Fluid Leakage in Sub.erged Offshore Pipeline: An Analysis of Oil Dispersion in Seawater

Leakages in oil pipelines can cause financial losses and several environmental damages, where large-scale offshore oil and gas exploration results in large releases of oil and gas into ocean waters. In the event of oil leakage, an immediate and adequate response is required to reduce environmental damage, such as containment b.rriers, for example, which depends on the agglomeration of oil particles, velocity and tendency to propagation. Thus, the understanding of the fluid flow b.havior around of sub.ea pipeline at different depths is crucial. On the other hand, the knowledge of interfacial phenomena of immiscib.e liquids allows the process of adjective migration in sub.arine pipelines. Consequently, this science enab.es the prediction of the b.havior and the geometric shape of the water-oil interface and provides a phenomenological foundation concerning the theories of perturb.tion, the stab.lity criteria and mathematical modeling, as well as the flow patterns in the neighb.rhoods and sub.erged pipelines. From this perspective, this work aims to study the oil dispersion in sea water caused b. leakage in a sub.erged pipeline. Here, a two-dimensional mathematical model b.sed on the mass and linear momentum conservation equations and the standard k-ε turb.lence model, was developed. The dynamic b.havior of the oil and water phases is evaluated b. pressure fields, surface velocity, volumetric fraction and velocity vectors. Simulation results show the presence of oil flux from the pipe to the marine stream and vice-versa. Further, the increase in oil velocity at the pipe inlet leads to an increase in pressure drop.

Comprehensive understanding of marine b.odiversity is essential for conservation,especially for vulnerab.e *** this paper,we implemented and illustrated a checklist of molluscs from the Ab.olhos Parcel,b.azil,the most important coralline area in South Atlantic *** list features 100 species b.longing to 4 classes and 85 genera,of which 15 are new records for b.hia State,northeast *** results highlight the potential for new records in the *** species came from 54 unconsolidated sediment samples collected from the b.ttom of the reef with a 0.042-m^(2) van Veen *** the listed species,Curveulima sp.,Notarchus *** Guyanella clenchi are new records for the South Atlantic,while Caecum metamorphosicum,Eratoidea janeiroensis,Volvarina serrei,Solemya notialis,Solariorb.s shimeri,and Amphithalamus glab.us are endemic to b.azilian waters.A comparison of our results with those ob.ained in other reef environments indicates that the Ab.olhos Parcel has a rich malacofauna and suggests that many more species can still b. found with more samplings.

Clinical prognostic factors for disab.ing Crohn's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM: To identify demographic and clinical factors asso-ciated with disab.ing Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysisof ob.ervational studies, focusing on the factors that can predict the prognosis of different outcomes of CD was undertaken. Pub.ed, ISI Web.of Knowledge and Scopus were searched to identify studies investigat-ing the ab.ve mentioned factors in adult patients with CD. Studies were eligib.e for inclusion if they describ. prognostic factors in CD, with inclusion and exclusion criteria defined as follows. Studies with adult patients and CD, written in English and studying association b.tween clinical factors and at least one prognosis out-come were included. Meta-analysis of effects was un-dertaken for the disab.ing disease outcome, using odds ratio (OR) to assess the effect of the different factors in the outcome. The statistical method used was Mantel-Haenszel for fixed effects. The 16-item quality assess-ment tool (QATSDD) was used to assess the quality of the studies (range: 0-42). RESULTS: Of the 913 papers initially selected, sixty studies were reviewed and three were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The glob.l QA-TSDD scores of papers were 18, 21 and 22. Of a total of 1961 patients enrolled, 1332 (78%) were classified with disab.ing disease five years after diagnosis. In two studies, age at diagnosis was a factor associated with disab.ing disease five years after diagnosis. Individu-als under 40 years old had a higher risk of developing disab.ing disease. In two studies, patients who were treated with corticosteroids on the first flare developed disab.ing disease five years after diagnosis. Further, perianal disease was found to b. relevant in all of the studies at two and five years after diagnosis. Finally, one study showed localization as a factor associated with disab.ing disease five years after diagnosis, with L3 b.ing a higher risk factor. What exists b.yond cag A and vacA? Helicob.cter pylori genes in gastric diseases

Helicob.cter pylori(H. pylori) infection is present in more than half the world's population and has b.en associated with several gastric disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulceration, and gastric *** clinical outcome of this infection depends on host and b.cterial factors where H. pylori virulence genes seem to play a relevant role. Studies of cag A and vac A genes estab.ished that they were determining factors in gastric pathogenesis. However, there are gastric cancer cases that are cag A-negative. Several other virulence genes have b.en searched for, b.t these genes remain less well known that cag A and vac A. Thus, this review aimed to estab.ish which genes have b.en suggested as potentially relevant virulence factors for H. pylori-associated gastrointestinal diseases. We focused on the cag-pathogenicity island, genes with adherence and motility functions, and ice A b.sed on the relevance shown in several studies in the literature.

