An Analysis of Spatio-Temporal Trends of Land Surface Temperature in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area by Applying Landsat Images

Land surface temperature (LST) is a basic determinant of the global thermal behavior of the Earth surface. LST is a vital consideration for the appraisal of gradual thermal change for urban areas to examine the strength of the thermal intensity of the surface of urban heat island (SUHI) and to see how hot the surface of the Earth would be in a particular location. In this respect, the most developed urban city like Dhaka Metropolitan Area (DMA), Bangladesh is considered for estimation of LST, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) changes trend in more developed and growing developing areas. The focus of this study is to find out the critical hotspot zones for further instantaneous analysis between these two types of areas. The trends of long-term spatial and temporal LST and NDVI are estimated applying Landsat images-Landsat 5-TM and Landsat OLI_TIRS-8 for the period of 1988 to 2018 for DMA and for developed and growing developing areas during the summer season like for the month of March. The supervised classification was used to estimate the land cover categories and to generate the LST trends maps of the different percentiles of LSTs over time using the emissivity and effective at sensor brightness temperature. The study found the change in land cover patterns by different LST groups based on 50th, 75th, and 90th percentile where the maximum LST for the whole DMA went up by 2.48°C, 1.01°C, and 3.76°C for the months of March, April, and May, respectively for the period of 1988 to 2018. The highest difference in LST was found for the most recently developed area. The moderate change of LST increased in the built-up areas where LST was found more sensitive to climate change than the growing developed areas. The vegetation coverage area decreased by 6.74% in the growing, developing areas compared to the developed areas

Combine Harvester: Small Machine Solves Big Rice Harvesting Problem of Bangladesh

Bangladesh, a country with 87% of rural households that depend on agriculture and rice dominated diets (70%), engages the country’s food security. Therefore, there is strong advocacy for a mechanized paddy harvesting system for food security in South Asia, mainly Bangladesh. Some harvesting machinery is available;however, the precise roles of a combine harvester during this process are little. This study attempts to understand the consequences of combining harvesters for paddy harvesting and compare them with hand harvesting. For comparison of field performance of combine harvester with traditional harvesting, the experiment was conducted at Gazipur District, Bangladesh, in 2016. Results showed that the labor required for harvesting unit area 283, 15 and 9.87 man-h∙ha−1 for T1 (Sickle + Head carry + Beating + Kula), T2 (Reaper + Trolley carry + Close drum thresher + winnower), T3 (Combine harvester) system, respectively. Likewise, the harvesting costs were 1.84 (T2) and 2.5 (T1) times higher than the combine harvester (T3). Also, the postharvest loss can be saved 1.84%, to use combine harvester over manual harvesting of paddy. The above result revealed that the semi-mechanized and mechanized harvesting system is a time, labor and cost-saving system;however, the manual reaping system is concerned with more postharvest losses (3.09%). This study highlights the importance of combine harvester;however, further research is required in other places with large and mini-combine harvesters under diverse cropping areas and to test a combine harvester’s detailed potentiality.

Effect of Seeding Density on Mat-Type Seedling Quality for Mechanical Transplanting in Dry Season Rice

Rice transplanting with a transplanter is a cost-effective process. Due to labor shortages during the peak time of rice transplanting, it is a promising technology in Bangladesh. However, the high-quality mat-type seedling is a prerequisite factor for mechanical transplanting. The experiments were conducted at three different locations (Gazipur, Tangail, and Rangpur) during the dry season (Boro)/2019-20 to determine the best seeding density for high-quality mat-type seedlings to be prepared for mechanical rice transplanters. The effects of seeding rate on seedling quality such as survival rate, seedling strength, stem thickness of newly released boro rice varieties BRRI dhan86, BRRI dhan89, and BRRI dhan92 were studied using four seeding rates (130, 140, 150, 160 g/tray). Results revealed that BRRI dhan92 showed quick seedling emergence compared to BRRI dhan89 and BRRI dhan86. Seedling mortality was found the lowest BRRI dhan92 while the highest in BRRI dhan86. 25 - 30 days old seedling was found suitable for mechanical transplanting in terms of seedling mortality. Seedling height increased with the increase in seed density. BRRI dhan92 showed the highest stem thickness followed by BRRI dhan89 and BRRI dhan86 with seed rate 150 - 160 g per tray. The suitable seeding rate (150 - 160 g/tray) for the studied varieties was found better for raising mat-type seedlings suitable for mechanical transplanting, which could coordinate the production of larger population growth and higher harvest index to achieve high grain yield.

