Randomized Clinical Study, Comparative of Parallel Groups, to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Three Preparations of Potassium Citrate in Producing an Increase in Urinary pH in Patients with a History of Kidney Stones

Background: A very strict control of urinary pH is recommended to maintain it between 5.5 and 6.2, preventing formation or recurrence of crystals. Kidney stones are a common problem, with a high rate of recurrence, not altered by the success of surgery. Medical treatment prevents recurrence. Potassium Citrate inhibits crystallization of calcium salts. It influences calculogenesis by increasing urinary citrates and alkalinizing the urine. Purpose: to evaluate the similarity in the effect of three K citrate products, K citrate reference product Urocit®10 mEq, and K citrate from Laboratorios LETI S.A.V., 10 mEq and 15 mEq, on urinary pH. Materials and Methods: We carried out a prospective, randomized study of three parallel groups. We admitted female and male patients with history of kidney stones or evidence of lithiasis (grit, microlithiasis) in the renal echosonogram. Laboratory assessments: urine, 24-hour urine, urinary pH, Calcium, uric acid, Phosphorus, Sodium, protein and urinary creatinine at times: start, day 7, day 21, 30 of treatment. Results: all three products produced a slight increase in urinary pH in the simple urine test and 24-hour urine, with no differences between groups or their logarithmically transformed means and their CI95, which did not exceed the range between 80% and 125%. Conclusions: K Citrate, 10 mEq and 7.5 mEq, from Laboratorios LETI, S.A.V., at a dose of 30 mEq daily in patients with history of kidney stones are equivalent to the reference product Urocit®, in its effects on urinary pH in 24-hour urine, and in the simple urine test.

In this work we present the preparation and functionalization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of presence of gp63 glycoprotein in the surface of Leishmania genus parasites. AuNPs were prepared by induced laser ablation in a clean and biologically suitable media. The nanoparticles were functionalized with anti-gp63 lgG antibody in order to study the interaction with the glycoprotein component gp63 (63 kDa) present on the membrane surface of Leishmania genus parasites. The functionalized AuNPs showed potential as a spectrometric indicator of the parasite existence, both by the detection of the presence of the gp63 in solution and through the specific interaction with the parasites in vitro. The specificity of the study opens a new line of research on the use of modified nanoparticles in the development of a fast and easy assay for Leishmaniosis diagnostics.

Human papillomavirus in oral squamous cell carcinoma of a venezuelan population.

Purpose: It has been well established that tobacco and alcohol use are significant risk factors for the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma。In the last years, human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with the development of oral cancer。This study was performed to estimate the frequency of HPV DNA in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) at different sites of the oral cavity and to compare the clinical behavior of HPV positive and negative tumors。Methods: Twenty seven patients diagnosed with primary oral cancer were studied in relation to tumor HPV status。Results: HPV DNA was detected in 44.4% of tumors。With respect to age, gender, tobacco and alcohol consumption, site, grade and size of the tumor, analysis of clinical data showed no difference between patients with HPV DNA in their tumors and those in which no HPV was detected。However HPV positive patients had a more incidence of lymph node metastasis (P<0.05)。Conclusions: The presence of HPV DNA is only associated with more incidence of lymph node metastasis。

Ultrastructural Aspects of Apoptosis in Systemic Sclerosis Inflammatory Myopathy

Muscle biopsies from two female patients with systemic sclerosis (SS) and an inflammatory myopathy were studied ultrastructurally in relation to the possible presence of apoptosis in skeletal muscle fibers. Undergoing apoptosis showed characteristic morphological features of this process, including chromatin aggregation as well as nuclear and sarcoplasmic partition into membrane bound-vacuoles (apoptotic bodies) which contained autophagosomes, mitochondria, isolated myofilaments and nuclear material. Vacuoles exhibited different diameters and were covered by single membranes, appearing beneath basement membrane. Apoptosis occurred in some fiber segments as in necrosis or included whole atrophied fibers. These results indicate that apoptosis coexists with necrosis in the inflammatory myopathy of SS.

In this paper we establish the notion of the space of bounded ?(p(⋅), 2)variation in De la Vallée Poussin-Wiener’s sense with variable exponent. We show some properties of this space and we show that any uniformly bounded composition operator that maps this space into itself necessarily satisfies the so-called Matkowski’s conditions.

