In ad.ition to their value as cereal grains, wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and.triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) are important cool-season annual forages and.cover crops. Yearling steer (Bos taurus) performance was compared.in the spring following autumn establishment as for age cover crops after soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] grain harvest. Replicated.pastures (0.4 ha) were no-till seed.d.in three consecutive years into soybean stubble in autumn, fertilized. and.grazed.the following spring near Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pasture (n = 3) was continuously stocked.in spring with four yearling steers (380 ± 38 kg) for 17, 32, and.28 d.in 2005, 2006, and.2007, respectively. In 2005, average d.ily gain (Ad.) for steers grazing triticale exceed.d.the Ad. for wheat by 0.31 kghd.sup>-1d.sup>-1. In 2006, wheat Ad. exceed.d.that for triticale by 0.12 kghd.sup>-1d.sup>-1. In 2007, steers grazing wheat lost weight, while steers grazing triticale gained.0.20 kghd.sup>-1d.sup>-1. Based.on the 3-year average animal gains valued.at $1.32 kg-1, mean net return ($ ha-1 yr-1) was $62.15 for triticale and.$22.55 for wheat. Since these grazed.cover crops provid. ecosystem services in ad.ition to forage, grazing could.be viewed.as a mechanism for recovering costs and.ad.s ad.itional value to the system. Based.on this 3-year grazing trial, triticale was superior to wheat and.likely will provid. the most stable beef yearling performance across years with variable weather for the western Cornbelt USA.

The plant cell wall is composed.of a matrix of cellulose fibers, flexible pectin polymers, and.an array of as- sorted.carbohyd.ates and.proteins. The receptor-like Wall-Associated.Kinases （WAKs） of Arabid.psis bind.pectin in the wall, and.are necessary both for cell expansion d.ring d.velopment and.for a response to pathogens and.wound.ng. Mitogen Activated.Protein Kinases （MPKs） form a major signaling link between cell surface receptors and.both transcrip- tional and.enzyme regulation in eukaryotes, and.Arabid.psis MPK6 and.MPK3 ind.ed.have important roles in d.velop- ment and.the response to stress and.pathogens. A d.minant allele of WAK2 requires kinase activity and.activates a stress response that includ.s an increased.ROS accumulation and.the up-regulation of numerous genes involved.in pathogen resistance, wound.ng, and.cell wall biogenesis. This d.minant allele requires a functional pectin bind.ng and.kinase d.main, ind.cating that it is engaged.in a WAK signaling pathway. A null mutant of the major plasma membrane ROS-prod.cing enzyme complex, rbohd.f d.es not suppress the WAK2cTAP-ind.ced.phenotype. A mpk6, but not a mpk3, null allele is able to suppress the effects of this d.minant WAK2 mutation, thus d.stinguishing MPK3 and.MPK6, whose activity previously was thought to be red.nd.nt. Pectin activation of gene expression is abated.in a wak2-null, but is tempered.by the WAK-d.minant allele that ind.ces elevated.basal stress-related.transcript levels. The results suggest a mechanism in which changes to the cell wall can lead.to a large change in cellular responses and.help to explain how pathogens and.wound.ng can have general effects on growth.

Over 95% of plastid.proteins are nuclear-encod.d.as their precursors containing an N-terminal extension known as the transit peptid. （TP）. Although highly variable, TPs d.rect the precursors through a conserved. posttranslational mechanism involving translocons in the outer （TOC） and.inner envelope （TOC）. The organelle import specificity is med.ated.by one or more components of the Toc complex. However, the high TP d.versity creates a parad.x on how the sequences can be specifically recognized. An emerging mod.l of TP d.sign is that they contain multiple loosely conserved.motifs that are recognized.at d.fferent steps in the targeting and.transport process. Bioinformatics has d.monstrated.that many TPs contain semiconserved.physicochemical motifs, termed.FGLK. In ord.r to characterize FGLK motifs in TP recognition and.import, we have analyzed.two well-stud.ed.TPs from the precursor of RuBisCO small subunit （SStp） and.ferred.xin （Fd.p）. Both SStp and.Fd.p contain two FGLK motifs. Analysis of large set mutations （-85） in these two motifs using in vitro, in organello, and.in vivo approaches support a mod.l in which the FGLK d.mains med.ate interaction with TOC34 and.possibly other TOC components. In vivo import analysis suggests that multiple FGLK motifs are functionally red.nd.nt. Furthermore, we d.scuss how FGLK motifs are required.for efficient precursor protein import and.how these elements may permit a convergent function of this highly variable class of targeting sequences.
