Authigenic clay minerals and calcite dissolution influence reservoir quality in tight sandstones:Insights from the central Junggar Basin,NW China

Authigenic clays and calcite cements are important in the development of reservoir tightness and the formation of hydrocarbon sweet *** investigated Jurassic low-permeability sandstone reservoirs in the central Junggar Basin,NW China,using petrography,mineralogy,porosity,and permeability assessment,and stable C and O isotope analysis to ascertain the influence of authigenic clays and calcites on reservoir ***,we establish the properties and diagenetic processes of the reservoir sandstones,and construct a generalizable model of reservoir *** results show that the sandstones are mainly litharenite and feldspathic litharenite and can be classified into ductile-lithic-rich sandstones and ductile-lithic-poor sandstones according to rock *** ductile-lithic-rich sandstones are tight(mean porosity?7.31%;mean permeability?0.08 mD)as a result of intense *** contrast,the ductile-lithic-poor sandstones can be classified into five types according to diagenetic *** formation of favorable hydrocarbon reservoir properties is closely related to the presence of authigenic clays and dissolution of *** particular,kaolinite fills intergranular pores,thereby blocking pore space and reducing reservoir *** coating resists compaction and limits the formation of quartz overgrowths,thereby preserving pore space and enhancing reservoir *** controls reservoir quality through both precipitation and *** precipitation results in reduced reservoir quality,whereby early calcites that were precipitated in formation water resist compaction and provide the basis for subsequent dissolution and late precipitation,whereas dissolution of calcite in mesodiagenesis improves reservoir quality.A generalized model is formulated by relating diagenetic facies types to depth and porosity,providing a reference for other similar *** data suggest that deeply buried tight sandstones can be exploration prospec

Study on the influence of fracture lengths and fracture angles on residual oil distribution based on the slab model

After fracturing in the pilot area,channeling occurs at a low fracture angle(15).Based on the resistance-water saturation relationship,three-dimensional physical simulation methods are used in the laboratory to study the effect of different fracture angles and lengths on the residual oil distribution during the displacement ***,recovery percent,displacement efficiency and expanding sweep co-efficient to the improvement of recovery percent are also *** results show that the fracture angle and length are closely related to the oil saturation distribution in these *** the fracture angle increases,the sweep coefficient decreases(0.2412→0.1463),and the recovery percent also in-creases(46.16→56.88%),but the extent of increase has been reduced(7.96→2.96%).The extension of the fracture length is more prone to have a cross-flow phenomenon;the sweep coefficient is reduced(0.2412→0.1463).Compared to the model with 1/2 oil-water well spacing,the recovery percent is decreased by 14.29%.In different fracture models,the increasable sweep coefficient has a greater impact on oil recovery than the increasable displacement efficiency(71.30→28.70%).

Water Role and Its Influence on Hydrogen Isotopic Composition of Natural Gas during Gas Generation

In order to discuss the role and influence of water during the generation of natural gas,the participation mechanism of water during the evolution of organic matter and its influences were *** addition,we carried out an anhydrous cracking experiment of oil extracted from the Feixianguan Formation source rock in a closed system,which led to the establishment of the kinetic models for describing carbon and hydrogen isotopic fractionation during gas generation from organic *** models were calibrated and then applied to the northeastern Sichuan *** combining a series of gas generation experiments from octadecane pyrolysis without water or with distilled water in varying mass proportions,several results were proved:(1) the hydrogen isotopic composition of natural gas becomes lighter with the participation of formation water;(2) we can quantitatively study the hydrogen isotopic fractionation with the kinetic model for describing carbon isotopic fractionation; (3) more abundant and reliable geological information can be obtained through the combined application of carbon and hydrogen isotopic indices.

Calculation of depth to detachment and its significance in the Kuqa Depression:A discussion

We analyze the excess area and depth to detachment method developed by Epard and Groshong （1993）, and apply it to the sand box model of Ge et al （2004） to illustrate that inadequate consideration will affect the calculation of true depth to detachment. Using the data of Yu et al （2006） to fit linear regression lines, we obtain the depths to detachment of Kela-2, Misikantage anticline and Dongqiu-8 structures, 115.74km, 14.17km, and 75.48km below the reference level （Cretaceous bottom） respectively with the excess area intercept equal to zero. However, the calculation results of depth to detachment in Yu et al （2006） are based on excess area intercept unequal to zero.

The values of grains containing oil inclusions(GOI) in 120 reservoir sandstone samples from the central Junggar Basin of Northwest China were *** sandstones are characterized by different types of hydrocarbon production and *** values range from 0.015%to 19.9%,and show a fairly good correlation with the hydrocarbon production/shows,which are qualitatively suggestive of reservoir hydrocarbon abundance and petroleum ***,it may be implied that the values can reflect hydrocarbon migration,being not controlled mainly by the other influencing *** correlation between the values and the reservoir hydrocarbon production and show types indicates that the GOI method can be used in hydrocarbon migration study when the petroleum type of a reservoir is normal oil or gas alone,but it should be used with caution when light oil charges the reservoirs or a complex hydrocarbon migration event takes *** case study in the central Junggar Basin using the method presents some new understanding on hydrocarbon ***, the method may help to solve specific petroleum geological problems,and can be treated as a routine tool in hydrocarbon migration study.