Assessment of BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester (Model BRRI WCH2021) for Mechanized Rice Harvesting in Bangladesh

Agricultural mechanization plays a pivotal role in the transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture, with a particular focus on labour-intensive activities like harvesting. This study assesses the operational characteristics of the BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester (Model BRRI WCH2021) at the field level. Developed under the SFMRA project, the harvester’s technical performance and loss assessment were conducted during the Boro 2022 and Aman 2022 seasons in farmer fields in Bangladesh’s Rangpur region. The field efficiency of the harvester was determined to be 62.5% and 57.9% in the Boro and Aman seasons, respectively. Fuel consumption rates were recorded at 2.77 l/ha and 2.31 l/ha for the Boro and Aman seasons. The total harvesting losses, encompassing cutter bar, shatter, cylinder, and separation loss, averaged 0.56% and 0.48% in the Boro and Aman seasons, respectively. Mechanized harvesting with the BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester significantly reduced paddy losses by 5.81% compared to manual methods. The field evaluation results indicate the combine harvester’s satisfactory performance, highlighting its potential to alleviate labour demands during peak harvesting. The development of the BRRI WCH offers a sustainable solution for rice harvesting mechanization among progressive farmers. It paves the way for the broader adoption of advanced agricultural technology in Bangladesh.

Sensing and Uptake of Nitrogen in Rice Plant: A Molecular View

As a main feature of plant autotrophy, assimilation of inorganic nitrogen (N) is not only of fundamental interest to the crop, but also a crucial factor in crop productivity. N is the main plant mineral nutrient needed for chlorophyll production and other plant cell components (proteins, nucleic acids and amino acids). I highlighted the novel aspects of N responsive sensors, transporters and signaling molecules recently identified in the monocot rice plant, and discussed their potential roles in N sensing and transporting. Furthermore, over the last couple of years, N sensing has been shown to be affected by different external factors, which act as local signals to trigger systemic signaling coordinated by long-distance transport or mobile signals in plant body. Understanding of this complex regulatory network provides a foundation mechanism for the development of novel strategies to increase the acquisition and transportation efficiency of nitrogen under varying N conditions for rice production.

Is the Trade-led Growth Hypothesis Valid for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?Evidence from an ARDL Approach

This study examines the trade-led growth(TLG)hypothesis for the Kingdom of Saudi *** time-series annual data for the period 1985-2019,the ARDL approach and Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test are applied to accomplish the *** ARDL estimation reveals that trade openness positively causes economic growth in both the long and short run,and the TLG hypothesis is found valid for the *** Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test results have evidenced several unidirectional *** them,trade openness causes economic growth and supports the ARDL finding and hence the TLG hypothesis for the ***,trade openness causes gross fixed capital formation,and the labor force stimulates both economic growth and trade *** findings recommend that the Kingdom may increase its trade to reap further benefits and enhance its income growth.

Sources and Ecological Risks of Heavy Metals in Soils Under Different Land Uses in Bangladesh

Soil heavy metal pollution, influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, significantly reduces environmental quality. In this study, Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in eight different land-use soils from Patuakhali District in Bangladesh were assessed. Concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in soils were 1-87, 5-271, 4-181, 0-80, 0.2-24.0, and 5-276 mg kg-1, respectively, measured using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. The enrichment factor, pollution load index (PLI), and contamination factor (CJ) of metal i were used to assess the ecological risk posed by metals in soils. The PLI ranged from 0.78 to 2.66, indicating baseline levels to progressive deterioration of soil due to metal contamination. However, C;of Cd ranged from 1.8 to 12.0, which showed that the studied soils were strongly impacted by Cd. Considering the severity of the potential ecological risk of a single metal, the descending order was Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr. Soils under all land uses showed moderate to very high potential ecological risk.

