Background and Purpose: Klebsiella species are amongst the most common causes of a variety of community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections (HAI), characterized by high morbidity and mortality rates. Most infections caused by Klebsiella species are usually treated using antibiotics. The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance profile of Klebsiella species isolated from in-patients and out-patients at the Yaounde University Teaching Hospital. The data generated will go a long way to improve on the choice of an adequate empiric antibiotic treatment for infections caused by Klebsiella species. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out over a period of 6 months, spanning from February 2019 to July 2019 with a sample size of 37 isolates, obtained from 6 different clinical specimens. Identification of isolates was done using API 20E identification system (Biomerieux SA, Lyon, France). Susceptibility to antibiotics was tested as described by Kirby-Bauer in 1956. Androgenic effect of Mondia whitei roots in male rats

Aim: To determine the effect of the aqueous extract of Mondia whitei (Periplocaceae) roots on testosterone production and fertility of male rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats were used. In the acute study, 20 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups of 4 animals each. Four treated groups were administered orally a single dose of Mondia whitei (400 mg/kg) and the controls received a similar amount of distilled water. One group of animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation 1,2,4 and 6 h after treatment, respectively. The controls were sacrificed at 6 h. Testicular testosterone was determined by radioimmunoassay. In the chronic study, 28 rats were divided at random into 4 groups of 7 animals each: Groups 1, 2 and 3 were given orally the plant extract (400 mg·kg-1·day-1) for 2, 4 and 8 days, respectively. The animals of Groups 1 and 2 were sacrificed 24 hours after the last dosing. The controls (Group 4) received the same amount of distilled water for 8 days. The fertility was assessed only in Groups 3 and 4 and after that, the animals were sacrificed and the epididymal sperm density, the serum testosterone and the testicular testosterone and 17β-estradiol were assayed. The serum, testicular and epidydimal protein contents were also determined. Results: In the acute treatment groups, the serum and testicular concentrations of testosterone remained unchanged at all the time points. Chronic treatment for 8 days induced a significant increase in the testicular weight, the serum and testicular testosterone, the testicular protein content and the sperm density (P<0.05-0.01), but did not affect the accessory gland weights, the serum protein contents, the testicular concentration of 17β-estradiol and the fertility compared to the controls. Conclusion: Mondia whitei root extract possesses an androgenic property.

Adsorption and desorption phenomena on thermally annealed multi-walled carbon nanotubes by XANES study

The multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs) studied in this work were synthesized by the catalytic chemical vapor deposition(CCVD) process, and were thermally annealed by the hot filament plasma enhanced(HF PE) method at 550℃ for two *** x-ray absorption near edge structure(XANES) technique was used to investigate the adsorption and desorption phenomena of the MWCNTs at normal and grazing incidence *** adsorbates were found to have different sensitivities to the thermal *** geometry of the incident beam consistently gave information about the adsorption and desorption *** addition, the adsorption of non-intrinsic potassium quantitatively affected the intrinsic adsorbates and contributed to increase the conductivity of the *** desorption of potassium was almost 70% greater after the thermal *** potassium non-intrinsic adsorbates are from a physisorption mechanism whereas the intrinsic adsorbates result from chemisorption.

Energy and Thermodynamics of the Quantum-Corrected Schwarzschild Black Hole

Energy and thermodynamics are investigated in the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime when considering corrections due to quantum vacuum fluctuations. The Einstein and M？ller prescriptions are used to derive the expressions of the energy in the background. The temperature and heat capacity are also derived. The results show that due to the quantum fluctuations in the background of the Schwarzschild black hole, all the energies increase and the Einstein energy differs from M？ller＇s one. Moreover, when increasing the quantum correction factor aa, the difference between Einstein and M？ller energies, the Unruh–Verlinde temperature as well as the heat capacity of the black hole increases while the Hawking temperature remains unchanged.

