We describe a simple one-pot thermal decomposition method for the production of a stable colloidal suspension of narrowly dispersed superparamagnetic Fe_(3)O_(4)-Ag core-shell *** biocompatible nanostructures are highly toxic to *** activ.ty studies were carried out on both Gram negativ.(Escherichia coli and Proteus v.lgaris)and Gram positiv.(Bacillus megaterium and Staphylococcus aureus)bacterial *** hav. been made to understand the underlying molecular mechanism of such antibacterial *** effect of the core-shell nanostructures on Gram negativ. strains was found to be better than that observ.d for silv.r *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)v.lues of these nanostructures were found to be considerably lower than those of commercially av.ilable *** attribute this enhanced antibacterial effect of the nanostructures to their stability as a colloid in the medium,which modulates the phosphotyrosine profile of the bacterial proteins and arrests bacterial *** also demonstrate that these core-shell nanostructures can be remov.d from the medium by means of an external magnetic field which prov.des a mechanism to prev.nt uncontrolled waste disposal of these potentially hazardous nanostructures.

Objectiv.: To inv.stigate the molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) among healthcare workers and ***: MRSA isolates were recov.red from nasal swabs collected at a tertiary care hospital of Nepal and confirmed on the basis of Gram staining, conv.ntional biochemical tests, and PCR amplification of mec A gene. PCRs were also used for detection of the different resistance genes and staphylococcal cassette chromosome(SCC) mec *** susceptibility patterns of isolates were assessed by disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by ***: A total of 29 MRSA were isolated from 536 nasal swabs(5.4%) of health care workers and patients at a tertiary care hospital in Nepal. All isolates were susceptible to amikacin, gentamicin, v.ncomycin(minimal inhibitory concentrations v.l mupirocin resistance(minimal inhibitory concentrations > 1 024 mg/m L).Fourteen isolates were found harboring the mup A gene and one isolate was found carrying the nov.l mup B gene. High prev.lence(68%) of SCCmec I type was found, followed by SCCmec v.13%) and SCCmec III(3%) among all the MRSA ***: We found the emergence of SCCmec type I with high-lev.l mupirocin resistance among MRSA in Nepal. Data also suggest that MRSA SCCmec type v.strain has spread from the community to the hospital.

AIM: Sargassum wightii Grev.lle is a marine brown alga belonging to the Sargassaceae family which has about 200 species. The ethanolic extract of the whole dry plant powder contained numerous phytoconstituents, including flav.noids. The study was focused on the anticancer activ.ty of Sargassum wightii in mice. METHOD: The ethanolic extract of Sargassum wightii(EESW) at two dose lev.ls was used to examine the anticancer activ.ty in mice using DAL cell lines to induce cancer. The body weight, v.able and non-v.able tumor cell count, mean surv.v.l time, increase in life span, and hematological parameters were observ.d for anticancer activ.ty of EESW. RESULTS: The intraperitoneal inoculation of DAL cells in mice significantly increased cancer cell count. The decrease in the cancer cell number observ.d in the EESW-treated group cancer animals indicates that the test drug has a significant inhibitory effect on the tumor cell proliferation. Treatment with EESW also showed a significant decrease in tumor weight, and hence increased the lifespan of DAL-treated mice. In addition, EESW administration significantly restored the hematological parameters in DAL-treated mice. CONCLUSION: The present study results suggest that administration of extract offers enhanced antioxidant potential. Therefore it can be concluded from this study that EESW possesses anticancer activ.ty.

AIM： To examine the sensory and motor response（s） of the stomach following fundic distention and to assess whether cholinergic mechanisms influence these responses. METHODS： Fundic tone, gastric sensory responses and antral motility were ev.luated in eight healthy v.lunteers after a probe with two sensors was placed in the antrum and a highly compliant balloon in the fundus. Isobaric balloon distentions were performed with a barostat. Study was repeated in six v.lunteers after intrav.nous atropine was giv.n. RESULTS： Fundic antral contractions curv. was higher First sensation distention induced large amplitude in all subjects. The area under the （P〈0.05） during fundic distention. was reported at 12±4 mmHg, moderate sensation at 18±4 mmHg and discomfort at 21±4 mmHg. Discomfort was associated with a decrease in antral motility. After atropine was giv.n, the area under the curv. of pressure wav.s and fundic tone decreased （P〈0.05）. Sensory thresholds were not affected. CONCLUSIONS： Fundic balloon distention induces an antral motor response, the fundo-antral reflex, which in part may be mediated by cholinergic mechanisms.
