Spinal cord injury-induced cognitive impairment: a narrative review

Spinal cord injury is a serious damage to the spinal cord that can lead to life-long *** on its etiology,spinal cord injury can be classified as traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord ***,the pathology of spinal cord injury can be divided into two phases,a primary injury phase,and a secondary injury *** primary spinal cord injury phase involves the initial mechanical injury in which the physical force of impact is directly imparted to the spinal cord,disrupting blood vessels,axons,and neural cell *** the primary injury,a cascade of secondary events begins,expanding the zone of neural tissue damage,and exacerbating neurological *** injury is a progressive condition characterized by pro-inflammatory cytokines,reactive oxygen species,oxidative damage,excitatory amino acids such as glutamate,loss of ionic homeostasis,mitochondrial dysfunction,and cell *** secondary phase lasts for several weeks or months and can be further subdivided into acute,subacute,and *** of the most frequent and devastating complications developed among the spinal cord injury population is cognitive *** risk of cognitive decline after spinal cord injury has been reported to be 13 times higher than in healthy *** exact etiology of this neurological complication remains unclear,however,many factors have been proposed as potential contributors to the development of this disorder,such as concomitant traumatic brain injury,hypoxia,anoxia,autonomic dysfunction,sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea,body temperature dysregulation,alcohol abuse,and certain *** review focuses on a deep understanding of the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury and its relationship to cognitive *** highlight the main mechanisms that lead to the development of this neurological complication in patients with spinal cord injury.

Cerebrovascular diseases are considered to be amongst the most serious public health issues,since they are the third leading cause of death（WHO,2014）and the most common cause of disability *** monetary significance is evidenced by the economic burden imposed on health care systems,given that the cost of medical care for a patient that has suffered a stroke is around$25,741US dollars every 5 years（Luengo-Fernandez et al.,2012）.A stroke occurs as a result of a disturbance or interruption of cerebral blood flow that significantly reduces the supply of oxygen and glucose to the neural tissue. Consequently, several cell death mechanisms （secondary lesion mechanisms） such as necrosis, excitotoxicity, free radical production and inflammation are triggered （Castillo, 2000）.

Effect of Organic Dopants in Dimetallophthalocyanine Thin Films: Application to Optoelectronic Devices

Semiconductor films of organic, doped dimetallophthalocyanine M2Pcs (M = Li, Na) on different substrates were prepared by synthesis and vacuum evaporation. Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) were used as dopants and the structure and morphology of the semiconductor films were studied using IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The absorption spectra recorded in the ultraviolet-visible region for the deposited films showed the Q and Soret bands related to the electronic π-π* transitions in M2Pc molecules. Optical characterization of the films indicates electronic transitions characteristic of amorphous thin films with optical bandgaps between 1.2 and 2.4 eV. Finally, glass/ITO/doped M2Pc/Ag thin-film devices were produced and their electrical behavior was evaluated by using the four-tip collinear method. The devices manufactured from Na2Pc have a small rectifying effect, regardless of the organic dopant used, while the device manufactured from Li2Pc-TCNQ presents ohmic-like behavior at low voltages, with an insulating threshold around 19 V. Parameters such as the hole mobility (μ), the concentration of thermally-generated holes (p0), the concentration of traps per unit of energy (P0) and the total trap concentration (Nt(e)) were also determined for the Li2Pc-TTF device.

Principal Component Analysis of Male Criminal Behavior

The present study was conducted in order to establish factors that can potentially facilitate crime, as well as the status of the emotional wellbeing presented in the prison population. The sample was composed of 358 inmates of the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation number 7 in Mexico. A questionnaire was specifically developed;it evaluated sociodemographic factors and Likert scales of substance intake, domestic violence, and depressive symptoms. Validity and reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.703) of the instrument showed appropriate relations between the reagents of the scales;results showed—through Chi-Square analysis—statistically significant differences in the correlations between sociodemographic factors, domestic violence, addictions, and depressive symptoms. Although results showed a connection between domestic violence and substance abuse with criminal behavior, low socioeconomic conditions exhibited a higher degree of correlation with criminal activity. On the other hand, high depression symptoms are present in one out of every five inmates.

Relevance of Family in Academic Success on Children

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between academic success and functional and dysfunctional families. A non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was used. A convenience sample of 200 children between 6 and 13 years old, primary and junior high school students was conducted (32.3% were female and 67.7% were male). To assess the relationship, a study case of 21 reagents was designed to empty the obtained information from medical review records from a psychopedagogic clinic. Academic success was measured as from the revision of informal tests and standardized tests. Results showed that the population levels of academic success were average. However, a significant relationship between the age of the parents and the level of academic success was found, indicating that these variables are associated with this problem. Besides that, it was found that there is a tendency in children with cognitive, emotional and sensory problems reflected in low academic success. The findings provide information that could be considered for the development of programs of psychopedagogic intervention to treat children with learning disabilities and low academic success.
