Adaptation of forest management to climate change as perceived by forest owners and managers in Belgium

Background： Climate change is likely to cause significant modifications in forests. Rising to this challenge may require adaptation of forest management, and therefore should trigger proactive measures by forest managers, but it is unclear to what extent this is already happening. Methods： The survey carried out in this research assesses how forest stakeholders in Belgium perceive the role of their forest management in the context of climate change and the impediments that limit their ability to prepare and respond to these changes. Results： Respondents indicated strong awareness of the changing climate, with more than two-thirds （71%） expressing concern about the impacts of climate change on their forests. However, less than one-third of the respondents （32 %） reported modifying their management practices motivated by climate change. Among the major constraints limiting their climate red,ted ~ctions, lack of ic^formation was considered the most important for managers of both public and private forests. Conclusions： Knowledge transfer is an essential condition for research to lead to innovation. Improving the communication and demonstration of possible solutions for climate change adaptation is therefore likely to be the most effective strategy for increasing their adoption.

Application of machine learning technique for predicting and evaluating chloride ingress in concrete

The degradation of concrete structure in the marine environment is often related to chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement ***,the chloride concentration in concrete is a vital parameter for estimating the corrosion level of reinforcement *** research aims at predicting the chloride content in concrete using three hybrid models of gradient boosting(GB),artificial neural network(ann),and random forest(RF)in combination with particle swarm optimization(PSO).The input variables for modeling include exposure condition,water/binder ratio(W/B),cement content,silica fume,time exposure,and depth of *** results indicate that three models performed well with high accuracy of prediction(R2⩾0.90).Among three hybrid models,the model using GB_PSO achieved the highest prediction accuracy(R2=0.9551,RMSE=0.0327,and MAE=0.0181).Based on the results of sensitivity analysis using SHapley Additive exPlanation(SHAP)and partial dependence plots 1D(PDP-1D),it was found that the exposure condition and depth of measurement were the two most vital variables affecting the prediction of chloride *** the number of different exposure conditions is larger than two,the exposure significantly impacted the chloride content of concrete because the chloride ion ingress is affected by both chemical and physical *** study provides an insight into the evaluation and prediction of the chloride content of concrete in the marine environment.

Several gentamicin bulk samples from different origins were investigated using an LC/MS *** equipped with ion trap MS with positive ionization was performed on a Capcell Pak C18(AQ) column with the mobile phase containing 50 mM trifluoroacetic(TFA) and *** present in batches of gentamicin bulk samples were elucidated and compared according to their fragmentation *** total seventeen impurities present in samples,five impurities were not elucidated and two compounds were identified *** was observed that the impurity profiles were different in samples from different origins which indicate necessity in the quality control of gentamicin.

The Huang-Huai-Hai Plain is the most important winter wheat and maize production region in *** response to the increasing population pressure,the Chinese authorities strongly invested in improving the irrigation systems and increasing ground and surface water exploitation within the plain to increase the crop *** resulted in a reduction of water resource availability and in turn indirectly affected the suitability of various agricultural ecosystems in the *** main purpose of this study was to review the suitability of temperature and precipitation for the winter wheat and summer maize cropping system in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain,in order to provide a preliminary irrigation *** analysis provides a first attempt to enhance the water resource management as well as to increase the water use *** this aim,a GIS-based multicriteria analysis procedure has been developed consisting of（1） definition of objectives（evaluated entities） and database building;（2） definition of evaluation criteria;（3） standardization of the criteria;（4） combination of the criteria;（5） classification of the objectives;and（6） integration of the *** land suitability classification maps were transformed into maps of required irrigation amounts for each growing stage of the winter wheat and summer maize cropping *** study also exemplified the limitations and proposed future research activities that will improve the detail and accuracy of the evaluation results.

Regeneration of dendritic cells in aged mice

Age-related thymic involution causes a decreased output of thymocytes from the thymus, thereby resulting in impairment of T cell-mediated immunity. While alterations in the T cell and non-haematopoietic stromal compartments have been described, the effects of thymic involution on thymic dendritic cells （DC） are not clearly known. Thymic DC play an essential role in shaping T cell-mediated immune responses by deleting self-reactive thymocytes to establish central tolerance and by inducing regulatory T-cell （Treg） development. It is therefore important to assess the prevalence of and alterations to thymic DC with age, as this may impact on their function. We assessed the numbers and proportions of the three distinct subsets of thymic DC in ageing mice, and showed that these subsets are differentially regulated. This is expected as thymic DC subsets have different origins of development. We further assessed the responses of thymic DC in a regenerative environment, such as that induced by sex-steroid ablation （SSA）, and clearly showed that, consistent with global thymus regrowth, all three DC populations increased in numbers and regained their relative proportions to thymocytes after an initial lag period. These findings are important for the clinical translation of thymic regenerative approaches, and indicate that SSA facilitates the maintenance of critical processes such as negative selection and Treg induction through promoting thymic DC regeneration.