Current Epidemiology of Intracranial Metastases in Two university Teaching Reference Hospitals of the Town of yaounde, Cameroon: Analysis of 35 Cases Recorded in the Neurosurgery Departments

Background: The incidence of intracranial metastases (ICMET) has been steadily rising, and its frequency with respect to primary brain tumours is relatively high. Objective: The objectives of this study were to elucidate the current epidemiology and describe the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of ICMET in yaounde. Method and findings: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done in the neurosurgery departments of the General and Central Hospitals of yaounde during the period from January 2016 to December 2022. We included all medical booklets of patients admitted for a tumoral intracranial expansive process with our target population being patients with histological evidence of ICMET, and did a retrospective inclusion of data using a pre-established technical form aimed at collecting sociodemographic data, clinical data, paraclinical data, and the treatment procedures. Analysis was done using the SPSS statistical software. A total of 614 cases of intracranial tumors were included among whom 35 presented histological evidence of ICMET. This gives a frequency of 5.7%. The sex ratio was 0.94, the mean age was 55.68 +/- 14.4 years, extremes 28 and 86 years and the age range 50 - 59 was affected in 28.57% of cases. The clinical presentation included signs of raised intracranial pressure (headache, blurred vision, vomiting) in 26 cases (74.3%), motor deficit 48.6%, seizures 17.1%. The mode of onset was metachronous in 71.4% and synchronous in 28.6%. The imaging techniques were cerebral CT scan in 82.9%, cerebral MRI in 40%, TAP scan in 22.9%. The metastatic lesions were supratentorial in 94.3% and single in 62.9%. The primary cancers found were breast cancer (31.4%), lung cancer (25.7%), prostate cancer (17.1%), thyroid cancer (5.7%), colon cancer (2.9%), and melanoma (2.9%). The therapeutic modalities were total resection (68.6%), radiotherapy (37.1%). Conclusion: Intracranial metastases are relatively frequent. There is a female sex predominance and the ag

The modulational instability in the three coupled α-polypeptide chains of a collagen molecule is investigated. Choosing symmetric and asymmetric solutions, and applying the so-called rotating-wave approximation, we describe the dynamics of the system by the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger （DNLS） equation. The linear stability analysis of the continuous wave solution is performed. The numerical simulations show the generation of trains of solitonic structures in the lattice with increasing amplitude as time progresses. The effect of damping and noise forces of the physiological temperature （T = 300 K） introduces an erratic behavior to the formed patterns, reinforcing the idea that the energy used in metabolic processes is confined to specific regions for efficiency.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of sands of the lower course of the Sanaga River, Cameroon: implications for weathering,provenance, and tectonic setting

This study focuses on the mineralogy and bulk chemical composition of 19 sediment samples,collected from the Sanaga River bed,between Nanga-Eboko and the Atlantic Ocean in Cameroon,to infer provenance,weathering,and tectonic *** textural analysis revealed that these sediments are mainly coarse-grained sands.X-ray diffraction and heavy mineral analyses show that these sands are made of quartz,microcline,plagioclase,muscovite,ilmenite,anatase,magnetite,opaques,and *** Index of Chemical Variability values(1.07–2.68)indicates that the sands are *** Chemical Index of Alteration(53–66%),Plagioclase Index of Alteration(PIA;57–75%),and Mafic Index of Alteration(54–67%)values revealed a moderate intensity of weathering for these *** to the compositional maturity diagram,the sands are mainly *** studied sands show enrichment in light rare earth elements relative to heavy rare earth elements and a negative anomaly in Eu(Eu/Eu*=0.32–0.83).These sands were derived from felsic metamorphic rocks dated Meso to Neoproterozoic from the Pan-African(700–1000 Ma)domain of south ***/U ratios(mean=5.40;n=19)reveal that these sands originating from felsic source rocks and are low to moderately *** the tectonic discrimination diagrams,all the samples are plotted in the rift and passive margin domains,which is consistent with the tectonic history of Pan African in southern Cameroon.
