Assessment of the effects of intrastromal injection of adipose-derived stem cells in keratoconus patients

·AIm: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intrastromal transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells(ASCs) in keratoconus patients.·mETHODS: This study was conducted on 8 eyes of 8 patients with moderate to severe keratoconus. In the patients, ophthalmic assessments including visual acuity, refraction, slit lamp examination, fundoscopy, corneal topography, and confocal microscopy were performed. Autologous stem cells were used. The isolated stem cells were injected into the corneal stroma by using femtosecond laser. Surgical procedure was similar to intracorneal ring implantation. All patients were re-assessed 1, 3, and 6mo after surgery.·RESULTS: The baseline mean visual acuity was 0.48±0.18 and improved to 0.66±0.17 after surger y and final acuity increased by 1.85±0.80 lines(P=0.001).The mean spherical refraction of patients improved 0.34 ± 0.35 D(P=0.039), and the mean cylindrical refraction of patients improved 0.84±0.23 D(P=0.016). The mean flat keratometry decreased 0.78±0.71 D(P=0.017), and the mean steep keratometry decreased 0.59±0.68 D(P=0.023). The mean central corneal thickness of patients improved of 6.29±4.47 μm(P=0.03). The mean keratocyte density at the anterior and middle stroma of cornea increased(Pmained stable at the posterior stroma after 6mo. All patients had no complications and their corneas remained transparent. ·CONCLUSION: Intrastromal transplantation of ASCs has positive effects on vision and refractive parameters in most patients with keratoconus. After six months, visual acuity improved moderately, corneal parameters reduced slightly, and stromal keratocytes density increased. This modality is safe, and patients do not have any complications.

Preyssler acid H14[NaP5W30O110] was used as reducing agent and stabilizer for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles by photolysis of Au(III)/Preyssler acid/propan-2-ol *** acid plays both the role of transferring electrons from propan-2-ol to Au(III) and stabilizing the ***-2-ol was used as sacrificial reagent for the photoformation of reduced Preyssler *** nanoparticles (Au NPs) were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy,transmission electron microscopy (TEm),and particle size distribution (PSD) *** synthesized Au NPs had a uniform hexagonal morphology and their size was about 17 *** catalytic performance of these NPs for photodegradation of methyl orange (meO) was investigated in aqueous ***-Vis studies showed that Au NPs can catalyze photodegradation of this azo *** pseudo-first-order rate constants were also calculated for this reaction.

Synthesis of vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite biochar via a novel developed functionalization method to recover phosphate as a potential fertilizer substitute

The effectiveness of phosphate(P)removal from aqueous solutions was investigated by novel low-cost biochars synthesized from vinasse and functionalized with calcined *** vinasse-derived biochar,synthesized via pyrolysis at different temperatures,showed easy preparation and a large surface *** novel vinasse biochar nanocomposites were prepared by adding dolomite to the vinasse biochars with different weight percentages(10,20 and 30%).The characteristics of the prepared materials were identified for further understanding of the inherent adsorption mechanism between P ions and vinasse ***-dolomite nanocomposite was very effective in the adsorption of P species from aqueous *** effect of the operational factors on Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite was explored by applying response surface methodology(RSm).According to RSm results,the optimum condition was achieved to be contact time 90(min),250(mg/L)of P concentration and pH *** isotherm and kinetic studies were applied on experimental data to understand the adsorption *** Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite revealed preferential P species adsorption in the presence of co-existing *** P species could be recovered by 1.0 mHC 1 where the efficiency was not affected up to the fifth *** P-loaded Vinasse-dolomite nanocomposite was successfully tested on a plant;it significantly improved its growth and proved its potency as a P-based fertilizer substitute.

Transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS)has been reportedly beneficial for different neurodegenerative *** has been reported as a potential adjunctive or alternative treatment for auditory verbal hallucination(AVH).This study aims to review the effects of tDCS on AVH in patients with schizophrenia through combining the evidence from randomized clinical trials(RCTs).The databases of PsycINFO(2000–2019),Pubmed(2000–2019),EmBASE(2000–2019),CINAHL(2000–2019),Web of Science(2000–2019),and Scopus(2000–2019)were systematically *** clinical trials with RCT design were selected for final analysis.A total of nine RCTs were eligible and included in the *** RCTs were included in the final *** them,six RCTs reported a significant reduction of AVH after repeated sessions of tDCS,whereas three RCTs did not show any advantage of active tDCS over sham *** current studies showed an overall decrease of approximately 28%of AVH after active tDCS and 10%after sham *** tDCS protocols targeting the sensorimotor frontal-parietal network showed greater treatment effects compared with the protocols targeting other *** this regard,cathodal tDCS over the left temporoparietal area showed inhibitory effects on *** most effective tDCS protocol on AVHs was twice-daily sessions(2 mA,20-minute duration)over 5 consecutive days(10 sessions)with the anode over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the cathode over the left temporal *** patient-specific and diseasespecific factors such as young age,nonsmoking status,and higher frequencies of AVHs seemed to be the predictors of treatment *** together,the results of tDCS as an alternative treatment option for AVH show controversy among current literatures,since not all studies were ***,the studies targeting the same site of the brain showed that the tDCS could be a promising treatment option to reduce *** RCTs,with larger sample sizes,should be con

Comparative numerical study of single and two-phase models of nanofluid heat transfer in wavy channel

The main purpose of this study is to survey numerically comparison of two- phase and single phase of heat transfer and flow field of copper-water nanofluid in a wavy channel. The computational fluid dynamics （CFD） prediction is used for heat transfer and flow prediction of the single phase and three different two-phase models （mixture, volume of fluid （VOF）, and Eulerian）. The heat transfer coefficient, temperature, and velocity distributions are investigated. The results show that the differences between the temperature fie].d in the single phase and two-phase models are greater than those in the hydrodynamic tleld. Also, it is found that the heat transfer coefficient predicted by the single phase model is enhanced by increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles for all Reynolds numbers; while for the two-phase models, when the Reynolds number is low, increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles will enhance the heat transfer coefficient in the front and the middle of the wavy channel, but gradually decrease along the wavy channel.

Effects of thermal boundary conditions on the joule heating of electrolyte in a microchannel

Joule heating effects on a slit microcharmel filled with electrolytes are comprehensively investigated with emphasis on the thermal boundary conditions. An accurate analytical expression is proposed for the electrical field and the temperature distributions due to Joule heating are numerically obtained from the energy balance equation. The results show that a thermal design based on the average electric potential difference between electrodes can cause severe underestimation of Joule heating. In addition, the parame- tric study of thermal boundary conditions gives us an insight into the best cooling scenario for microfluidic devices. Other significant thermal characteristics, including Nusselt number, thermophoretic force, and entropy generation, are discussed as well. This study will provide useful information for the optimization of a biomEmS device in relation to the thermal aspect.

Antioxidant effects of quercetin in freeze-thawing process of mouse spermatogonialstem cells

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant effect of quercetin on cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents and apoptosis of cryopreserved mouse spermatogonial stem cells (mSSCs). methods: mSSCs were isolated from neonate mice and cultivated in culture medium containing 30 μm quercetin for 48 h and then frozen for 2 weeks. After thawing, mTT assay was carried out to analyze the cell viability. moreover, intracellular ROS levels were measured by flow cytometery and apoptosis was evaluated by detection of phosphatidylserine externalization assay and also real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Pre-treatment of mSSCs by 30 μm quercetin significantly decreased intracellular ROS content and apoptotic cell numbers and improved viability of mSSCs. moreover, the gene expression of Bcl-2 and Bax significantly increased and decreased respectively after the freeze-thawing process. Conclusions: Pre-treatment of mSSCs with quercetin can improve cell viability and reduce apoptosis during freeze-thawing process. It can be a promising way to improve the quality and efficiency of cryopreservation protocols used in fertility preservation strategies.

Application of multi-Step Differential Transform method on Flow of a Second-Grade Fluid over a Stretching or Shrinking Sheet

In this study, a reliable algorithm to develop approximate solutions for the problem of fluid flow over a stretching or shrinking sheet is proposed. It is depicted that the differential transform method (DTm) solutions are only valid for small values of the independent variable. The DTm solutions diverge for some differential equations that extremely have nonlinear behaviors or have boundary-conditions at infinity. For this reason the governing boundary-layer equations are solved by the multi-step Differential Transform method (mDTm). The main advantage of this method is that it can be applied directly to nonlinear differential equations without requiring linearization, discretization, or perturbation. It is a semi analytical-numerical technique that formulizes Taylor series in a very different manner. By applying the mDTm the interval of convergence for the series solution is increased. The mDTm is treated as an algorithm in a sequence of intervals for finding accurate approximate solutions for systems of differential equations. It is predicted that the mDTm can be applied to a wide range of engineering applications.