Objective: To determine the ultrastructural findings on Rectal Mucosa (RM) of patients with HIV/AIDS and anorectal pathologies (ARP), at micrometric and nanometric scales. Materials and methods: 5 patients were evaluated, 18 - 55 years old, with ARP (HIV co-infection with HPV, n = 4, and HIV-negative patient with HPV infection) (control n = 1), who were referred to the Coloproctology Unit of the HUC, and subjected to rectoscopy and biopsy. RM samples were identified, placed in a sterile plastic bottle with 1 mL of 2% glutaraldehyde and immediately transported for routine processing of fine cut (60 - 90 nm) to be evaluated via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). They were fixed with Karnovsky solution with Millonig phosphate buffer (pH 7.4 and 320 mOsm) and post-fixed with OsO4 under the same conditions of pH and osmolarity. Results: Ultrastructural findings, at 10−6 scale: 1) Intestinal mucosa: vacuoles of mucus of different sizes that seem to be fused. 2) Smooth muscle cells: loss of definition of contractile myofilaments mass. 3) Unmyelinated axons and terminals of Schwann cells (SC): Edema and loss of their plasma membranes in some areas of association with axon terminals as well as abundant collagen fibers associated with SC. Ultrastructural findings, at 10−9 scale: 1) Smooth muscle cells: folded wrapper cores and edema of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns (RER). 2) Myelinated axon terminals: Loss of synaptic vesicles. 3) Fibroblasts: One observes mitochondria and cisterns of RER with alterations. All these alterations can generate intestinal and anorectal dysfunction in these patients. Conclusions: The HIV causes changes in rectal and muscular mucosa despite HAART treatment with undetectable viral load.

This study aimed at the physical, chemical and biochemical changes during ripening of Sweetsop （Annona squamosa L.） and Golden Apple （Spondias citherea Sonner） fruits during ripening as important features to better understand their postharvest handling. It was carried out physical analysis such as firmness and chemical analysis such as total chlorophyll, total carotenoids, soluble solids, pectins and titrable acidity and biochemical analysis such as pectin methyl esterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase, and peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase activities in crude extract. Fruits were harvested at different stages of ripening. Experimental design was completely randomized and was carried out analysis of variance and Tukey tests, Total chlorophyll was decreasing in later stages of ripening, total soluble solid contents increased as the fruits ripen, while the acidity expressed percentage of citric acid decreased during fruits ripening. The loss of firmness and soluble solids content increased as the fruit get ripped stage, while the content of pectin decreased. Activity was observed for pectin methyl esterase and polygalacturonase enzymes during all stages of maturation, presenting the highest activity for both enzymes in the mature state. No cellulase activity detected at any stage during the ripening of these fruits. Activity of the enzyme polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase, associated with pulp browning was higher in the last stages of ripening of these fruits. Physical, chemical and biochemical patterns during ripening were different according to fruit species suggesting differential postharvest handling requirements.

This article presents a reflection on the existingrelationship between cinema as a technologicalinstrument in the service of education and thecreation of knowledge in teaching family violencecounseling. It researches the possibility of including films as a technological resource in education under two premises. On the one hand, a theoretical proposal is presented, including a discussion of the intersection among science, technology and cinema in education. On the other, an empirical case is deployed, including the utilization of cinema-discussion to generate significant knowledge in the formation of counselors in the family violence field. The paper proposes to build an outline to analyze movies as teaching resource. Furthermore, it is highlighted that the utilization of movies in the classroom could help teachers to diseminate the curricular contents in transversal ways and to help develop competencies that go beyond the acquisition of factual information in the field of family violencecounseling. The paper concludes stating that movies and their aftermath discussion could help in the creation of knowledge in teaching family violence counseling.

Interactions between a Root Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne exigua) and Arbuscular Mycorrhizae in Coffee Plant Development (Coffea arabica)

This paper focuses on parasitic root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne exigua) and how to decrease their pathogenic effect on coffee plants (Coffea arabica), by examining the behaviour of and the interactions between nematodes, coffee plant and arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM). The experiment was carried out at the seedling stage, with six (6) treatments (plants with M. exigua, plants with arbuscular mycorrhizae, plants with both organisms, and the same time, first mycorrhizae plants, then nematodes were inoculated and vice versa). After 5 months the measured variables were: dry biomass (roots and shoot), nematode knots caused by M. exigua in root, nematode juvenile (J2) found in 100.0 g of soil, and mycorrhizal percentage. Plant nutrients (P and N) contents were analysed. Significant differences were found in all the variables, but concentration N content in plants. Plants with mycorrhizae and plants with mycorrhizae and then inoculated with nematodes have the same behaviour. Control plants and plants with nematode and then inoculated with mycorrhizae behave similarly. It is thought that arbuscular mycorrhizae are formed before the nematode infestation, allowing coffee plants to regain the energy lost by the parasitic interaction. AM may help coffee plants with lignifications of the plant cell wall cuticle. As the cuticle thickens it is more difficult for nematodes to penetrate and enter into plant roots. Therefore, arbuscular mycorrhizae help coffee plants to uptake and transport nutrients, improving its nutritional status and stabilizing nematode attacks. It is suggested that symbiotic interactions help neutralize parasitic interactions.