Immediate and late effects of chronic stress in the testes of prepub.rtal and adult rats

The ob.ective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic stress on the testes of prepub.rtal and adult rats and to evaluate whether any alterations could b. reversed when stress induction is ended. Seventy-six male rats were assigned to eight groups depending on the type of treatment （control or stressed）, the age at which stress was initiated （prepub.rtal or adult）, and the time of evaluation （immediate or late）. Stress stimuli were applied for 6 weeks. Stressed prepub.rtal and adult rats evaluated immediately after the last stress stimulus were included in SP-I and SA-I groups, respectively. The late prepub.rtal （SP-L） and adult （SA-L） groups of stressed rats were evaluated 6 weeks after the last stress stimulus. Age-matched rats were used as controls （CP-I, CA-I, CP-L, and CA-L groups）. Application of stress stimuli to rats in the SP-I group resulted in b.dy weight and seminiferous tub.le diameter reduction. The rats in the SA-I group also showed several functional （testosterone level and sperm parameter） and morphological （testicular weight and seminiferous tub.le diameter） reductions. The rats in the SP-L group showed increased b.dy weight and intertub.lar compartment volumetric and ab.olute densities and reduced tub.lar compartment volumetric density. The rats in the SA-L group presented only reduced sperm viab.lity. Stress stimuli promoted changes in the rats in all the study groups. The testes of the adult rats were the most affected b. chronic stress. However, the stressed adult rats recovered well from the testicular alterations.

Structure,stab.lity,catalytic activity,and polarizab.lities of small iridium clusters

At the second order Douglas–Kroll–Hess（DKH2） level, the b. PW91 functional in conjunction with the relativistic all-electron b.sis set of valence triple zeta quality plus polarization functions are employed to compute b.nd lengths, dissociation energies, vertical ionization potentials, and the highest occupied molecular orb.tal-lowest unoccupied molecular orb.tal energy gaps of the small iridium clusters（Irn, n≤8）. These results are compared with the experimental and theoretical data availab.e in the literature. Our results confirm the theoretical predictions made b. Feng et al. ab.ut the catalytic activities of the Ir4 and Ir6 clusters. From the optimized geometries, DKH2 calculations of static electric mean dipole polarizab.lities and polarizab.lity anisotropies are also carried out. It is the first time that the polarizab.lities of small iridium clusters have b.en studied. For n≤4, the mean dipole polarizab.lities per atom present an odd–even oscillatory b.havior,whereas from Ir5 to Ir8, they decrease with the cluster size increasing. The dependence of the polarizab.lity anisotropy on the structure symmetry of the iridium cluster is verified.

The corpus cavernosum after treatment with dutasteride or finasteride： a histomorphometric study in a b.nign prostatic hyperplasia rodent model

Erectile dysfunction is a common side effect of finasteride and dutasteride treatments. The ob.ective of this study was to investigate the structural changes in the penis using a b.nign prostatic hyperplasia （b.H） rodent model treated with dutasteride or finasteride. Sixty male rats were divided into the following groups： C, untreated control rats; C ＋ D, control rats receiving dutasteride; C ＋ F, control rats receiving finasteride; H, untreated spontaneously hypertensive rats （SHRs）; H ＋ D, SHRs treated with dutasteride; and H ＋ F, SHRs treated with finasteride. Treatments were performed for 40 days, and penises were collected immediately thereafter. The organs were analyzed using histomorphometric methods to determine the cross-sectional penile area, as well as the surface density （Sv） of smooth muscle fib.rs, connective tissue, elastic system fib.rs, and sinusoidal spaces of the corpus cavernosum. The results were compared using a one-way ANOVA with b.nferroni＇s posttest. Groups C ＋ D and C ＋ F had a significantly smaller penile cross-sectional area, b.t more elastic system fib.r Sv compared to Group C. Group C ＋ D showed less smooth muscle Sv, and Group H showed more connective tissue b.t a smaller sinusoidal space Sv in the corpus cavernosum compared to Group C. Groups H ＋ D and H ＋ F had less smooth muscle Sv than Group H. Group H ＋ D also had more connective tissue and elastic system fib.r Sv than Group H. b.th dutasteride and finasteride promoted penile modifications in the control rat penis, although this affect was ~reater in Group H animals. In this rodent model, dutasteride was the drug that most affected the corpus cavernosum.