Effect of gravel on rock failure in glutenite reservoirs under different confining pressures

Due to the existence of gravel,glutenite is heterogeneous and different from fine-grained rocks such as sandstone and shale in *** fully understand the effect of gravel on failure mode in glutenite,we performed triaxial compression tests on different *** results indicate that failure modes of glutenite are complex due to the existence of *** different confining pressures,three failure modes were *** first failure mode,a tensile failure under uniaxial compression,produces multiple tortuous longitudinal *** this failure mode,the interaction between gravels provides the lateral tensile stress for rock *** second failure mode occurs under low and medium confining pressure and produces a crack band composed of micro-cracks around *** failure mode conforms to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion and is generated by shear *** this failure mode,shear dilatancy and shear compaction may occur under different confining pressures to produce different crack band *** the second failure mode,gravel-induced stress concentration produces masses of initial micro-cracks for shear cracking,and gravels deflect the fracture *** a result,the fracture is characterized by crack bands that are far broader than in fine-grained *** third failure mode requires high confining pressure and produces disconnected cracks around gravels without apparent crack *** this failure mode,the gravel rarely breaks,indicating that the formation of these fractures is related to the deformation of the *** third failure mode requires lower confining pressure in glutenite with weak cement and matrix ***,unlike fine-grained rocks,the failure mode of glutenite is not only controlled by confining pressure but also by the *** failure of glutenite is characterized by producing cracks around *** cracks are produced by different mechanisms and distributed in different manners under different confining

A novel polymer gel with high-temperature and high-salinity resistance for conformance control in carbonate reservoirs

Plugging agents have been widely used to enhance oil recovery in fractured-vuggy carbonate ***,the harsh conditions of fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs yield a significant challenge in maintaining a long-term stabilization of plugging *** this work,we developed an anti-hightemperature and high-salinity polymer gel(APG)with excellent resistance to high temperature(140℃)and ultra-high salinity(240000 mg/L).The rheology and microstructure of APG were characterized before and after *** plugging tests on fractured cubic cores were conducted to quantify the plugging performance of the gel *** results showed that the Sclerglucan and Cobalt(Ⅱ)Chloride Hexahydrate filled the three-dimensional(3-D)network with various morphologies,providing extra protection to the cross-linking points of the 3D network structure of APG and thus,leading to a prolongation of the dehydration *** dehydration rate of APG was only 5%within 30days,and the strength of APG could be maintained at a rigid or near-rigid level over 150 ***,APG exhibited satisfactory shear and scour *** plugging tests showed that APG could achieve a plugging rate of 90%and demonstrate ignorable minor damage to the *** results indicate that APG can serve as a great candidate in channel plugging in fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs where fractures are fully developed.

Tight reservoirs are typically developed by horizontal wells and multi-stage hydraulic *** conglomerate reservoir is one type of tight reservoirs,which is different from homogeneous rock,such as tight *** is because that the existence of gravels makes conglomerate have strong ***,it is difficult to grasp the fracture mechanism and the law of fracture propagation of conglomerate,which limits the efficient development of the conglomerate *** this paper,the fracture characteristics and factors influencing the fracturing of Mahu conglomerate were studied by uniaxial compression,acoustic emission monitoring and X-ray computed tomography(CT)scanning *** results show that the fracture characteristics of conglomerates are influenced by the gravel content and *** conglomerate in the study area is mainly divided into carbonate cemented conglomerate and clay cemented *** fracture complexity of carbonate cemented conglomerate first increases and then decreases with increasing gravel ***,for clay cemented conglomerates,the fracture complexity increases over the gravel *** crack development stress is a significant parameter in the crack assessment of *** study is useful to understand the influence of meso-fabric characteristics of conglomerates on their fracturing and crack evolution and guides the design of hydraulic fracturing.

Erosion characteristics and simulation charts of sand fracturing casing perforation

Large-scale sand fracturing is a necessary means in the efficient exploitation of shale gas/***,in the process of fracturing operation,the sand carrying fluid and proppant easily causes scouring and wear to production strings,especially the casing perforation system,which damage the wellbore integrity and deformation to affect the subsequent *** this problem,taking the actual construction conditions and perforation technology of an oilfield in western China as an example,the structural parameters of the downhole string were measured and the wall thickness reduction model of casing perforation suitable for large-displacement sand fracturing in horizontal well section was *** software ANSYS-FLUENT,the casing perforation erosion under the conditions of different displacements,sand content and perforation sand-passing quantity in the process of sand fracturing was simulated and *** influences of three parameters on perforation erosion and expansion were analyzed and the prediction chart of the influences of three main control factors on perforation erosion and expansion was *** perforation erosion images after fracturing construction were obtained with the downhole eagle perforation logging *** logging chart results were compared with the downhole eagle perforation *** error between the established numerical simulation calculation charts and the real logging data was about 5%,indicating that the simulation charts were the valuable reference.
