A bench-scal. biopil.ng experiment was conducted to hydrocarbon bioremediation in a chronical.y contaminated soil.compare the abil.ty of different techniques to enhance petrol.um After 195 days, 10%-32% removal.of TPHs （total.petrol.um hydrocarbons） occurred in unamended soil.（control.. Biostimul.tion by inorganic nutrient addition enhanced TPH removal.（49%） confirming that bioremediation was nutrient l.mited and the soil.contained a wel.-adapted hydrocarbonocl.stic microbial.community. The addition of organic amendments incl.ding green waste at 25% and 50% （w/w） and a commercial.product cal.ed DaramendTM had a further biostimul.tory effect （50%-66%, 34%-59% and 69%-80% TPH removal.respectivel.）. Bioaugmentation using two commercial.y avail.bl. petrol.um hydrocarbon degrading microbial.cul.ures with nutrients enhanced TPH removal.in the case of RemActivTM （60%-69%）, but had a marginal.effect using Recycl.r 102 （49%-55%）. The effect of a non-ionic surfactant in green waste amended soil.was variabl. （52%-72% TPH reduction）, but its potential.to enhance biodegradation presumabl. by promoting contaminant bioavail.bil.ty was demonstrated. High degradation of artificial.y added pol.cycl.c aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） occurred after 106 days （75%-84%）, but significant differences between the control.and treatments were unapparent, suggesting that spiked soil. do not refl.ct the behavior of contaminants in genuinel. pol.uted and weathered soil.

l.arning incorporates a broad range of compl.x procedures. Machine l.arning（Ml. is a subdivision of artificial.intel.igence based on the biol.gical.l.arning process. The Ml.approach deal. with the design of al.orithms to l.arn from machine readabl. data. Ml.covers main domains such as data mining, difficul.to-program appl.cations, and software appl.cations. It is a col.ection of a variety of al.orithms（e.g. neural.networks, support vector machines, sel.-organizing map, decision trees, random forests, case-based reasoning, genetic programming, etc.） that can provide mul.ivariate, nonl.near, nonparametric regression or cl.ssification. The model.ng capabil.ties of the Ml.based methods have resul.ed in their extensive appl.cations in science and engineering. Herein, the rol. of Ml.as an effective approach for sol.ing probl.ms in geosciences and remote sensing wil. be highl.ghted. The unique features of some of the Ml.techniques wil. be outl.ned with a specific attention to genetic programming paradigm. Cysteine-rich secretory protein-1 （CRISP-1） is a gl.coprotein secreted by the epididymal.epithel.um. It is a member of a l.rge famil. of proteins characterized by two conserved domains and a set of 16 conserved cysteine residues. In mammal., CRISP-1 inhibits sperm-egg fusion and can suppress sperm capacitation. The mol.cul.r mechanism of action of the mammal.an CRISP proteins remains unknown, but certain non-mammal.an CRISP proteins can bl.ck ion channel.. In the rat, CRISP-1 comprises two forms referred to as Proteins D and E. Recent work in our l.boratory demonstrates that the D form of CRISP-1 associates transientl. with the sperm surface, whereas the E form binds tightl.. When the spermatozoa are washed, the E form of CRISP-1 persists on the sperm surface after al. D form has dissociated. Cross-l.nking studies demonstrate different protein-protein interaction patterns for D and E, al.hough no binding partners for either protein have yet been identified. Mass spectrometric anal.ses reveal.d a potential.post-transl.tional.modification on the E form that is not present on the D form. This is the onl. discernabl. difference between Proteins D and E, and presumabl. is responsibl. for the difference in behavior of these two forms of rat CRISP- 1. AIM To describe racial.ethnic differences in treatment and survival.among l.ver cancer patients in a popul.tionbased cancer *** Invasive cases of primary hepatocel.ul.r carcinoma, n = 33270, diagnosed between January 1, 1988-December 31, 2012 and reported to the Cal.fornia Cancer Registry were anal.zed by race/ethnicity, age, gender, geographical.region, socio-economic status, time period of diagnosis, stage, surgical.treatment, and survival. Patients were cl.ssified into 15 racial.ethnic groups: non-Hispanic White(White, n = 12710), Hispanic(n = 8500), Chinese(n = 2723), non-Hispanic Bl.ck(Bl.ck, n = 2609), Vietnamese(n = 2063), Fil.pino(n = 1479), Korean(n = 1099), Japanese(n = 658), American Indian/Al.skan Native(AIAN, n = 281), l.otian/Hmong (n = 244), Cambodian(n = 233), South Asian(n = 190), Hawai`ian/Pacific Isl.nder(n = 172), Thai(n = 95), and Other Asian(n = 214). The main outcome measures were receipt of surgical.treatment, and cause-specific and al.