Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced under oxidative stress, such as high oxygen concentration and during the metabolic consumption of oxygen molecules. Male reproductive tissues appear to be continuously exposed to ROS produced by active metabolism. In addition, spermatozoa must pass through a high oxygen environment during the mating process. Thus, to maintain viable reproductive ability, a protective mechanism against oxidative stress is of importance. Here, we overview our current understanding of the cooperative function of antioxidative and redox systems that are involved in male fertility. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase are major enzymes that scavenge harmful ROS in male reproductive organs. In turn, glutathione and thioredoxin systems constitute the main redox systems that repair oxidized and damaged molecules and also play a role in regulating a variety of cellular functions. While glutathione functions as an antioxidant by donating electrons to glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin donates electrons to peroxiredoxin as a counterpart of glutathione peroxidase. In addition, aldo-keto reductases, which detoxify carbonyl compounds produced by oxidative stress, are present at high levels in the epithelia of the genital tract and Sertoli cells of the testis. Since these systems are involved in cross-talk, a comprehensive understanding will be required to maintain the physiological functions of male reproductive system.

Metabolic syndrome is a long-term complication of systemic chemotherapy for testicular germ cell tumor(TGCT).It is believed to be caused by secondary hypogonadism or toxic medicines because of orchidectomy followed by systemic *** this study,changes in the body composition of patients over time were quantitatively analyzed up to 24 months after *** study retrospectively analyzed 44 patients with TGCT who underwent chemotherapy at our institution from January 2008 to December *** and visceral fat areas and psoas and skeletal muscle areas were measured by computed tomography before and immediately after chemotherapy as well as 3 months,6 months,12 months,and 24 months after *** subcutaneous and visceral fat indices and psoas and skeletal muscle indices were calculated as each area divided by body height *** total fat area had already significantly increased 3 months after the initiation of chemotherapy(P=0.004).However,it did not return to prechemotherapeutic levels even at 24 months after *** skeletal muscle area was significantly decreased at the end of chemotherapy(P<0.001);however,the value returned to baseline within 12 *** multivariable analysis,the prechemotherapeutic skeletal muscle index and number of chemotherapy cycles were independently associated with the reduction of skeletal muscle at the end of chemotherapy(P=0.001 and P=0.027,respectively).In patients with TGCT,skeletal muscle mass decreased during chemotherapy and recovered within 12 months,whereas fat mass progressively increased from the initiation of chemotherapy until 24 months after chemotherapy.

Purpose: To report the clinical and histopathological features of malignant eyelid tumor cases treated in our clinic. We also compared the differences in the frequency of malignant eyelid tumor in various regions of Japan and worldwide. Methods: Retrospectively, we studied the records of the 38 cases of malignant eyelid tumor treated in yamagata university Hospital over the last 17 years. The statistical comparison with various countries was based on reports of case studies in those countries. Results: Data from our clinic: Among the total of 38 cases, 15 cases (39.5% )were diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma, 11 cases (28.9% ) as sebaceous gland carcinoma, and 4 cases (10.5% ) as squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, three cases were malignant melanoma, two adenocarcinoma, one Merkel cell carcinoma, one malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and one malignant lymphoma. The ages of patients ranged from 45 to 92 years (mean, 72.0 ± 12.4 years). Most of the cases were treated by complete resection of the tumors and eyelid reconstruction. Radiation or cryotherapy were added when required. The prognosis of the cases with basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma was good, and that of the other tumors was relatively poor. During the same period, in Caucasians, basal cell carcinoma constituted about 80% - 90% of the malignant eyelid tumors, whereas in Japan and Asian countries, basal cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma each constituted about 20% - 40% . Conclusions: A racial difference in the incidence of basal cell carcinoma, sebaceous gland carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma can be considered in making a diagnosis.

State Predictive Model Following Control System for Linear Time Delays

In this paper, we propose a new state predictive model following control system （MFCS）. The considered system has linear time delays. With the MFCS method, we obtain a simple input control law. The bounded property of the internal states for the control is given and the utility of this control design is guaranteed. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of male infertility; it damages spermatogenic cells, the spermatogenic process and sperm function. Recent advances in redox biology have revealed the signalling role of reactive oxygen species （ROS） that are generated by cells. While highly reactive oxidants, such as the hydroxyl radical, exert largely deleterious effects, hydrogen peroxide can feasibly serve as a signal mediator because it is moderately reactive and membrane permeable and because it can oxidize only limited numbers of functional groups of biological molecules. The amino acid side chain most sensitive to oxidation is cysteine sulphydryl, which is commonly involved in the catalysis of some enzymes. Although the reactivity of cysteine sulphhydryl is not very high in ordinary proteins, some phosphatases possess a highly reactive sulphydryl group at their catalytic centre and are thereby oxidatively inactivated by transiently elevated hydrogen peroxide levels after extracellular stimuli and under certain environmental conditions. Peroxiredoxins, in turn, show moderate hydrogen peroxide-reducing activity, and their role in the modulation of ROS-mediated signal transduction in ordinary cells, mediated by protecting phosphatases from oxidative inactivation, has attracted much attention. Although knowledge of the signalling role of ROS in the male reproductive system is limited at present, its significance is becoming a focal issue. Here, we present a review of the emerging signalling role of hydrogen peroxide in testes.