Objective:To investigate the antioxidant,antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of whole Leucas aspera(Labiatae)(***)alcoholic ***:Whole *** powder was extracted by absolute ethanol(99.50%).The ethanolic extract was subjected to antioxidant,antibacterial and brine shrimp lethality ***:The extract showed potent radical scavenging effect(antioxidant)with IC_(50)value of(99.58±1.22)μg/mL which was significant(P<0.01)in comparison to ascorbic acid with IC_(50)value of(1.25±0.95)μg/*** case of antibacterial screening,the extract showed notable antibacterial effect against the tested microbial ***(P<0.05)zone of inhibitions against Gram positive Bacillus subtilis[(12.00±1.32)mm]and Bacillus megaterium[(13.00±1.50)mm],Staphylococcus aureus[(8.00±0.50)mm]and Gram negative Salmonella typhi[(6.00±0.50)mm],Salmonella paratyphi[(8.00±1.00)mm],Shigella dysenteriae[(9.00±1.32)mm]and Vibrio cholerae[(9.00±0.66)mm]was *** brine shrimp lethality bioassay,the extract showed the LC_(50)value as(181.68±2.15)μg/mL which was statistically significant(P<0.01)compared to positive control vincristine sulfate[LC_(50)=(0.76±0.04)μg/mL].Conclusions:The results demonstrate that the ethanolic extract of *** could be used as antibacterial,pesticidal and various pharmacologic actives.

The assurance of corporate sustainability reporting has long been a controversial *** management and suppliers are routinely accused of violating principles ofsustainability, an important exercise in public accountability. This thesis responds to recent callsfor an analysis of the process by which the violation takes place. Integrating elements of neo-institutional theory and arena concept, the thesis provides a detailed study of the sustainablestrategy of H&M.This paper provides a thorough description of various threats to the sustainabledevelopment of H&M, such as their cotton frond problem, transport problem, employees training,customer dealings, etc. After that, the paper provides an account of H&M’s effort to seek asolution package to these threats, which together is represented as H&M’s sustainability *** the solution efforts are: they have their own sustainable strategy department, in thiswhich H&M tries to improve itself and resolve their sustainability problems;they are doing a lotof social work, like children education investment, employee training, thus making muchpositive contribute to the community in which it operates. This paper also provides informationon the result of H&M’s sustainability strategy, and draws some lessons from the overall case,which may prove meaningful to other similar clothing companies.

Trace metal contamination in soil is of great concern owing to its long persistence in the environment and toxicity to humans and other *** of six potentially toxic trace metals,Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Cd,and Pb,in urban soils were measured in Dhaka City,*** from different land-use types,namely,agricultural field,park,playground,petrol station,metal workshop,brick field,burning sites,disposal sites of household waste,garment waste,electronic waste,and tannery wast,and construction waste demolishing sites,were *** concentration ranges of Cr,Ni,Cu,As,Pb,and Cd in soils were 2.4–1258,8.3–1044,9.7–823,8.7–277,1.8–80,and 13–842 mg kg^-1,*** concentrations of metals were subsequently used to establish hazard quotients(HQs)for the adult *** metal HQs decreased in the order of As>Cr>Pb>Cd>Ni>*** was the most vital exposure pathway of studied metals from soils followed by dermal contact and *** range of pollution load index(PLI)was 0.96–17,indicating severe contamination of soil by trace *** the comprehensive potential ecological risk(PER),soils from all land-use types showed considerable to very high ecological *** findings of this study revealed that in the urban area studied,soils of some land-use types were severely contaminated with trace ***,it is suggested that more attention should be paid to the potential health risks to the local inhabitants and ecological risk to the surrounding ecosystems.
