Sorption of Perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS) including its isomers on hydrargillite as a function of pH,humic substances and Na2SO4

Perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS)is a persistent organic pollutant(POP)and emergent contaminant that are widespread in the *** the mechanisms controlling the distribution of PFOS and its isomers between hydrargillite and the water phase is important in order to study their redistribution and mobility in the *** study investigated the effects of pH,humic acid,fulvic acid and Na_(2)SO_(4) on sorption of PFOS isomers to hydrargillite.A mixture of PFOS isomers was spiked into water and hydrargillite was added to the system and shaken for one day;the system was tested with different aqueous *** of PFOS isomers in the aqueous phase were quantified using an ultra-performance liquid chromatograph coupled to a triple quadrupole mass *** results showed that the distribution coefficients of PFOS isomers were found to be 0.76,0.71,0.93 and 0.90 at pH 6.5,for 3-/4-/5-PFOS,6-/2-PFOS,L-PFOS and total PFOS *** distribution coefficients increased at lower pH and decreased at alkaline *** presence of humic substances(HS)increased the sorption slightly at the environmental pH of 6.5,although a competition effect was observed during acidic conditions.A tendency of PFOS distribution to hydrargillite in the presence of Na_(2)SO_(4) was like its behavior in the presence of HS although the mechanisms behind the sorption were interpreted *** study revealed that L-PFOS was readily sorbed when no other chemicals were added or in 20 mg/L FA or 100 mg/L Na_(2)SO_(4).We suggest that an increase in PFOS sorption in the presence of HS may be due to hydrophobic mechanisms while Na_(2)SO_(4) contributed to increased sorption through ionic strength effects.

A short P-wave duration is associated with incident heart failure in the elderly: a 15 years follow-up cohort study

Contribution of precursor compounds to the release of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs) from waste water treatment plants(WWTPs)

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances（PFASs） are ubiquitous in sludge and water from waste water treatment plants, as a result of their incorporation in everyday products and industrial processes. In this study, we measured several classes of persistent PFASs,precursors, transformation intermediates, and newly identified PFASs in influent and effluent sewage water and sludge from three municipal waste water treatment plants in Sweden, sampled in 2015. For sludge, samples from 2012 and 2014 were analyzed as *** of precursors in sludge exceeded those of perfluoroalkyl acids and sulfonic acids（PFCAs and PFSAs）, in 2015 the sum of polyfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid esters（PAPs） were 15–20 ng/g dry weight, the sum of fluorotelomer sulfonic acids（FTSAs） was 0.8–1.3 ng/g,and the sum of perfluorooctane sulfonamides and ethanols ranged from non-detected to 3.2 ng/g. Persistent PFSAs and PFCAs were detected at 1.9–3.9 ng/g and 2.4–7.3 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The influence of precursor compounds was further demonstrated by an observed substantial increase for a majority of the persistent PFCAs and PFSAs in water after waste water treatment. Perfluorohexanoic acid（PFHxA）, perfluorooctanoic acid（PFOA）, perfluorohexane sulfonic acid（PFHxS）, and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid（PFOS）had a net mass increase in all WWTPs, with mean values of 83%, 28%, 37% and 58%,respectively. The load of precursors and intermediates in influent water and sludge combined with net mass increase support the hypothesis that degradation of precursor compounds is a significant contributor to PFAS contamination in the environment.

Retinal pigment epithelium–Bruch’s membrane volume in grading of age-related macular degeneration