Impact of enclosure management on soil properties and microbial biomass in a restored semi-arid rangeland, Kenya

Rangeland degradation is a serious problem throughout sub-Saharan Africa and its restoration is a challenge for the management of arid and semi-arid areas. In Lake Baringo Basin of Kenya, communities and individual farmers are restoring indigenous vegetation inside enclosures in an effort to combat severe land degradation and address their livelihood problems. This study evaluated the impact of enclosure management on soil properties and microbial biomass, being key indicators of soil ecosystem health. Six reseeded communal enclosures using soil embankments as water-harvesting structures and strictly regulated access were selected, varying in age from 13 to 23 years. In six private enclosures, ranging from 3 to 17 years in age, individual farmers emulated the communal enclosure strategy and restored areas for their exclusive use. Significant decreases in bulk density, and increases in the soil organic carbon, total nitrogen and microbial biomass contents and stocks were found in the enclosures as compared with the degraded open rangeland. In the private enclosures, the impact of rehabilitation on the soil quality was variable, and soil quality was in general lower than that obtained under communal management. The significant increase of absolute stocks of carbon, nitrogen and microbial biomass compared to the degraded open rangeland indicates the potential for the restoration of soil quality through range rehabilitation. Over-sowing with indigenous legume fodder species could improve total nitrogen content in the soil and nutritional value of the pastures as well.

以变铅青链霉菌为宿主研究了人TNFβ(hTNFβ)的异源表达。应用链霉菌S .venezuelaeCBS76 2 70分泌产生的枯草杆菌蛋白酶抑制剂vsi基因的启动子、表达调控序列和分泌信号肽序列 ,分别对hTNFβ进行了直接分泌表达、分泌融合表达和胞内表达。将hTNFβ的cDNA分别直接融合于vsi信号肽序列下游 2个氨基酸处、vsi全长基因之后以及vsi起始密码子ATG的下游 ,获得的表达盒分别克隆至链霉菌高拷贝质粒pIJ486 ,转化StreptomyceslividansTK2 4,获得了重组菌株S .lividans(pIJ486 hTNFβ)、S .lividans(pIJ486 vsi hTNFβ)和S .lividans(pIVPA hTNFβ)。分别对不同的重组菌株进行摇瓶培养 ,对其培养的上清液和细胞裂解液进行SDS PAGE和Western杂交 ,结果表明 :hTNFβ在重组菌株中均获得了表达 ,且直接分泌产物和胞内表达产物均具有生物学活性。hTNFβ直接分泌表达产物的分子量约为 16kDa,NB培养基中培养 48h时表达水平约为 0 7mg L。胞内表达产物分子量与对照重组hTNFβ一致(18 7kDa) ,但随培养时间的延长逐步降解为 16kDa ,NB培养基中培养 48h时的表达水平 (2 5 1mg L)远高于其直接分泌表达水平。

Most geotechnical stability research is linked to“active”failures,in which soil instability occurs due to soil self-weight and external surcharge *** contrast,research on passive failure is not common,as it is predominately caused by external loads that act against the soil *** earlier active trapdoor stability investigation using the Terzaghi’s three stability factor approach was shown to be a feasible method for evaluating cohesive-frictional soil ***,this technical note aims to expand“active”trapdoor research to assess drained circular trapdoor passive stability(blowout condition)in cohesive-frictional soil under axisymmetric *** numerical finite element limit analysis(FELA)simulations,soil cohesion,surcharge,and soil unit weight effects are considered using three stability factors(Fc,Fs,and Fγ),which are all associated with the cover-depth ratio and soil internal friction *** upper-bound(UB)and lower-bound(LB)results are presented in design charts and tables,and the large dataset is further studied using an artificial neural network(ann)as a predictive model to produce accurate design *** proposed passive trapdoor problem under axisymmetric conditions is significant when considering soil blowout stability owing to faulty underground storage tanks or pipelines with high internal pressures.
