There are few tumor cell subpopulations with stem cell characteristics in tumor tis-sue,defined as cancer stem cells(CSCs)or cancer stem-like cells(CSLCs),which can recon-struct neoplasms with malignant biological behaviors such as invasiveness via self-renewal and unlimited *** microenvironment that CsCs depend on consists of various cellular components and corresponding medium *** these factors existing at a variety of levels and forms,cytokine networks and numerous signal pathways play an important role in signaling *** factors promote or maintain cancer cell stem-ness,and participate in cancer recurrence,metastasis,and *** review aims to summarize the recent molecular data concerning the multilayered relationship between CsCs and CsC-favorable *** also discuss the therapeutic implications of target-ing this synergistic interplay,hoping to give an insight into targeting cancer cell stemness for tumortherapyandprognosis.

OBJECTIVE: To better understand mucobilia as well as its diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: The etiological factors, diagnosis, and treatment of 8 patients with mucobilia were discussed. RESULTS: Mucobilia characterized by copious mucin secretion in the extrahepatic bile duct resulted in obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. Four patients receiving curative resection of primary, lesions were free from jaundice and cholangitis while the other 4 who had had palliative biliary drainage showed persistent symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Mucobilia is attributable to biliary mucous metaplasia, and benign or malignant biliary tumors. Cholangioscopy and biopsy can offer precise information about the location and extension of the primary lesion. The best choice of treatment is curative resection of the primary lesion.

Objective: To discuss the clinical features of patients with heterotopic pancreas, their diagnosis and surgi- cal treatment. Methods: Seven patients with heterotopic pancreas were treated surgically in our hospital from August 1992 to March 1999. Results: Of the 7 patients, 4 had heterotopic pancre- as located in the duodenum, 2 in the jejunum, and 1 in the stomach. Four patients experienced abdominal pain, 3 icterus, 1 duodenal obstruction, and 1 diges- tive tract bleeding. Three patients were complicated by cholelithiasis, and 1 patient was complicated by diverticulum of the jejunum. All seven patients were misdiagnosed or undefined preoperatively. They un- derwent surgery and were confirmed pathologically. Conclusions: Heterotopic pancreas is extremely diffi- cult to diagnose before operation since no specific clinical signs are seen in such patients. Once diag- nosed with symptoms or not, the patients should un- dergo surgery for correct diagnosis and avoidance of relative complications.

AIM To evaluate the value of arsenic trioxide (ATO) in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and to investigate its *** BXSB mice were divided into ATO treated group and control group randomly,17 for each *** treated group was given ATO 0.4 mg·kg·BW·ip every other day until d 105 and the observation ended on d *** time was recorded and the level of anti-dsDNA antibody and IgG were measured by ELISA in two *** 20 BXSB mice divided into 2 groups were given the same treatment respectively and executed in d *** spleen and kidney were removed and total RNA were *** level of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) mRNA in renal and spleen tissue was measured by *** Up to d210,8 of BXSB mice died in ATO treated group and 13 died in control group (x= 4.20,P=0.040).On d90 and d105,The average level of serum anti-dsDNA antibody (A 450 nm) was (0.335±0.067) and (0.223±0.070) in ATO treated group,(0.688±0.055) and (0.683±0.040) in *** was much lower in ATO treated group,P＜*** d105,the serum level of IgG was much lower in ATO treated group than that of pre-treatment and control, which were (4.9±1.3),(6.6±1.4) and (6.9±1.0) g.L-1 (P＜0.05);the expression of IFN-γ mRNA in spleen and renal tissue in ATO treated group was significantly lower than that of control(P=0.002,P=0.042).CONCLUSIIN ATO could prolong the survival time of BXSB mice,lower the serum level of anti-dsDNA antibody,IgG and depress the high expression of IFN-γ mRNA in spleen and kidney tissue.
