Neurodegeneration is a catastrophic process that develops progressive damage leading to functional andstructural loss of the cells of the nervous system and is among the biggest unavoidable problems of our *** do not reflect the pathophysiology observed in humans due to distinct differences between the neuralpathways,gene expression patterns,neuronal plasticity,and other disease-related mechanisms in animals *** in vitro cell culture models are also not sufficient for pre-clinical drug testing in reflecting thecomplex pathophysiology of neurodegenerative ***,modern,engineered techniques are applied to developmulticellular,intricate in vitro models and to create the closest microenvironment simulating biological,biochemical,and mechanical characteristics of the in vivo degenerating *** THIS review,the capabilities and shortcomings ofscaffold-based and scaffold-free techniques,organoids,and microfluidic models that best reflect neurodegeneration invitro in the biomimetic framework are discussed.

Epidemic management in a measles outbreak in 2023,the return of vaccine-preventable diseases:A single center,retrospective observational study

Objective:To investigate the importance of immunization in preventing measles infection and to determine the most useful laboratory tests for confirmation of ***:This study included pediatric cases evaluated with a presumed diagnosis of measles between December 2022 and June 2023,at Marmara University Pendik Training and Research *** effects of vaccination status and underlying disease on the clinical course,treatments,and complications were ***:In total,117 patients were enrolled in the study with a median age of 80 months(IQR:32.5-125.0).Twelve patients with contact history were asymptomatic and had an underlying disorder,and intravenous immunoglobulin was given to them for post-exposure ***-one patients had confirmed measles *** treatment was given to three patients(a newborn,a girl with rhabdomyosarcoma,and a healthy boy)with respiratory ***-eight percent of confirmed measles cases were unvaccinated,and all hospitalized cases were unvaccinated or *** full-vaccinated children had confirmed measles *** PCR from nasopharyngeal swabs was negative in all of them,and their diagnosis was established with anti-measles IgM ***:The measles vaccine is the most effective way to protect from measles and measles-related *** measles can also occur in fully vaccinated patients,the disease is milder than in unvaccinated *** ELISA and RT-PCR tests together may be beneficial in patients with high clinical suspicion for early diagnosis.

COVID-19 vaccination and associated factors in Turkish healthcare workers practicing chest medicine

Objective: To evaluate the COVID-19 vaccination status and related characteristics of Turkish healthcare workers practicing chest ***: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among the Turkish Thoracic Society members. The survey was started on May 17, 2021, and kept open for seven weeks. The 39-item survey included the COVID-19 vaccination status and demographic, clinical, and occupational characteristics. Results: Of 378 healthcare workers participated in the survey, 354(93.7%) reported receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 323(91.2%) healthcare workers received CoronaVac vs. BioNTech/Pfizer in 31(8.8%). In the CoronaVac group, 77(23.8%) contracted COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, and 13(4.0%) when fully vaccinated;however, 16(51.6%) healthcare workers in the BioNTech/Pfizer group got COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, but any fully vaccinated participants did not contract COVID-19(P=0.003). Regarding vaccine dosing, 328(86.8%) were fully vaccinated, while 50(13.2%) were not. Multiple regression analysis for being a non-fully vaccinated healthcare worker demonstrated a significant relationship with having any SARS-CoV-2 infection history(adjusted OR 9.57, 95% CI 3.93-23.26, P<0.001) and being a non-physician healthcare worker(adjusted OR 5.86, 95% CI 2.11-16.26, P=0.001), but a significant negative relationship with full-time working at the time of survey(adjusted OR 0.13, 95% CI 0.03-0.56, P=0.006). Conclusions: Although a majority of healthcare workers were fully vaccinated, occupational and non-occupational characteristics were related to being non-fully vaccinated. Active surveillance regarding the COVID-19 vaccination in healthcare workers is necessary to address specific parameters as barriers to vaccination.

Effects of obstructive sleep apnea on retinal microvasculature

AIM:To detect retinal microvascular variations in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome ***:This prospective,observational case-control study included healthy controls and patients with mild,moderate,and severe obstructive sleep apnea *** parameters,foveal avascular area,and flow areas in macula-centered,6.00×6.00 mm2 scan size optical coherence tomography angiography images were ***:The control group had the highest whole image,parafoveal,and perifoveal vessel density among the groups in both superficial and the deep capillary plexus(all P<0.05).Rapid eye movement sleep apnoea-hypopnoea index was reversely correlated with whole(Rho=-0.195,P=0.034),parafoveal(Rho=-0.242,P=0.008),perifoveal(Rho=-0.187,P=0.045)vessel density in the superficial capillary plexus,and whole(Rho=-0.186,P=0.046),parafoveal(Rho=-0.260,P=0.004),perifoveal(Rho=-0.189,P=0.043)vessel density in the deep capillary plexus,though the mean and non-rapid eye movement sleep apnoeahypopnoea index related with only parafoveal vessel density in the superficial capillary plexus(Rho=-0.213,P=0.020;Rho=-0.191,P=0.038)and the deep capillary plexus(Rho=-0.254,P=0.005;Rho=-0.194,P=0.035).CONCLUSION:This study shows decreased vessel density and its reverse correlation with the apnoea-hypopnoea index in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Effect of glutathione on brain nitric oxide levels in an experimental epilepsy mouse model

