Soil loss through erosion continues to pose serious challenges to increasing the smallholder agricultural productivity in Sierra Leone. While emphasis on sustainable land use practices continue to gain attention among land users, however, the rate of adoption among smallholder farmers is still very low and hence, in most part of the country soil fertility has been declining at alarming rates. In the Njala area, studies have shown that soil loss ranges from moderate to high. Though soil erosion has been identified as a major soil fertility declining factor, however, the effect of land use practices on the inherent resistance of soil materials to erosion is lacking. This study was therefore conducted to assess the effect of land uses on soil erodibility. The results showed that the soils are coarse sandy loam with high sand content. The dispersion ratios and erosion indices of soils under cassava, plantain, maize and guava were above the minimum thresholds of 15.0 and 10.0 respectively, thus indicating that these soils are highly erodible compared to soils under fallow and sweet potato which have dispersion ratios and erosion indices below the minimum thresholds. Clay content was inversely proportional to and significantly correlated with dispersion ratio and erosion index while the correlations between silt + clay, dispersion ration and erosion index, and silt, silt + clay and dispersion ratio were negative and non-significant. Considering the coarse nature of soils, landscape features and high erodibility indices, these soils would need special soil and water conservation practices to counter further degradation. These may include following, agroforestry, silvi-pasture, controlled and rotational grazing. In addition, awareness of sense of self-responsibility and forest policies and regulations are needed.

TEC是电子密度沿路径的积分,根据一定的模式假设,可以将沿倾斜路径的TEC观测转化为星下点位置的垂直TEC。最常用的假设是背景电离层为单层薄层薄模型假设,使用仰角的三角函数作为映射函数可以方便地实现倾斜TEC向垂直TEC的转换,这种方法在电离层研究中被广泛应用。但是,实际的电离层结构并不满足这种假设,它不仅有垂直方向上的分层结构,而且存在赤道异常及中纬槽等不规则结构,同时还有明显的地方时变化。上述假设只是一种粗略的近似处理手段,采用上述假设将倾斜TEC转换为垂直TEC时会带来一定的误差,这种误差在低仰角时更为明显。因此,需要发展一种新的方法来减小垂直TEC转换过程中的误差。国际参考电离层模型可以描述电离层主要参量随时间的变化和空间的变化特征,我们利用IRI2012模型在不同条件下输出的全球电子密度数据,基于经验正交函数(EOF)分析法提取了电子密度的EOF基函数和系数,得到的EOF基函数能反映出每阶EOF基上的电子密度随磁纬、磁地方时和高度的分布,从而实现将IRI模型参量化的目的。在此基础上,计算电子密度沿GNSS TEC所有观测路径的积分,根据最小二乘法拟合出相应的系数,进而将这个系数应用于全球垂直TEC的估计,获得网格化的全球TEC,同时还能获得全球电子密度的估计。本文的方法考虑了电离层的基本结构,相比于单层薄层模型假设,它能有效改善低仰角时的不利情况,甚至还能利用无线电掩星观测,进一步提高估计的精度。

美国的心血管健康差异状况

Background -Reducing health disparities remains a major public health challenge in the United States. Having timely access to current data on disparities is important for policy and program development. Accordingly, we assessed the current magnitude of disparities in cardiovascular disease(CVD) and its risk factors in the United States. Methods and Results -Using national surveys, we determined CVD and risk factor prevalence and indexes of morbidity, mortality, and overall quality of life in adults ≥18 years of age by race/ethnicity, sex, education level, socioeconomic status, and geographic location. Disparities were common in all risk factors examined. In men, the highest prevalence of obesity(29.2%) was found in Mexican Americans who had completed a high school education. Black women with or without a high school education had a high prevalence of obesity(47.3%). Hypertension prevalence was high among blacks(39.8%) regardless of sex or educational status. Hypercholesterolemia was high among white and Mexican American men and white women in both groups of educational status. Ischemic heart disease and stroke were inversely related to education, income, and poverty status. Hospitalization was greater in men for total heart disease and acute myocardial infarction but greater in women for congestive heart failure and stroke. Among Medicare enrollees, congestive heart failure hospitalization was higher in blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians/Alaska Natives than among whites, and stroke hospitalization was highest in blacks. Hospitalizations for congestive heart failure and stroke were highest in the southeastern United States. Life expectancy remains higher in women than men and higher in whites than blacks by ≈5 years. CVD mortality at all ages tended to be highest in blacks. Conclusions -Disparities in CVD and related risk factors remain pervasive. The data presented here can be invaluable for policy development and in the planning, implementation, and evaluation

