How sensory neurons encode axonal injury signals has been a longstanding area of neurological *** into the cellular and transcriptional changes in the injured neurons have driven many new therapeutic strategies to improve *** contrast,less focus has been centered on the systemic or transneuronal changes that may arise from these injuries and how they may impact or factor into the alterations in gene expression,physiology and neuropathology,such as mirror image pain,arising in regions either directly contralateral or those remote to the injury *** in this area is clinically *** patients with chronic unilateral pain due to multiple pathologies,many of which involve nerve trauma,there is a very high incidence of bilateral sensory abnormalities reported with 33–50%of patients with mechanical abnormalities reporting contralateral sensory abnormalities(Konopka et al.,2012).This has implications when evaluating sensory abnormalities or pain states in patients,as the contralateral side is often used as the non-affected ***,the bilateral nature of these sensory abnormalities,albeit usually less severe on the contralateral side,support that a systemic or central nervous system component is involved in this aspect of the *** highlights the need to better understand the mechanisms underlying these bilateral responses as this will likely impact therapeutic treatments for these patients.

Background and Objective: HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are very widespread in the world, however, less than 20% of the people affected are diagnosed and treated. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HIV, HCV and HBV co-infections in pregnant women at Bangui Community University Hospital and the cost of screening. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving consenting pregnant women who came for antenatal care was performed. HIV, HCV antibodies and HBV antigens were detected using Exacto Triplex? HIV/HCV/HBsAg rapid test, cross-validated by ELISA tests. Sociodemographic and professional data, the modes of transmission and prevention of HIV and both hepatitis viruses were collected in a standard sheet and analyzed using the Epi-Info software version 7. Results: Pregnant women aged 15 to 24 were the most affected (45.3%);high school girls (46.0%), and pregnant women living in cohabitation (65.3%) were the most represented. Twenty-five (16.7%) worked in the formal sector, 12.7% were unemployed housewives and the remainder in the informal sector. The prevalence of HIV, HBV, and HCV viruses was 11.8%, 21.9% and 22.2%, respectively. The prevalence of co-infections was 8.6% for HIV-HBV, 10.2% for HIV-HCV, 14.7% for HBV-HCV and 6.5% for HIV-HBV-HCV. All positive results and 10% of negative results by the rapid test were confirmed by ELISA tests. The serology of the three viruses costs 39,000 FCFA (60 Euros) by ELISA compared to 10,000 FCFA (15.00 Euros) with Exacto Triplex? HIV/HCV/AgHBs (BioSynex, Strasbourg, France). Conclusion: The low level of education and awareness of hepatitis are barriers to development and indicate the importance of improving the literacy rate of women in the Central African Republic (CAR). Likewise, the high prevalence of the three viruses shows the need for the urgent establishment of a national program to combat viral hepatitis in the CAR.

Surviving a myocardial infarction (MI) can be a stressful event entailing challenges in daily life during the recovery period. Experiencing fatigue symptoms post-MI has been described as bothersome and occurs in nearly half of patients four months and two years after MI. The aetiology of fatigue disorder is unclear, but research has shown that fatigue plays an important role in the relationship between stress and perceived poor health. Previous findings indicate that having access to an easily administered stress measurement is worthwhile both in the clinic and in research. The single-item measure of stress symptoms has not been validated in persons treated for MI. The aim was to validate the single-item measure of stress symptoms and to explore its association with fatigue in a sample of persons treated for MI. Methods: 142 respondents completed the questionnaires of the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20, the single-item measure of stress symptoms and the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PPS-10) two months post-MI. Correlation analysis and t-tests were used to validate the single-item stress measure and its association with post-MI fatigue. Results: The convergent validity of the single-item measure of stress symptoms was confirmed. In analyses of relations between stress and fatigue, it was found that the single-item stress measure was strongly associated with both the global fatigue score and all four fatigue dimension scores (general, physical and mental fatigue as well as reduced activity). Conclusion: The single-item measure of stress symptoms was found to be a valid measure of post-MI stress. Also, the measure was useful in assessing associations between stress and fatigue and could therefore indicate that post-MI fatigue experiences should be further explored in full using multidimensional fatigue assessment.

Objective Evidence is lacking regarding the combined effects of smoking and obesity on mortality from coronary heart disease in male *** study aimed to explore the combined effect of smoking and obesity on coronary heart disease mortality in male veterans in *** A cohort of 1,268 male veterans from 22 veteran centers in Xi’an(Shaanxi Province,China)were followed up once every 2 years from February 1,1987 to October 30,*** endpoint was death from any *** hazard ratio(HR)of each risk factor and the 95%confidence interval(CI)were calculated using a multivariate Cox proportional hazard *** The total follow-up was 24394.21 person-years;each subject was followed up for a mean duration of 19.24 *** the end of the study,of the 1,268 veterans,889 had died,363 were alive,and 16 were lost to *** regression analysis results revealed that current smoking(HR:1.552,95%CI:1.074–2.243),obesity(HR:1.625,95%CI:1.024–2.581),and the combined effect of the two factors(HR:2.828,95%CI:1.520–5.262)were associated with coronary heart disease *** Our results suggest that obese veterans who smoke might be an important target population for coronary heart disease mortality control.

In order to investigate the mortality of a cohort of chrysotile asbestos miners in China and evaluate its association with exposure to chrysotile,a fixed cohort of 1932 workers in chrysotile asbes-tos mine was established in 1981 and followed till June 1,*** on vital status,cause of death and smoking habits was *** workers were divided into two groups according to their exposure *** exposed group was composed of frontline workers who worked directly on mining or processing asbestos *** control group consisted of those who were not directly exposed to asbestos in their *** mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated according to Chinese national death *** proportional hazards model was applied to estimate the adjusted relative risks of deaths from major causes in exposed and control *** results of this study showed that main causes of mortality were malignant neoplasm,cardiovascular disease,cerebrovascular disease and respiratory disease for chrysotile *** mortality rate was 939.20 per 100 000 person-years for *** SMR for all causes of death was 1.46 in the *** significant mortality excesses were found for lung cancer (SMR=1.51),pulmonary heart disease (SMR=2.70),respiratory disease (SMR=1.93),asbestosis (SMR=9.62),and accident (SMR=1.59).The mortalities from malignant neo-plasm,lung cancer,cerebrovascular disease and digestive disease in the exposed group were signifi-cantly higher than those in the control *** findings indicate that chrysotile exposure is a risk factor for lung cancer,respiratory disease,cerebrovascular disease and digestive disease.

Objective: To investigate the uptake rate of prostate specific antigen(PSA) testing among Hong Kong Chinese males aged 50 or above, and identify factors associated with the likelihood of undergoing a PSA ***: A population-based telephone survey was conducted in Hong Kong in 2007. The survey covered demographic information, perceived health status, use of complementary therapy, cancer screening behavior, perceived susceptibility to cancer and family history of cancer. Descriptive statistics, percentages and logistic regression analysis were used for data ***: A total of 1,002 men aged 50 or above took part in the study(response rate =67%), and the uptake rate of PSA testing was found to be 10%. Employment status, use of complementary therapy, perceiving regular visits to a doctor as good for health and the recommendations of health professionals were significant factors associated with PSA ***: The uptake rate of PSA testing in the study population was very low. Among all the factors identified, recommendations from health professionals had the strongest association with the uptake of PSA testing, and they should therefore take an active role in educating this population about cancer prevention and detection.