BACKGROUND： Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Glutathione, known as one of the compounds of antioxidant defense, has been shown to inhibit convulsions. Nitric oxide has a proconvulsant effect on a pentylenetetrazole-induced animal model. OBJECTIVE： To evaluate the effects of glutathione administration on nitric oxide levels in brain regions of convulsive and kindling pentylenetetrazole-induced seizure models. DESIGN, TIME, AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled, animal experiment. The study was performed at the Department of Physiology, Gaziantep University and Department of Chemistry-Biochemistry,Kahramamaras Sutcu Imam University in 2006. MATERIALS： Pentylenetetrazole and glutathione were purchased from Sigma, USA. METHODS： A total of 80 mice were assigned to 8 groups （n = 10）： normal control, saline control （1 mL normal saline）, convulsive pentylenetetrazole （single intraperitoneal administration of pentylenetetrazole, 60 mg/kg）, convulsive pentylenetrazole plus glutathione （single administration of 60 mg/kg pentylenetetrazole and 200 mg/kg glutathione）, five-dose glutathione （intraperitoneal injection of 200 mg/kg glutathione respectively at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days）, single-dose glutathione （single administration of 200 mg/kg glutathione）, pentylenetetrazole kindling （intraperitoneal administration of pentylenetetrazole of 40 mg/kg at 1,3, 5, 7, and 10 days）, and pentylenetetrazole kindling plus glutathione group （intraperitoneal injection of 40 mg/kg pentylenetetrazole and 200 mg/kg glutathione respectively at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days）. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： All mice were sacrificed 1 hour after the last administration. Brain nitric oxide levels were determined by spectrophotometry. Ocular disorders in children with spastic subtype of cerebral palsy

AIM: To document common ocular abnormalities in children with spastic subtype of cerebral palsy (CP) and to find out whether any correlation exists between their occurance and etiologic ***: Totally 194 patients with the diagnosis of spastic type CP were enrolled in this retrospective study. Detailed ophthalmic examinations were performed. Demographic data and neuroradiological findings were documented. Kruskal-Wallis, Mann Whitney U, Pearson Chi-square tests and Student’s t tests were used in the statistical ***: The mean age was 64.7±44.2 months on the first ophthalmic examination. Prevalences of diplegia (47.4%) and tetraplegia (36.1%) were found to be higher than the frequency of hemiplegia (16.5% ) in our study population. Etiologic factor was asphyxia in 60.8% of the patients. Abnormal ocular findings were present in 78.9% of the patients. Statistically significant poor vision was detected in tetraplegia group among all the spastic ubtypes of CP (P =0.000). Anisometropia and significant refractive error were found in 14.4% and 70.1% of the patients, respectively. Thirty-six children (18.6% ) had nystagmus and 107 children (55.2% ) had strabismus. Lower gestational age and birth weight were statistically higher in patients with esotropia than exotropia (P=0.009 and P =0.024, respectively). Abnormal morphology of the optic disc was present in 152 eyes (39.2% ). Severe periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) was found in 48 patients and statistically significant poor vision was detected in the presence of PVL (P =0.000).CONCLUSION:Spastic diplegic or tetraplegic CP patients with positive neuroradiological symptoms, younger gestational age and lower birth weight ought to have detailed ophthalmic examinations as early as possible to provide best visual rehabilitation.·

Long-term success of ahmed glaucoma valve in refractory glaucoma

AIM:To evaluate the long-term results and complications of ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation in refractory glaucoma.· METHODS:A retrospective review of 13 patients (13 eyes) with refractory glaucoma who underwent AGV implantation and had a minimum follow-up of 18 months was *** patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement before surgery and at 1 month,3 months,6 months,1 year after surgery and yearly *** and the number of antiglaucoma medications needed were recorded.· RESULTS:Mean age was 27.3±16.0 *** eyes (100%) had at least one prior incisional *** follow-up was 61.3±30.8 *** was reduced from a mean of 35.0±7.0mmHg to 18.2±7.9mmHg at 12 months and to 17.0±4.1mmHg at 96 months (P <0.05) with a lower number of medications from baseline,76.9% patients required additional procedures to achieve the success criteria set by previously published *** most common complications were encapculated cyst formation in eight eyes (61.5%) and tube exposure in four eyes (30.8%).· CONCLUSION:Encapsulated cyst formation was the most common complication which hindered succesful IOP control after AGV implant insertion for refractory *** cyst excision with anti-fibrotic agents,successful IOP reduction was not achieved in 76.9% of the patients without antiglaucoma medication.
