AIM: To verify the impairment of the hepatic lipid metabolism in prehepatic portal hypertension. METHODS: The concentrations of free fatty acids, diacylglycerol, triglycerides, and phospholipids were assayed by using D-[U-14C] glucose incorporation in the different lipid fractions and thin-layer chromatography and cholesterol was measured by spectrophotometry, in liver samples of Wistar rats with partial portal vein ligation at short- (1 mo) and long-term (1 year) (i.e. portal hypertensive rats) and the control rats. RESULTS: In the portal hypertensive rats, liver phospholipid synthesis significantly decreased (7.42 ± 0.50 vs 4.70 ± 0.44 nCi/g protein; P < 0.01) and was associated with an increased synthesis of free fatty acids (2.08 ± 0.14 vs 3.36 ± 0.33 nCi/g protein; P < 0.05), diacylglycerol (1.93 ± 0.2 vs 2.26 ± 0.28 nCi/g protein), triglycerides (2.40 ± 0.30 vs 4.49 ± 0.15 nCi/g protein) and cholesterol (24.28 ± 2.12 vs 57.66 ± 3.26 mg/g protein; P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Prehepatic portal hypertension in rats impairs the liver lipid metabolism. This impairment consists in an increase in lipid deposits (triglycerides,diacylglycerol and cholesterol) in the liver, accompanied by a decrease in phospholipid synthesis.

Prehepatic portal hypertension induces a splanchnic low-grade inflammatory response that could switch to high-grade inflammation with the development of severe and life-threatening complications when associated with chronic liver disease. The extraembryonic origin of the portal system maybe determines the regression to an extraembryonic phenotype, i.e., vitellogenic and amniotic, during the evolution of both types of portal hypertension. Thus, prehepatic portal hypertension, or compensated hypertension by portal vein ligation in the rat, is associated with molecular mechanisms related to vitellogenesis, where hepatic steatosis and splanchnic angiogenesis stand out. In turn, extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat induces intrahepatic portal hypertension, or decompensated hypertension, with ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatic system, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of ascites. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluid also allows for translational investigation. The induced regression of the splanchnic system to extraembryonic functions by portal hypertension highlights the great relevance of the extraem-bryonic structures even during postnatal life.

We present results of a long-term study aimed to optimize Nile tilapia O. niloticus production in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in México City. Three experiments were evaluated: 1) fry production;2) production of masculinized fries;and 3) assessment of growth under three different densities (10, 30 and 75 fish/m3). The broodstock produced on average 2400 ± 600 fry every 15 days during six months, with a total production of 28,800 ± 2000. One hundred percent males were produced in 274-L raceways in an eight-week period. The obtained results in fish production in the RAS system indicated variations related to density. A daily growth rate of 3.6 g/day was registered with a density of 10 fish/m3, 0.9 g/day in 30 fish/m3 and 0.4 g/day in 75 fish/m3. This information could be useful for production purposes in this type of systems.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which are a class of highly evolutionarily conserved non-coding RNAs, modulate gene expression and are regulated by specific genes. Several studies have shown that the expression of miRNAs is deregulated in Hepatitis C virus (HCV) & Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, liver cancer progression, tumor invasion and metastasis. There are a number of high-quality review articles relative to the general role of miRNA alterations in carcinogenesis and specific reviews dealing with the miRNA changes in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangio-carcinoma (CCA). Since primary liver cancer is predominantly comprised of HCC and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), in the present review we specifically focus on recent advances of miRNAs related to tumorigenesis, invasion and metastasis of primary liver cancer, with special emphasis on their relationships to their target genes. HCV & HBV are major causes of liver disease, including acute and chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and HCC, while HCV infection is a risk factor for ICC. We also discuss the mi-RNA alterations involved in HCV & HBV infection. We briefly describe advances in molecular signaling of miRNAs in liver cancers and present insights into new therapeutic clues that target liver cancer.

This paper studies a class of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDE)in a general Markovian *** forward SDE represents a large class of strong Markov semimartingales,and the backward generator requires only mild regularity *** authors showthat the Four Step Scheme introduced by Ma,et al.(1994) is still effective in this ***,the authors show that the adapted solution of the FBSDE exists and is unique over any prescribedtime duration;and the backward components can be determined explicitly by the forward componentvia the classical solution to a system of parabolic integro-partial differential *** importantconsequence the authors would like to draw from this fact is that,contrary to the general belief,in aMarkovian set-up the martingale representation theorem is no longer the reason for the well-posednessof the FBSDE,but rather a consequence of the existence of the solution of the decoupling integralpartialdifferential ***,the authors briefly discuss the possibility of reducing the regularityrequirements of the coefficients by using a scheme proposed by *** (2002) to the current case.
