Vertical stratification of ichneumonid wasp communities： the effects of forest structure and life-history traits

Parasitoid wasp communities of the canopy of temperate forests are still largely unexplored. Very little is known about the community composition ofparasitoids between canopy and understory and how much of this difference is related to forest structure or parasitoid biological strategies. In this study we investigated upon the difference in the community composition of the parasitic wasps Ichneumonidae between canopy and understory in a lowland temperate forest in northern Italy. We used general linear models to test whether parasitic strategy modifies species vertical stratification and the effect of forest structure. We also tested differences in β-diversity between canopy and understory traps and over time within single forest layers. We found that stand basal area was positively related to species richness, suggesting that the presence of mature trees can influence local wasp diversity, providing a higher number of microhabitats and hosts. The ichneumonid community of the canopy was different from that of the understory, and theβ-diversity analysis showed higher values for the canopy, due to a higher degree of species turnover between traps. In our analyses, the vertical stratification was different between groups of ichneumonids sharing different parasitic strategies. Idiobiont parasitoids of weakly or deeply concealed hosts were more diverse in the understory than in the canopy while parasitoids of spiders were equally distributed between the two layers. Even though the ichneumonid community was not particularly species-rich in the canopy of the temperate forests, the extension of sampling to that habitat significantly increased the number of species recorded.

Towards hydrometeorological thresholds of reservoir-induced landslide from subsurface strain observations

Synergistic multi-factor early warning of large-scale landslides is a crucial component of geohazard prevention and mitigation efforts in reservoir *** forecasting and early warning based on surface displacements have been widely ***,the lack of direct subsurface real-time observations limits our ability to predict critical hydrometeorological conditions that trigger landslide *** this paper,we leverage subsurface strain data measured by high-resolution fiber optic sensing nerves that were installed in a giant reservoir landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR)region,China,spanning a whole hydrologic year since February *** spatiotemporal strain profile has preliminarily identified the slip zones and potential drivers,indicating that high-intensity short-duration rainstorms controlled the landslide kinematics from an observation *** the time lag effect,we reexamined and quantified potential controls of accelerated movements using a data-driven approach,which reveals immediate response of landslide deformation to extreme rainfall with a zero-day *** identify critical hydrometeorological rules in accelerated movements,accounting for the dual effect of rainfall and reservoir water level variations,we thus construct a landslide prediction model that relies upon the boosting decision tree(BDT)algorithm using a dataset comprising daily rainfall,rainfall intensity,reservoir water level,water level fluctuations,and slip zone strain time *** results indicate that landslide acceleration is most likely to occur under the conditions of mid-low water levels(i.e.,57.9 mm and rainfall intensity>24.4 mm/h).Moreover,this prediction model allows us to update hydrometeorological thresholds by incorporating the latest monitoring *** on the shoulder of this landslide case,our study informs a practical and reliable path

Background:Autoimmune pancreatitis(AIP)is a well-recognized fibroinflammatory disease of the *** the significant number of studies published on AIP type 1 and 2,no studies have been focused on AIP type not otherwise specified(NOS)and therefore very little is known about clinical features and long-term outcomes of these *** aim of this study was to investigate clinical and radiological features of AIP type ***:Patients classified as AIP type NOS at clinical onset included in our database prospectively maintained since 1995 were ***,clinical data were collected and ***:Forty-six patients were included in the *** clinical onset was mainly characterized by weight loss,jaundice and acute *** patients(17.4%)were reclassified as AIP type 2 during follow-up because of the development of ulcerative *** patients(15.2%)experienced relapse after steroid treatment but only one(2.2%)needed immunosuppressive drugs because of recurrent ***:AIP type NOS shares clinical features similar to AIP type 2 and a relevant proportion of patients was reclassified as AIP type 2 during follow-up because of the development of ulcerative *** risk of relapse is low but not irrelevant.

dipeptidyl peptidase IV （DPP-IV） is a serine protease best known for its role in inactivating glucagon-like peptide-1 （GLP-1）, pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide （PACAP） and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide （GIP）, three stimulators of pancreatic insulin secretion with beneficial effects on glucose disposal. Owing to the relationship between DPP-IV and these peptides, inhibition of DPP-IV enzyme activity is considered as an attractive treatment option for diabetic patients. Nonetheless, increasing studies support the idea that DPP-IV might also be involved in the development of neurological disorders with a neuroinflammatory component, potentially through its non-incretin activities on immune cells. In this review article, we aim at highlighting recent literature describing the therapeutic value of DPP-IV inhibitors for the treatment of such neurological conditions. Finally, we will illustrate some of the promising results obtained using berberine, a plant extract with potent inhibitory activity on DPP-IV.

