Laboratory and field testing of bolting systems subjected to highly corrosive environments

The capacity of ground support components which have been affected by corrosion is reduced and may ultimately lead to dynamic failure of the component and the strata. In order to maintain an effective,long-term ground support system, significant campaigns of rehabilitation are often required in corrosion affected areas which also expose the workers to hazardous conditions. The most common corrosion protection for steel ground support utilises sacrificial systems such as galvanising. Galvanising has previously been proven to be susceptible to some corrosion processes. Stainless steel is the most effective in resistance to corrosion, but can be cost prohibitive, and its mechanical properties often make it unsuited to use in ground support components. Providing an outer protective plastic coating to bolts has proven to be an effective means of protecting the inner steel bar from corrosion. However, these support systems tend to be susceptible to coating damage, and require post cement grouting to provide full encapsulation. In comparison to a standard bolt/resin system, they can be slow to install and *** systems have also been shown to reduce overall load transfer performance of the bolting system. In order to provide a higher level of corrosion protection whilst maintaining current installation practices and bolting cycle times, Minova has developed the Enduro^(TM)steel ground support range. The Enduro^(TM) range consists of standard Minova steel ground support components which have been treated with a unique coating process. The Enduro^(TM)coating has been tested in the harshest of conditions, in laboratory controlled conditions and in underground trials. It has been proven to effectively resist or completely eliminate the formation of corrosion, even in the most aggressive environments. This paper explains the process and provides the details of the laboratory and underground corrosion performance testing carried out on Enduro^(TM)ground support product

On arrival in the Arctic, migrant birds must adjust their physiology and behavior to unpredictable snow cover, weather, food sources and predator pressure. In other words they must be resistant to environmental perturbations (stress) so that they can migrate to their tundra nesting areas and settle on territories as soon as possible. They can then begin breeding as soon as when environmental conditions become favorable. They do this partly by using micro-habitats such as areas where snow depth is low, and patches of tundra that melt out rapidly (especially near willows Salix sp). Ground temperatures increase dramatically within hours after exposure to sun; and invertebrate activity begins simultaneously. Wind speeds are attenuated almost completely within 10 cm of the ground in willows and tussock tundra. The combination of these conditions provides an ideal refuge, especially for passerine migrants in early spring. However, if conditions worsen, the birds can leave. There are adjustments of the adrenocortical responses to stress because arctic conditions in spring are potentially severe, at least compared with wintering grounds to the south. Secretion of corticosterone in response to acute stress is enhanced at arrival in males, accompanied by a decrease in sensitivity to negative feedback and a change in responsiveness of the adrenal cortex cells to adrenocorticotropin. There is also an increase in levels of corticosterone-binding globulin (cBG) so that the actions of corticosterone are buffered according to the severity of environmental conditions. Regulation at the level of genomic receptors, particularly the low affinity glucocorticosteroid-like receptor for corticosterone in brain and liver, may be important; and non-genomic actions of corticosterone may play a major role too. In other words, the hormone-behavior system associated with arrival biology is highly flexible.

Sepsis and the blood-brain barrier(BBB):Sepsis is a life threatening systemic inflammatory condition involving multi-organ *** World Health Organization estimates that about 30 million people are affected by sepsis every year,and at least 6 million people die from sepsis each *** of approximately 24 million sepsis survivors,it is estimated that 70%of these individuals will experience some form of long-term neurological impairment(Iwashyna et al.,2010).Thus,when combined with prevention,diagnosis,and therapeutic management strategies,a functional understanding of the mechanisms that promote sepsis-associated neurological impairment is necessary to address the clinical challenges and economic burdens faced when treating sepsis.

Aim: To assess the reproducibility of, and determine normative data for, flow volume measurements from the right common carotid artery (ccA) and its relation to left ventricular output (LVO) in stable term and preterm babies using Doppler ultrasound. Methods: Right ccA flow volume was measured using a near focus, hig h frequency transducer by obtaining intensity weighted mean velocity and right c cA diameter. LVO was determined using standard Doppler techniques. Reproducibili ty studies were performed on 30 newborn infants by two observers. Normative data were obtained from 40 spontaneously bre athing preterm babies and 21 term babies. Results: The intraobserver coefficient of variation for ccA flow measurements was 10.5%for observer 1 and 15.4%for o bserver 2, whereas the interobserver coefficient of variation was 16.4%. In ter m and preterm infants, right ccA flow was about 20 ml/kg/min, accounting for 11 %of cardiac output. Among the preterm infants, there was a positive correlation of right ccA flow with gestation (r = 0.61, p ccA diameter also increased with wei ght (r = 0.63, p ccA did not increase with gestation, nor did the r ight ccA flow per kg body weight. conclusions: It is possible to perform reprodu cible measurements of flow volume in the ccA of newborn infants. In stable, spon taneously breathing babies, both cardiac output and carotid flow increased with gestation and body weight. The proportion of cardiac output distributed to the r ight ccA remained relatively constant across gestation.

BAcKGROUND Several studies of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage(SIcH)patients have shown apoptotic changes in brain samples after hematoma ***,there have been no data on the association between blood concentrations of soluble fas(sFas)(the main surface death receptor of the extrinsic apoptosis pathway)and the prognosis of spontaneous intracranial hypotension(SIH)*** To determine whether there is an association between blood sFas concentrations and SIcH patient *** We included patients with severe and supratentorial *** was defined as having Glasgow coma Scaleconcentrations at the time of severe SIcH *** We found that non-surviving patients(n=36)compared to surviving patients(n=39)had higher IcH score(P=0.001),higher midline shift(P=0.004),higher serum sFas concentrations(Pcuation(P=0.04).Multiple logistic regression analysis showed an association between serum sFas concentrations and 30-d mortality(odds ratio=1.070;95%confidence interval=1.014-1.129;P=0.01)controlling for IcH score,midline shift,and early hematoma *** The association of blood sFas concentrations and SIcH patient mortality is a novel finding in our study.