AIM:To assess the agreement of optical coherence tomography(OCT)algorithm-based retinal pigment epithelium–Bruch’s membrane complex volume(RBV)with fundus photograph-based age-related macular degeneration(AMD)***:Digital color fundus photographs(CFPs)and spectral domain OCT images were acquired from 96 elderly *** were graded according to Age-Related Eye Disease Study(AREDS)*** image segmentation and RBV data calculation were done with OrionTM *** and multivariate analyses were performed to find out whether AMD lesion features associated with higher ***:RBV correlated with AMD grading(rs=0.338,P=0.001),the correlation was slightly stronger in early AMD(n=52;rs=0.432,P=0.001).RBV was higher in subjects with early AMD compared with those with no AMD lesions evident in fundus photographs(1.05±0.20 vs 0.96±0.13 mm3,P=0.023).In multivariate analysis higher RBVs were associated significantly with higher total drusen(β=0.388,P=0.027)and pigmentation areas(β=0.319,P=0.020)in fundus photographs,whereas depigmentation area(β=-0.295,P=0.015)associated with lower ***:RBV correlate with AMD grading status,with a stronger association in patients with moderate,non-late AMD *** effect is driven mostly by lesions with drusen or *** with depigmentation tend to have lower *** is more comprehensive measurement of the key area of AMD pathogenesis,compared to sole drusen volume *** measurements are independent on grader variations and offer a possibility to quantify early and middle grade AMD lesions in a research setting,but may not substitute fundus photograph-based grading in the whole range of AMD spectrum.

Microscopic colitis, comprising collagenous and lymphocytic colitis, is characterized clinically by chronic watery diarrhea, and a macroscopically normal colonic mucosa where diagnostic histopathological features are seen on microscoplc incidence of each disorder examination. The annual is 4-6/100000 inhabitants, with a peak incidence in 60-70-year-old individuals and a noticeable female predominance for collagenous colitis. The etiology is unknown. Chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue and fecal incontinence are common symptoms, which impair the health-related quality of life of the patient. There is an association with other autoimmune disorders such as celiac disease, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders and arthritis. Budesonide is the best-documented shortterm treatment, but the optimal long-term strategy needs further study. The long-term prognosis is good and the risk of complications including colonic cancer is low.

AIM： To study the association between inflammatory bowel disease （IBD） and genetic variations in eosinophil protein X （EPX） and eosinophil cationic protein （ECP）. METHODS： DNA was extracted from ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid blood of 587 patients with Crohn＇s disease （CD）, 592 with ulcerative colitis （UC） and 300 healthy subjects. The EPX405 （G 〉 C, rs2013109）, ECP434 （G 〉 C, rs2073342） and ECP562 （G 〉 C, rs2233860） gene polymorphisms were analysed, by the 5＇-nuclease allelic discrimination assay. For de- termination of intracellular content of EPX and ECP in granulocytes, 39 blood samples was collected and extracted with a buffer containing cetyltrimethylam- monium bromide. The intracellular content of EPX was analysed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent as- say. The intracellular content of ECP was analysed with the UniCAP system as described by the manufacturer. Statistical tests for calculations of results were χ2 test, Fisher＇s exact test, ANOVA, Student-Newman-Keuls test, and Kaplan-Meier survival curve with Log-rank test for trend, the probability values of P 〈 0.05 were considered statistically ***： The genotype frequency for males with UC and with an age of disease onset of ≥ 45 years （n = 57） was for ECP434 and ECP562, GG = 37%, GC = 60%, CC = 4% and GG = 51%, GC = 49%, CC = 0% respectively. This was significantly different from the healthy subject＇s genotype frequencies of ECP434 （GG = 57%, GC = 38%, CC = 5%; P = 0.010） and ECP562 （GG = 68%, GC = 29%,CC = 3%; P = 0.009）. The genotype frequencies for females, with an age of dis- ease onset of ≥ 45 years with CD （n = 62）, was for the ECP434 and ECP562 genotypes GG = 37%, GC =52%, CC = 11% and GG = 48%, GC = 47% and CC = 5% respectively. This was also statistically different from healthy controls for both ECP434 （P = 0.010） and ECP562 （P = 0.013）. The intracellular protein concen- tration of EPX and ECP was calculated in μg/10^6 eosi- nophils and then correlated to the EPX 405 genotypes