Role of MGMT as biomarker in colorectal cancer

O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase(MGMT) gene promoter methylation plays an important role in colorectal carcinogenesis, occurring in about 30%-40% of metastatic colorectal cancer. Its prognostic role has not been defined yet, but loss of expression of MGMT, which is secondary to gene promoter methylation, results in an interesting high response to alkylating agents such as dacarbazine and temozolomide. In a phase 2 study on heavily pre-treated patients with MGMT methylated metastatic colorectal cancer, temozolomide achieved about 30% of disease control rate. Activating mutations of RAS or BRAF genes as well as mismatch repair deficiency may represent mechanisms of resistance to alkylating agents, but a dose-dense schedule of temozolomide may potentially restore sensitivity in RAS-mutant patients. Further development of temozolomide in MGMT methylated colorectal cancer includes investigation of synergic combinations with other agents such as fluoropyrimidines and research for additional biomarkers, in order to better define the role of temozolomide in the treatment of individual patients.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer:Current evidence and future challenges

Gastric cancer still represents one of the major causes of cancer mortality *** survival is mainly related to stage,with a high proportion of patients with metastatic disease at ***,the cure rate largely depend upon surgical *** the additional,albeit small,benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy has been clearly demonstrated,no general consensus has been reached on the best treatment ***,the narrow therapeutic index of adjuvant chemotherapy(i.e.,limited survival benefit with considerable toxicity)requires a careful assessment of expected risks and benefits for individual *** choices vary widely based on the different geographic areas,with chemotherapy alone more often preferred in Europe or Asia and chemoradiotherapy in the United *** the present review we discuss the current evidence and future challenges regarding adjuvant chemotherapy in curatively resected gastric cancer with particular emphasis on the recently completed landmark studies and *** most recent patient-level meta-analysis demonstrated the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy over curative surgery;the same Authors also showed that disease free survival may be used as a surrogate end-point for overall *** finally discuss future research issues such as the need of economic evaluations,development of prognostic or predictive biomarkers,and the unmet clinical need of trials comparing perioperative chemotherapy with adjuvant treatment.

Longitudinal quantitative electroencephalographic study in mono-hemispheric stroke patients

The identification of individual factors modulating clinical recovery after a stroke is fundamental to personalize the therapeutic intervention to enhance the final clinical *** this framework,electrophysiological factors are promising since are more directly related to neuroplasticity,which supports recovery in stroke patients,than neurovascular *** this retrospective observational study,we investigated brain neuronal activity assessed via spectral features and Higuchi's fractal dimension(HFD) of electroencephalographic signals in acute phase(2–10 days from symptom onset,T0) and sub-acute phase(2.5 months,T1) in 24 patients affected by unilateral middle cerebral artery *** assessment of the clinical deficits was performed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS),together with the effective recovery calculated as the ratio between difference of NIHSS at T0 and T1 over the NIHSS value at *** observed that delta and alpha band electroencephalographic signal power changed between the two phases in both the hemispheres ipsilateral(ILH) and contralateral(CHL) to the ***,at T0,bilateral higher delta band power correlated with worse clinical conditions(Spearman's rs = 0.460,P = 0.027 for ILH and rs = 0.508,P = 0.013 for CLH),whereas at T1 this occurred only for delta power in ILH(rs = 0.411,P = 0.046) and not for ***-hemispheric difference(ILH ***) of alpha power in patients was lower at T0 than at T1(P = 0.020).HFD at T0 was lower than at T1(P = 0.005),and at both phases,ILH HFD was lower than CLH HFD(P = 0.020).These data suggest that inter-hemispheric low band asymmetry and fractal dimension changes from the acute to the sub-acute phase are sensitive to neuroplasticity processes which subtend clinical *** study protocol was approved by the Bioethical Committee of Ospedale San Giovanni Calibita Fatebenefretelli(No.40/2011) on July 14,2011.
