Background: Oral mucositis(OM) is one of the most common complications of mucotoxic cancer *** induces clinically significant pain, increases the risk of infections and affects the patients’ quality of ***: This study investigated the effects of an herbal preparation from Plantago ovata hydrocolloid in the prevention and treatment of OM, in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with a regimen including ***, setting, participants, and interventions: This research was a double-blind, randomized, controlled crossover trial. The herbal compound consisted of a mixture of 500 mg of P. ovate husk in 30 m L water plus three drops of vinegar per dose, which was used as a mouthwash. Phytochemical and physicochemical tests of the compound were also performed. Twenty-eight patients who developed mucositis during the chemotherapy screening cycle were randomized to the herbal compound(n = 14) and placebo(n = 14) groups. They received herbal compound or placebo three times per day during their next chemotherapy cycle(cycle 1 of treatment). Patients were crossed over during cycle 2 of treatment and received the alternative therapy. An oral care protocol was prescribed to all patients in cycles 1 and 2 of the *** outcome measures: The patients were visited at baseline, the end of the first and second weeks of the screening cycle, and the end of the first and second weeks of each of two treatment cycles. The degree of mucositis was used as the main treatment outcome. Prediction of meteorological drought in arid and semi-arid regions using PDSI and SDSM: a case study in Fars Province, Iran

Drought is one of the most significant environmental disasters,especially in arid and semi-arid *** indices as a tool for management practices seeking to deal with the drought phenomenon are widely used around the *** of these indicators is the Palmer drought severity index(PDSI),which is used in many parts of the world to assess the drought situation and *** this study,the drought state of Fars Province in Iran was evaluated by using the PDSI over 1995-2014 according to meteorological data from six weather stations in the province.A statistical downscaling model(SDSM)was used to apply the output results of the general circulation model in Fars *** implement data processing and prediction of climate data,a statistical period 1995-2014 was considered as the monitoring period,and a statistical period 2019-2048 was for the prediction *** results revealed that there is a good agreement between the simulated precipitation(R2>0.63;R2,determination coefficient;MAE0.95,MAE<1.74,and RMSE<1.78)with the observed data from the *** results of the drought monitoring model presented that dry periods would increase over the next three decades as compared to the historical *** studies showed the highest drought in the meteorological stations Abadeh and Lar during the prediction period under two future scenarios representative concentration pathways(RCP4.5 and RCP8.5).According to the results of the validation periods and efficiency criteria,we suggest that the SDSM is a proper tool for predicting drought in arid and semi-arid regions.

Finite element analysis and modeling of water absorption by date pits during a soaking process

Date pits for feed preparation or oil extraction are soaked in water to soften before milling or extrusion. Knowledge of water absorption by the date pits helps in better managing the soaking duration. In this research, the process of water absorption by date pits was modeled and analyzed using Fick's second law of diffusion, finite element approach, and Peleg model. The moisture content of the pits reached to its saturation level of 41.5% (wet basis) after 10 d. The estimated coefficient of diffusion was 9.89×10-12 m2/s. The finite element model with a proposed ellipsoid geometry for a single date pit and the analytical model fitted better to the experimental data with R2 of 0.98. The former model slightly overestimated the moisture content of the pits during the initial stages of the soaking and the latter model generally underestimated this variable through the entire stages of soaking process.

Numerical study of aerosol particle deposition in simple and converging-diverging micro-channels with a slip boundary condition at the wall

The design of micro-devices involving aerosol transport requires the study of the deposition of aerosols in micro-channels. In this study, the slip and no-slip boundary conditions for the gas flow regime were applied to the Navier-Stokes equations to obtain the particle deposition in simple and converging-diverging micro-channels. The equation of particle motion included inertial, viscous, Brownian, and gravity terms. It was found that the ratio of gravity to inertial effects controls the deposition of particles with diameters of 0.1-1 μm, and the ratio of diffusion to inertial effects controls the deposition of particles with diameters of 0.01-0.001 i^m. Comparison between the no-slip and slip flow regimes showed that the deposition of 0.1- to 1-μm-diameter particles was less and the deposition of 0.01- to 0.001-1μm-diameter particles was greater for the slip flow regime. There was no significant difference between slip and no-slip flow regimes for the deposition of 0.01- to 0.1-μm-diameter particles. Finally, it was shown that the stagnated gas in the corners of the converging-diverging micro-channel produced similar gas velocity profiles under the slip and no-slip flow regimes.