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(POPs)is a legally binding instrument for 186 Parties(status:April 2023).Accordingly,among other responsibilities,countries are obliged to report the production,import,or export of the POPs listed in Annexes A,B,or C;provide information to registers;maintain inventories;and monitor the presence of POPs in the *** the broader context of international chemicals and waste management,producer responsibilities,harmonized reporting,and compliance with national and international regulations,Ecuador has addressed the newly listed group of perfluorinated alkyl substances(PFAS)in its national implementation plan and sent selected products from its national market for PFAS *** products analyzed came from the initially listed fields of specific exemptions and acceptable purposes,including:fire-fighting foams;photographic aids;greasers/degreasers;various kinds of paper/packaging;textiles;and leather,coatings,cleaners,metal plating,and *** results showed that the three PFAS presently listed in the Stockholm Convention could be quantified in only a few samples;additional PFAS,not yet listed in the Convention also had low detection *** the number of samples was limited,the samples covered a large spectrum of sample matrices,making it possible to conclude that—once these products become waste and are regulated under the Basel Convention—they would not constitute a disposal ***,verification of the presence of PFAS in products on the market is expected to pose an analytical challenge for both,developed and developing countries.

Perfluoroalkane acids in human milk under the global monitoring plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants(2008-2019)

Within the global monitoring plan(GMP)established by article 16 of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants,perfluorooctane sulfonic acid(PFOS),perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA),and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS)are recommended for analysis in core matrices to assess occurrence and changes geographically and with *** 101 samples consisting of 86 national pools and 15 pools from States in Brazil obtained between 2008 and 2019,PFHxS was detected in 17%of the national pools and none in *** and PFOS had a detection frequency of 100%and 92%,*** perfluoroalkane substances(PFAS)had either low detection frequencies and median values of zero(carboxylic acids C4-C11;except PFOA)or could not be quantified in any sample(sulfonic acids,C4-C10,and long-chain carboxylic acids,C_(12)-C_(14)).Correlation between PFOA and PFOS was moderately(r=0.58).Whereas median values were almost identical(18.9 pg/g *** PFOS;18.6 pg/g *** PFOA),PFOS showed larger ranges(<6.2 pg/g f.w.-212 pg/g f.w.)than PFOA(<6.2 pg/g f.w.-63.4 pg/g f.w.).It was shown that wealthier countries had higher PFOA concentrations than poorer *** difference in concentrations was found for samples collected in countries having or not having ratified the Stockholm Convention amendments to list PFOS or *** goal to achieve 50%decrease in concentrations within ten years was met by Antigua and Barbuda,Kenya,and Nigeria for PFOS and by Antigua and Barbuda for *** a few cases,increases were observed;one country for PFOS,four countries for PFOA.

Metadata Analysis of Persistent Organic Pollutants in National Pools of Human Milk in Support of the Stockholm Convention Implementation

A set of human milk samples,consisting of pools from up to 50 mothers that delivered their first baby was assessed for the persistent organic pollutants(POPs)listed in the Stockholm *** must be noted that only samples that qualified for the criteria,as established in the global monitoring plan of the Stockholm Convention,following an initial protocol from the World Health Organization,were *** data do not allow for an assessment of POP concentrations in breast milk with lactation period nor,in most cases and when not indicated otherwise,a comparison within the same *** assessment does not rank the POPs as to the risk for *** the measurements provide a basis for countries to compare among POPs or with other countries.A regional preference for certain POPs could not be identified;thus,taking into account global food supply chains and local production elsewhere does not allow us to prioritize a country for a certain *** the highest concentrations were always found for the sum of DDT,these samples were not prominent in multivariate statistical *** best indicator for the scale of POPs in breast milk was the sampling year:the earlier a national pool was created,the higher and the wider spread were the concentrations:see the example of dioxin-like POPs and indicator *** some POPs,the income of a country seems to indicate scale and POP *** population density was not found to be a suitable predictor or *** all POPs seemed to level off and some POPs were only measured after the entry-into-force of the Stockholm Convention in 2004,we do not have a strong indicator to determine POP concentrations in the 1980s or before.