背景尽管肺药物敏感结核(DS-TB)和耐多药结核(MDR-TB)的诊断需要微生物检查证实,但胸部影像学早期识别可疑MDR-TB可以对诊断过程提供指引。本文对文献资料中与MDR-TB相关的放射学征象进行分析。方法于2018年1月29日搜索PubMed数据库,搜索关键字组合为"((extensive drug resistant tuberculosis)OR(multidrug-resistant tuberculosis))AND(CT or radiograph or imaging or X-ray or computed tomography)",并分析了报道DS-TB和MDR-TB放射学征象的英文文献。结果我们发现和分析了与分析目的有充分相关性的17篇文章。我们将报告的肺MDR-TB病例分为四个类别:(1)之前治疗过(继发或获得性)的HIV阴性成人MDRTB;(2)新发(或原发)HIV阴性成人MDR-TB;(3)HIV阳性成人MDR-TB;(4)儿童MDR-TB。肺MDR-TB的常见放射学表现包括:小叶中央小结节、分枝状线征和结节影(树芽征)、斑块或叶实变、空洞和支气管扩张。虽然总体上MDR-TB病例倾向病变更广泛、更容易双侧发病、胸膜受累、支气管扩张,及肺体积缩小;但仅依据这些征象难以作出MDR-TB的鉴别诊断。迄今的文献提示,肺MDR-TB特异性较高的放射学征象是厚壁多发空洞病变(特别是空洞≥3个时),虽然可能其敏感性不高。对于成人HIV阴性患者,与继发MDR-TB一致,新发MDR-TB也往往有较高的空洞病变发生率,估计在70%左右。结论厚壁多发空洞病变是提示MDR-TB诊断最有意义的放射学征象。未来的研究应该细致地量化空洞病变形态特征。

The complexity of multi-dimensional climate, environmental and human health information complicates bringing together scientists, civil society, and decision makers to provide adequate mitigation and adaptation options for the consequences of global environmental change. To provide an effective pathway to conciliate (integrate) these datasets, we present PULSE-Brazil as the Platform for Understanding Long-term Sustainability of Ecosystems and human health. The overarching aim of this paper is to focus on two study cases in the Brazilian state of Acre, 1) analyzing recent socio-environmental disasters such as the impacts of droughts and consequent increases in fire detections on the incidence of respiratory diseases, and 2) evaluating the impacts of temperature increases in combination with rainfall seasonality upon the incidence of Dengue fever. Based on data available in PULSE-Brazil platform, we also aim to provide insights on the consequences of future climate variability on ecosystems and human health. Finally, we provide a discussion on the collaborative process between scientists and policymakers that defined the PULSE-Brazil platform specifications and datasets and propose a conceptual pathway for promoting the interaction between science and policy during the process of producing a tool that allows the understating of climate-relate processes. Our results clearly demonstrated that ecosystems are under increased fire risk in the future that will, in turn, affect the health of human populations. Moreover, humans are also exposed to critical Dengue fever outbreaks with the projected increase in minimum temperatures. Therefore, minimizing the impacts of these potentially ascending socio-environmental problems is the first step for adapting to a changing climate in the Amazon region. Objective: Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) development among hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) carriers shows gender disparity, influenced by underlying liver diseases that display variations in laboratory tests. We aimed to construct a risk-stratified HCC prediction model for HBs Ag-positive male ***: HBs Ag-positive males of 35-69 years old(N=6,153) were included from a multi-center populationbased liver cancer screening study. Randomly, three centers were set as training, the other three centers as validation. Within 2 years since initiation, we administrated at least two rounds of HCC screening using Bultrasonography and α-fetoprotein(AFP). We used logistic regression models to determine potential risk factors,built and examined the operating characteristics of a point-based algorithm for HCC risk ***: With 2 years of follow-up, 302 HCC cases were diagnosed. A male-ABCD algorithm was constructed including participant's age, blood levels of GGT(γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase), counts of platelets, white cells,concentration of DCP(des-γ-carboxy-prothrombin) and AFP, with scores ranging from 0 to 18.3. The area under receiver operating characteristic was 0.91(0.90-0.93), larger than existing models. At 1.5 points of risk score,26.10% of the participants in training cohort and 14.94% in validation cohort were recognized at low risk, with sensitivity of identifying HCC remained 100%. At 2.5 points, 46.51% of the participants in training cohort and 33.68% in validation cohort were recognized at low risk with 99.06% and 97.78% of sensitivity, respectively. At 4.5 points, only 20.86% of participants in training cohort and 23.73% in validation cohort were recognized at high risk,with positive prediction value of 22.85% and 12.35%, ***: Male-ABCD algorithm identified individual's risk for HCC occurrence within short term for their HCC precision surveillance.

The recent realistic estimate of fungal numbers which used various algorithms was between 2.2 and 3.8 *** are nearly 100,000 accepted species of Fungi and fungus-like taxa,which is between 2.6 and 4.5%of the estimated *** forums such as Botanica Marina series,Fungal Diversity notes,Fungal Biodiversity Profiles,Fungal Systematics and Evolution-New and Interesting Fungi,Mycosphere notes and Fungal Planet have enhanced the introduction of new taxa and nearly 2000 species have been introduced in these publications in the last *** need to define a fungal species more accurately has been recognized,but there is much research needed before this can be better *** address the evidence that is needed to estimate the numbers of fungi and address the various advances that have been made towards its *** genera are barely known,whereas some plant pathogens comprise numerous species complexes and numbers are steadily *** this paper,we examine ten genera as case studies to establish trends in fungal description and introduce new species in each *** genera are the ascomycetes Colletotrichum and Pestalotiopsis(with many species or complexes),Atrocalyx,Dothiora,Lignosphaeria,Okeanomyces,Rhamphoriopsis,Thozetella,Thyrostroma(rela-tively poorly studied genera)and the basidiomycete genus *** provide examples where knowledge is incomplete or lacking and suggest areas needing further *** include(1)the need to establish what is a species,(2)the need to establish how host-specific fungi are,not in highly disturbed urban areas,but in pristine or relatively undisturbed forests,and(3)the need to establish if species in different continents,islands,countries or regions are different,or if the same fungi occur worldwide?Finally,we conclude whether we are anywhere near to flattening the curve in new species description.
