Depression is a major health problem, especially for elderly people. According to the “homocysteine hypothesis of depression”, high homocysteine levels may cause depression of mood via cerebrovascular diseases. Whilst biologically plausible, such hypothesis needs yet confirmation. We aimed at: 1) studying the relationships between homocysteinemia (HCY) and depression in a community-dwelling cohort of people aged 70 to 75 years at baseline;2) investigating plasma levels of HCY and 3) comparing these levels between males and females, in the same population. We exploited the data from four waves (2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018) of the longitudinal study “InveCeAb”, with specific regard towards mood assessment, by Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) scoring, and diagnosis of clinically relevant or subthreshold depression. HCY plasma levels were measured in the waves 2012, 2014 and 2018. Sample attrition was due mainly to death or overall worsening. No statistically significant differences were found in plasma homocysteine levels in each wave, according to depressive symptoms. No correlations were found between plasma HCY levels in each wave with their corresponding GDS scores, even after adjustment for folate and cobalamin blood concentrations. Dichotomized levels of HCY (≤15 vs >15 μM/l) were not associated with dichotomized GDS scores (≤4 vs higher), clinically relevant and subthreshold depression diagnosis and any antidepressive use, in any wave. First (2012) HCY levels increased with participants’ increasing age, cross-sectionally. Listwise HCY concentrations decreased along the 3 waves. HCY levels were always higher in males than in females. Our results may challenge the “homocysteine hypothesis” of depression, whilst supporting the role of high homocysteinemia as a marker of overall bad health.

The stability of nanofluids is critical in engineering applications. The sedimentation of the nanoparticles in the base fluid limits the stability of the nanofluid. By measuring the absorbance of a visible laser through water aluminum oxide nanofluids it is possible to observe the evolution of the sedimentation process. A simple experimental setup consisting of a thin closed test cavity（0.8 mm or 1.5 mm thickness）filled with nanofluid and a set of laser diodes-photodiodes pairs was used in the experiments to determine the absorbance and the local volumetric concentration. The evolution of the local volumetric concentration of the nanofluid was measured at 13 height positions along the test cavity. Five initial volumetric concentrations of aluminum oxide（Al2O3; 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 3.0% and 4.0%） were considered. Data and digital photos were acquired for a total time lapse of 260 days. The results were independent of the container thickness. The same general trend was consistent for all the initial volumetric concentrations, i.e., the sedimentation rate decreases in time. The time evolution of the volumetric concentration was compared with results from a modified Mason-Weaver model. The comparison was possible by setting a variable sedimentation velocity in the model, suggesting that the sedimentation is affected by the dynamics of nanoparticle clusters with diverse sizes produced by agglomeration.

Since their first description in the brains of patients suffering from Alzheimer ’s disease(AD), more than 100 years ago, extracellular amyloid-β(Aβ) plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles have been the principal focus of AD research. The aim of this study was to assess whether selection breeding in chicory(Cichorium intybus L.)led changes in the susceptibility to Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli contamination and whether the anatomical traits of the leaves are involved in the possible *** chicory genotypes subjected to different intensities of selection were compared at the microgreen *** retention was evaluated after leaf incubation for 1.5 h on the surface of the bacterial suspension,followed by rinsing,grinding,plating on selective media,and colony forming unit(CFU)*** density of stomata and trichomes,total stomatal length and width,stomatal pit width,surface roughness and sharpness were *** intensively selected genotype(Witloof)was significantly more prone to contamination(2.9±0.3 lg CFU/cm^(2))as the average of the two bacterial types than the wild accession(Wild;2.3±0.4 lg CFU/cm^(2))and the moderately selected genotypes(two leaf chicories,Catalogna type,and root chicory'Magdeburg';on average,1.9±0.3 lg CFU/cm^(2)).Witloof microgreens also showed larger stomata(on average+34%for stoma width and+44%for pit width),which could justify,at least in part,the higher susceptibility to enterobacterial *** fact,when contamination was performed in the dark(closed stomata),the bacterial retention in Witloof was significantly reduced in comparison with the opened stomata(-44%)and in Wild(-26%).Differences in retention between Witloof and Wild were still observed after UV *** hierarchical clustering performed by grouping the leaf anatomical features was consistent with the chicory genetic *** results suggest that the domestication process can affect the safety of produce and that the micromorphological traits of the leaves may be involved.
