The meaning of complementary, alternative and traditional medicine among the Indonesian psychology community: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE： Complementary, alternative and traditional medicine （CATM） is a new field, as well as a promising area of study and practice in psychology. It is important to research the cultural context and meaning of CATM, including its definitions and examples, among different communities of Psychology because CATM＇s use is dependent on how it is understood by the members. The aim of this pilot study is to provide an interpretation of the Indonesian psychology community＇s understanding of CATM through a qualitative approach. METHODS： Online interviews with open-ended questions and purposive sampling were used. Participants were dominantly psychologists or lecturers in clinical psychology area. Ten males and 12 females with an average age of 28.0 ＋ 2.5 years voluntarily participated in this study. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and reviewed and analysed by the two authors to ensure accuracy of interpretation. RESULTS： It was found that there was no single meaning of CATM among the Indonesian community of Psychology. Participants were not familiar enough with the terms and tended to use them with overlap. It can be suggested that ＂complementary medicine＂ and ＂alternative medicine＂ or ＂complementary- alternative medicine＂ combined provides more suitable terminology for use among Indonesian psychology community when communicating with other health care professionals. CONCLUSION： The understanding of the terms and examples of CATM were diverse and were often used interchangeably in the projects/interviews. It was also found that Indonesian psychologists required more education regarding CATM. In addition, future studies with more participants from various aspects of the psychology community should be conducted to capture a more representative sample.

From the Cognition of the Sick at Heart to the Cognition of Ghosts: The Knowledge Transformation of Cognitive psychology in the Late Qing/Republican Era(1895-1949)

In examining the historical changes in cognitive psychology from 1895 to 1949, it is necessary to transform cognitive psychology into cognitive practice. In the late Qing and early Republic era(1895-1919), cognitive practice mainly appeared as the cognition of the sick at heart. Against the background of the late Qing importation of Western learning aimed at securing national salvation, the intellectual class, represented by Tan Sitong,hastily dressed the wound to the traditional Chinese learning of Heaven and man inflicted by late nineteenth century scientific knowledge from Europe and America. They regarded cognition as the understanding gained in the practice of self-cultivation, as affording man a spiritual resting place between Heaven and Earth. By the time of the Republic of China(1920-1949), the main form of cognitive practice had become ghostly cognition.Under the banner of saving the country by means of science, higher education researchers,represented by Lu Zhiwei, explored cognition with the help of such intermediaries as physiological mechanisms and language structure. Men could easily become ghosts trapped in intermediaries when they plunged into the conceptual world in search of truth,as their cognitive practice evolved into the conceptual grasp of ghosts. This ghostly cognition continued into later information processing psychology and was disseminated among the mass of the public. A deeper level of the cognition of the sick at heart remains for future study, on the lengthy road home.

He made pioneering researches on the determination of the color vision and the Chinese skin color. He is a member of executive committee of the AFRO-ASIAN Psychological Association （AAPA）, the National Color Standardization Committee, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science （AAAS）（Fig. 1）.

History of Psychology in China： Contributions, Challenges, and Future

The history of Psychology makes three major contributions：（1） promoting the development of Psychology in China; （2） establishing the history of Chinese psychology as an academic discipline; （3） playing an important role in training the next generation of Chinese psychologists. This effort faces numerous challenges, including the reduction in undergraduate teaching hours, declining enrolments at the postgraduate level, limited innovation in research, and a lack of financial support. These challenges stem largely from changes in the Chinese academic assessing system, the greater weight placed on experimental psychology, and a fewer opportunities for researchers. To address these concerns the history of Psychology in China should make the history of Chinese psychology its research priority, while also presenting its findings to the public, and developing innovative teaching and research approaches.

Western psychology reflects western cultural assumptions, values, contradictions and hopes. Western psychology has assumed it is a universal psychology in its research when in reality it is provincial. It has contributed various pieces to the puzzle of what it means to be human but not all the pieces. It has given us a snapshot of what it means to be human at a particular time and place(20/21 st century, North America and Europe). And, psychological research has not been explicit about its vision for what it means to be a good human and how that varies across cultures. Over the past several decades, cultural psychology has emerged as a powerful force that undermines these assumptions of universality. We have discovered that there are significant differences between culture and communities with cultures in cognition(contextual vs abstract), emotions, pathology, the ideal self, theories of healing, and so on. And since culture seems to impact psychological processes and since human valuing employs various psychological processes, it follows that there may be differences between cultures and communities in the way they experience transcendence, transformation, and health.

本文在将心理学视为一门学科同时也是一种职业的前提下,超越各种具体条件和内容之上对心理学进行了总结。为此,考察了心理学在其发展中所体现的规律性,为了更好地表达,可以称之为从心理学历史所归纳出的"经验教训"。首先,从心理学作为一门科学的历史,可以总结出6条规律:1)心理学具有双重学科的地位。心理学既是一门科学,也是一门综合了生物学、社会学和文化学研究方法的"桥梁"学科;2)必须以实验学作为方法学的指南;3)基础研究和应用研究成果的整合利用;4)需要接受各方面的启发;5)全球化和本土化的相互补充;6)心理学在科学发展史中的学科力量。从将心理学视为一种职业来考察心理学发展史,还可以看到3条普遍的规律:1)职业化的快速发展;2)需要科学研究与实际应用之间的双向交流;3)跨学科专业知识的相互启发。
