Amoxicillin–clavulanic acid induced sperm abnormalities and histopathological changes in mice

Objective: To explore the genotoxic potential and histopathological changes induced in liver, kidney, testis, brain and heart after using the antibiotic drug amoxicillin/clavulanic acid(4:1).Methods: The study included chromosomal aberration analysis in bone-marrow and mouse spermatocytes, induction of sperm morphological abnormalities and histopathological changes in different body organs. The drug was administrated orally at a dose of81 mg/kg body weight twice daily(Total = 162 mg/kg/day) for various periods of time equivalent to 625 mg/men(twice daily).Results: The results revealed non-significant chromosomal aberrations induced after treatment with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid(AC) in both bone marrow and mouse spermatocytes after 7 and 10 days treatment. On the other hand, statistically significant percentages of sperm morphological abnormalities were recorded. Such percentage reached 8.10 ± 0.55, 9.86 ± 0.63 and 12.12 ± 0.58 at the three time intervals tested(7, 14 and 35 days after the 1 st treatment respectively)(treatment performed for 5 successive days) compared with 2.78 ± 0.48 for the control. The results also revealed histopathological changes in different body organs after AC treatment which increased with the prolongation of the period of therapy. Congestion of central vain, liver hemorrhage and hydropic changes in hepatocytes were noticed in the liver. Degenerative changes were found in kidney glomerulus and tubules while testis showed atrophy of seminiferous tubules, and reduction of spermatogenesis. AC also induced neurotoxicity and altered brain neurotransmitter levels. Hemorrhage in the myocardium, disruption of cardiac muscle fibers and pyknotic nuclei in cardiomyocytes were recorded as side effects of AC in heart ***: The results concluded that AC treatment induced sperm morphological abnormalities and histopathological changes in different body organs. Clinicians must be aware of such results while describing the drug.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are persistent organic pollutants of concern be-cause of their ubiquitous presence in surface and ground water;analytical methods that can be used for rapid comprehensive exposure assessment and fingerprinting of PFAS are *** the fires at the Intercontinental Terminals Company(ITC)in Deer Park,TX in 2019,large quantities of PFAS-containing firefighting foams were *** release of these substances into the Houston Ship Channel/Galveston Bay(HSC/GB)prompted con-cerns over the extent and level of PFAS contamination.A targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS)-based study of temporal and spatial patterns of PFAS associated with this incident revealed presence of 7 species;their levels gradually de-creased over a 6-month *** the targeted LC-MS/MS analysis was focused on about 30 PFAS molecules,it may have missed other PFAS compounds present in firefighting ***,we utilized untargeted LC-ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrome-try(LC-IMS-MS)-based analytical approach for a more comprehensive characterization of PFAS in these water *** analyzed 31 samples from 9 sites in the HSC/GB that were collected over 5 months after the *** data showed that additional 19 PFAS were detected in surface water of HSC/GB,most of them decreased gradually after the *** features detected by LC-MS/MS correlated well in abundance with LC-IMS-MS data;however,LC-IMS-MS identified a number of additional PFAS,many known to be compo-nents of firefighting *** findings therefore illustrate that untargeted LC-IMS-MS improved our understanding of PFAS presence in complex environmental samples.

A new homologous series of thermotropic liquid crystalline copoly(arylidene-ether)s based on 4-teriary butyl cyclohexanone moiety were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 4,4’-diformyl-α,ω-diphenoxyalkanes, Ia-d or 4,4’- diformyl-2,2’-dimethoxy-α,ω-diphenoxyalkanes IIa-d with the 4-teriary butyl-cyclohexanone III and cyclopentanone. A model compound IV was synthesized from the monomer III with benzaldehyde and characterized by elemental and spectral analyses. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polymers were in the range 0.22 - 0.92 dI/g. All the copoly(arylidene-ether)s were insoluble in common organic solvents but dissolved completely in concentrated H2SO4 and formic acid. The mesomorphic properties of these polymers were studied as a function of the diphenoxyalkane space length. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were examined by DSC and optical polarizing microscopy and demonstrated that the resulting polymers form nematic mesophases over wide temperature ranges. The thermogravimetric analyses of those polymers were evaluated by TGA and DSC measurements and correlated to their structural units. X-Ray analysis showed that copolymers having some degree of crystallinity in the region 2q = 5° -60°. In addition, the morphological properties of selected examples were tested by Scanning electron microscopy.

