim of this paper is to show an emerging tool-the real time kinematic (RTK) global positioning system (GPS), which is used to measure and monitor the low-frequency vibration of Dalian BeiDa Bridge, a medium span suspension bridge. The modal analysis is firstly performed on the developed three-dimensional FE model according to the original blue prints of the bridge to provide the analytical frequencies and mode shapes. The field ambient vibration tests using the accelerometers on the bridge deck are conducted just prior to the use of the GPS system in order to validate the FE model. And then, the calibration test is done to assess the dynamic displacement measurement accuracy of the GPS in three orthogonal directions. The GPS signal properties, such as the amplitude, standard deviations (STD), power spectral density (PSD), and probability density functions (PDF), are studied in details. After that, a structural health monitoring system based on the GPS is devised and installed on the bridge to provide real-time measurement of deck movement. The output-only modal parameter identification is carried out by using the Periodogram method to investigate the responses of the bridge. The result shows that the spectral densities of the displacements measured by the GPS correspond well with the results by the FEM analysis and the accelerometer vibration test. It is concluded that the GPS method is reliable and useful to clarify the ambient vibration response behaviors of the flexible structures. Unconstrained Methods for Generalized Complementarity Problems

In this paper, the generalized complementarity problem is formulated as an unconstrained optimization problem. Our results generalize the results of [9]. The dimensionality of the unconstrained problem is the same as that of the original problem. If the mapping of generalized complementarity problem is differentiable, the objective function of the unconstrained problem is also differentiable. All the solutions of the original problem are global minimizers of the optimization problem. A generalized strict complementarity condition is given. Under certain assumptions, local properties of the correspondent unconstrained optimization problem are studied. Limited numerical tests are also reported.

Stability of stratified flow and slugging in horizontal gas-liquid flow

A transient one-dimensional two-fluid model is proposed to investigate numerically the interfacial instability and the onset of slugging for liquid-gas flow in a horizontal duct. In the present model, the effects of surface tension and transverse variations in dynamic pressure are taken into account. The evolution of interfacial disturbances is displayed and compared with the linear viscous Kelvin-Helmholtz stability analyses. It shows that interfacial wave is more instable due to the non-linear effect. The model predicts well the stability limit of stratified flow in comparison with the experimental data, and also automatically tracks the onset of slugging. The results show that the initiation of hydrodynamic slugging is related to local interfacial instability. Based on the cycle of slugging, a model for slug frequency is presented, which predicts the trends of slug frequencies with gas/liquid flow rate well in comparison with the available data. The effects of physical properties on slugging have been examined. It is found that with the increase in the gas viscosity and liquid density the slugging would be inhibited, whereas, with the increase in liquid viscosity and gas density, the slugging can be promoted.

Deformation reinforcement theory and its application to high arch dams

In this paper,the deformation reinforcement theory(DRT) proposed by the authors is elaborated with a new definition of instability that an elasto-plastic structure is not stable if it cannot satisfy simultaneously equilibrium condition,kinematical admissibility and constitutive equations under the prescribed *** from the definition,a proof is established to the principle of minimum plastic complementary energy for failured *** is revealed that the principle of mini-mum plastic complementary energy results in relaxed constitutive equations,especially,yield *** is demonstrated with case studies that many key issues in arch dam design,e.g.,global stability,dam-toe reinforcement,dam-toe cracking,dam-abut-ment reinforcement,can be well solved within the framework of the deformation reinforcement *** structural global stability can be described by the curve of the plastic complementary energy vs overloading *** unbalanced-forces obtained by elasto-plastic FEM can be used as the basis of analysis of global stability,dam-heel cracking,dam-toe anchorage and reinforcement of faults of high arch dams and their foundations.

DNA splice site sequences clustering method for conservativeness analysis

DNA sequences that are near to splice sites have remarkable conservativeness, and many researchers have contributed to the prediction of splice site. In order to mine the underlying biological knowledge, we analyze the conservativeness of DNA splice site adjacent sequences by clustering. Firstly, we propose a kind of DNA splice site sequences clustering method which is based on DBSCAN, and use four kinds of dissimilarity calculating methods. Then, we analyze the conservative feature of the clustering results and the experimental data set.