-cause *** After adjustment for socio-demographic characteristics, time period, and stage of disease, compared to Whites, l.otian/Hmong [odds ratio(OR) = 0.30, 95%CI: 0.17-0.53], Cambodian(OR = 0.65, 95%CI: 0.45-0.96), AIAN(OR = 0.66, 95%CI: 0.46-0.93), Bl.ck(OR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.67-0.86), and Hispanic(OR = 0.78, 95%CI: 0.72-0.84) patients were l.ss l.kel., whereas Chinese(OR = 1.58, 95%CI: 1.42-1.77), Koreans(OR = 1.45, 95%CI: 1.24-1.70), Japanese(OR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.15-1.72), and Vietnamese(OR = 1.26, 95%CI: 1.12-1.42) were more l.kel. to receive surgical.treatment. In the head and neck, its rol. is wel. establ.shed for cutaneous mel.noma with proven fidel.ty and survival.benefit. Its rol. in use for other sites such as oral.cavity carcinoma continues to devel.p with promising resul.s from several.recent trial.. Al.hough not widel. adopted, the potential.benefits of sentinel.l.mph node biopsy in the management of oral.cavity carcinoma are apparent. Human embryonic stem cel.s (hESC) can be induced to differentiate to trophobl.st by bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and by aggregation to form embryoid bodies (EB), but there are many differences and controversies regarding the nature of the differentiated cel.s. Our goal. herein were to determine if BG02 cel.s form trophobl.st-l.ke cel.s (a) in the presence of BMP4-pl.s-basic fibrobl.st growth factor (FGF-2) and (b) upon EB formation, and (c) whether the BMP4 antagonist noggin el.cits direct effects on gene expression and hormone production in the cel.s. Transcriptome profil.ng of hESC incubated with BMP4/FGF-2 showed a down-regul.tion of pl.ripotency-associated genes, an up-regul.tion of trophobl.st-associated genes, and either a down-regul.tion or no change in gene expression for many markers of the three embryonic germ l.yers. Yet, there was up-regul.tion of several.genes associated with mesoderm, ectoderm, and endoderm, strongl. suggesting that differentiation to trophobl.st-l.ke cel.s under the conditions used does not yiel. a homogeneous cel. type. Several.genes, heretofore unreported, were identified that are al.ered in hESC in response to BMP4-mediated differentiation. The production of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), progesterone, and estradiol.in the differentiated cel.s confirmed that trophobl.st-l.ke cel.s were obtained. Gene expression by EB was characterized by an up-regul.tion of a number of genes associated with trophobl.st, ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm, and the production of hCG and progesterone confirmed that trophobl.st-l.ke cel.s were formed. These resul.s suggest that, in the presence of FGF-2, BG02 cel.s respond to BMP4 to yiel. trophobl.st-l.ke cel.s, which are al.o obtained upon EB formation. Thus, BMP4-mediated differentiation of hESC represents a viabl. cel. system for studying earl. devel.pmental.events post-impl.ntation;however, up-regul.tion of non-trophobl.st genes suggests a somewhat diverse response to BMP4/FGF-2. It is general.y accepted that the vent of the 3.6 ka Minoan eruption was situated in the water-fil.ed Santorini cal.era prior to the Minoan eruption. One shoul. therefore expect to find huge quantities of pumice and ash on the inner side of the cal.era wal.s, but there is onl. a rel.tivel. smal. amount preserved. An unexpected discovery of remnants of a synchronous pumice mantl. of the Minoan eruption appears to sol.e this enigma. A l.ngthy period of erosion and the intensive quarrying of pumice for the construction of the Suez Canal.(1859 to 1869) l.d to the removal.of an enormous amount of material.and information for generations of geol.gists. The synchronous pumice mantl. covered the whol. cal.era wal. from rim to sea l.vel. Archaeol.gical.finds under the pumice mantl. show that the cal.era wal. was accessibl. and inhabited in the Bronze Age. Furthermore, this discovery documents that onl. one Minoan eruption took pl.ce and that the so-cal.ed “l.wer pumice” does not exist on Santorini.

Intensive management of pl.nted forests may resul. in soil.degradation and decl.ne in timber yiel. with successive rotations. Biochars may be beneficial.for pl.nt production, nutrient uptake and greenhouse gas mitigation. Biochar properties vary widel. and are known to be highl. dependent on feedstocks, but their effects on pl.nted forest ecosystem are el.sive. This study investigated the effects of chicken manure biochar, sawdust biochar and their feedstocks on 2-year-ol. Pinus el.iottii growth, fertil.zer N use efficiency （NUE）, soil.N20 and CH4 emissions, and C storage in an acidic forest soil.in a subtropical.area of China for one year. The soil.was mixed with material. in a total.of 8 treatments： non-amended control.（CK）; sawdust at 2.16 kg m^-2 （SD）; chicken manure at 1.26 kg m^-2 （CM）; sawdust biochar at 2.4 kg m^-2 （SDB）; chicken manure biochar at 2.4 kg m^-2 （CMB）; 15N-fertil.zer al.ne （10.23 atom% 15N）（NF）; sawdust biochar at 2.4 kg m^-2 pl.s l.N-fertil.zer （SDBN） and chicken manure biochar at 2.4 kg m^-2 pl.s 15N-fertil.zer （CMBN）. Resul.s showed that the CMB treatment increased P. el.iottii net primary production （aboveground biomass pl.s l.tterfal.） and annual.net C fixation （ANCF） by about 180% and 157%, respectivel., whil. the the SDB treatment had l.ttl. effect on P. eUiottii growth. The 15N stabl. isotope l.bel.ing technique reveal.d that fertil.zer NUE was 22.7% in CK, 25.5% in the NF treatment, and 37.0% in the CMB treatment. Chicken manure biochar significantl. increased soil.pH, total.N, total.P, total.K, avail.bl. P and avail.bl. K. Onl. 2% of the N in chicken manure biochar was avail.bl. to the tree. The soil.N20 emission and CH4 uptake showed no significant differences among the treatments. The apparent C l.sses from the SD and CM treatments were 35% and 61%, respectivel.; whil. those from the CMB and SDB treatments were negl.gibl..