Application of Modified Bagasse as a Biosorbent for Reactive Dyes Removal from Industrial Wastewater

Propionic acid modified bagasse was used for the removal of reactive yellow 2 and reactive blue 4. The effects of pH, contact time, initial dye concentrations, adsorbent particle size and adsorbent dose on the adsorption of the two dyes were investigated. Additionally, the desorption process and intra-particle diffusion were studied. Acidic pH values were favorable for adsorption of both dyes. The equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with the Freundlich isotherm for reactive yellow 2 and the Langmiur isotherm for reactive blue 4. The values of their corresponding constants were determined. The kinetic for dye adsorption is well described by a pseudo-first order kinetic model for the reactive yellow 2 and by pseudo-second order for the reactive blue 4. The investigation revealed that the hydroxyl groups of bagasse and the carboxylic group of propionic acid play a great role in the removal of both reactive dyes.

Optimization of Diesel and Crude Oil Degradation in a Ghanaian Soil Using Organic Wastes as Amendment

Soil contamination by hydrocarbons poses numerous environmental, health and agricultural problems. The degradation of these pollutants can occur naturally but very slowly. It is therefore generally necessary to stimulate this degradation by different means. Thus, this study aimed to improve the bio-degradation of diesel and crude oil in a Ghanaian soil by biostimulation. For this, the sampled soil was characterized by standard methods and contaminated with diesel and crude oil at a proportion of 1% (w/w). Then, contaminated soil samples were supplemented with biochar-compost, poultry manure or cow dung at the proportion of 10% (w/w). Periodically, fractions of these samples were taken to evaluate the density of hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria (HUB) and the residual quantities of diesel or crude oil. The characteristics of the soil used show the need for supplementation for better degradation of hydrocarbons. The results of the study show that supplementing the soil with organic substrates increases HUB loads in soils contaminated by diesel and crude oil. They also show that the residual quantities of diesel and crude oil are generally significantly lower in supplemented soils (p = 0.048 and p < 0.0001 respectively). In addition, the study shows that degradation was generally greater in soils contaminated by diesel compared to those contaminated by crude oil, especially at the end of the study.

The main objective of this paper is to study the removal of Cadmium(II), Lead(II), Chromium(VI), and Mercury(II) ions by sorption onto different natural and synthetic nanoparticles. Special attention has been given to the application of fish bone in nanoform as a useful, inexpensive and eco-friendly alternative material. A comparison between natural hydroxyapatite (fish bone), synthetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAP) and alginate-hydroxyapatite composite (Alg/Hap) to assess their removal efficiencies to remediate the selected heavy metals has been done. Surface characterization by using different techniques has also been performed to understand the influence of surface characteristics of the adsorbent materials in the removal process. Different parameters (pH, contact time, mass dose and metal ion concentration) have been examined to identify the optimum conditions for remediation of different metals from polluted water. The potential applications of the biosorbents for removal and sorption of these metal ions from seawater and wastewater samples were also investigated and evaluated.

Characterization of Some Hydrogels Used in Water Purification: Correlation of Swelling and Free-Volume Properties

In this study, the main objective is to develop a good chelation and ion exchange hydrogel. This hydrogel is obtained by polymerization of dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and acrylic acid (AAc) by gamma irradiation, for the purpose of separation of some heavy and toxic metals from water. UV spectroscopy is applied to determine the metal ion concentration before and after treatment. The FTIR spectral analysis has identified the bond structure of PAAc, DMAEMA and P (DMAEMA/AAc) hydrogels. Microstructure and nanostructure are investigated by means of SEM and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) respectively. A maximum swelling percent is found for 80/20 DMAEMA/AAc at free-volume hole size and fraction of 97?3 and 3.4% respectively. The P (DMAEMA/AAc) and PAAc hydrogels have been applied for Cu+2, Co+2 and Ni+2 removals from aqueous solutions, and the factors affecting the adsorption capacity are determined. The adsorption capacity of P (DMAEMA/AAc) is found to be higher than the corresponding ones PAAc. Its experimental results showed that, the maximum adsorption of P (DMAEMA/AAc) after 24 h occurs at pH 7 with concentration of 250 ppm for Ni+2 ions and at pH 5 with concentration of 40 ppm for Cu+2 and Co+2 ions. The adsorption affinity of P (DMAEMA/AAc) hydrogel at different treatment contact times is in the following order Ni > Cu > Co. However, the order becomes Co > Ni > Cu by the variation of the pH of the metal ion solution;the variation of its concentration leads to a different order of Cu > Co > Ni.

In this paper full-energy peak (photopeak) efficiency and photopeak attenuation coefficient of 3'' × 3'' NaI(Tl) well-type scintillation detector were calculated using gamma-rayisotropic radiating point sources (with photon energy: 0.245, 0.344, 0.662, 0.779, 0.964, 1.1732, 1.333 and 1.408 MeV) placed outside the detector well. These energies were obtained from 152Eu, 137Cs and 60Co. The relations between the full energy peak efficiency and photopeak attenuation coefficients, were plotted vs. photon energy at different sources to detector distance, and it found that the full energy peak efficiency decreased by increasing the distance between the source and the detector.