A fuzzy logic model to predict the out-of-seam dilution in longwall mining

The longwall mining method is often affected by the out-of-seam dilution （OSD）. Therefore, predicting and controlling of dilution are important factors for reducing mining costs. In this study, the fuzzy set theory and multiple regression models with parameters, including variation in seam thickness, dip of seam, seam thickness, depth of seam, and hydraulic radius as inputs to the models were applied to pre- dict the OSD in the longwall coal panels. Field data obtained from kerman and Tabas coal mines, lran were used to develop and validate the models. Three indices including coefficient of determination （R2）, root mean square error （RMSE） and variance account for （VAF） were used to evaluate the perfor- mance of the models. With 10 randomly selected datasets, for the linear, polynomial, power, exponential, and fuzzy logic models, R2, RSME and VAF are equal to （0.85, 4.4, 84.4）, （0.61, 7.5, 59.6）, （0.84, 4.5, 72.7）, （0.80, 4.1, 79.6）, and （0.97, 2.1, 95.7）, respectively. The obtained results indicate that the fuzzy logic model predictor with R2 = 0.97, RMSE = 2.1, and VAF = 95.7 performs better than the other models.

Prediction of rock mass rating using fuzzy logic and multi-variable RMR regression model

Rock mass rating system （RMR） is based on the six parameters which was defined by Bieniawski （1989） [1]. Experts frequently relate joint and discontinuities and ground water conditions in linguistic terms with rough calculation. As a result, there is a sharp transition between two modules which create doubts. So, in this paper the proposed weights technique was applied for linguistic criteria. Then by using the fuzzy inference system and the multi-variable regression analysis, the accurate RMR is predicted. Before the performing of regression analysis, sensitivity analysis was applied for each of Bieniawski parameters. In this process, the best function was selected among linear, logarithmic, exponential and inverse func- tions and finally it was applied in the regression analysis for construction of a predictive equation. From the constructed regression equation the relative importance of the input parameters can also be observed. It should be noted that joint condition was identified as the most important effective parameter upon RMR. Finally, fuzzy and regression models were validated with the test datasets and it was found that the fuzzy model predicts more accurately RMR than reression models.

Comparison of effective parameters for copper powder production via electrorefining and electrowinning cells and improvement using DOE methods

Porosity prediction from seismic inversion of a similarity attribute based on a pseudo-forward equation(PFE):a case study from the North Sea Basin,Netherlands

The objective of this work is to implement a pseudo-forward equation which is called PFE to transform data （similarity attribute） to model parameters （porosity） in a gas reservoir in the F3 block of North Sea. This equation which is an experimental model has unknown constants in its structure; hence, a least square solution is applied to find the best constants. The results derived from solved equa- tions show that the errors on measured data are mapped into the errors of estimated constants; hence, Tikhonov regularization is used to improve the estimated parameters. The results are compared with a conventional method such as cross plotting between acoustic impedance and porosity values to validate the PFE model. When the testing dataset in sand units was used, the correlation coefficient between two variables （actual and predicted values） was obtained as 0.720 and 0.476 for PFE model and cross-plotting analysis, respectively. Therefore, the testing dataset validates rela- tively well the PFE optimized by Tikhonov regularization in sand units of a gas reservoir. The obtained results indi- cate that PFE could provide initial information about sandstone reservoirs. It could estimate reservoir porosity distribution approximately and it highlights bright spots and fault structures such as gas chimneys and salt edges.
