Trehalose(Tre)is a non-reducing disaccharide found in many species,including bacteria,fungi,invertebrates,yeast,and even plants,where it acts as an osmoprotectant,energy source,or protein/membrane protector.Despite relatively small amounts in plants,Tre concentrations increase following exposure to abiotic stressors.Trehalose-6-phosphate,a precursor of Tre,has regulatory functions in sugar metabolism,crop production,and stress tolerance.Among the various abiotic stresses,temperature extremes(heat or cold stress)are anticipated to impact crop production worldwide due to ongoing climate changes.Applying small amounts of Tre can mitigate negative physiological,metabolic,and molecular responses triggered by temperature stress.Trehalose also interacts with other sugars,osmoprotectants,amino acids,and phytohormones to regulate metabolic reprogramming that underpins temperature stress adaptation.Transformed plants expressing Tre-synthesis genes accumulate Tre and show improved stress tolerance.Genome-wide studies of Tre-encoding genes suggest roles in plant growth,development,and stress tolerance.This review discusses the functions of Tre in mitigating temperature stress—highlighting genetic engineering approaches to modify Tre metabolism,crosstalk,and interactions with other molecules—and in-silico approaches for identifying novel Tre-encoding genes in diverse plant species.We consider how this knowledge can be used to develop temperature-resilient crops essential for sustainable agriculture.

Improvement in Hurst exponent estimation and its application to financial markets

This research aims to improve the efficiency in estimating the Hurst exponent in financial time series.A new procedure is developed based on equality in distribution and is applicable to the estimation methods of the Hurst exponent.We show how to use this new procedure with three of the most popular algorithms(generalized Hurst exponet,total triangles area,and fractal dimension)in the literature.Findings show that this new approach improves the accuracy of the original methods,mainly for longer series.The second contribution of this study is that we show how to use this methodology to test whether the series is self-similar,constructing a confidence interval for the Hurst exponent for which the series satisfies this property.Finally,we present an empirical application of this new procedure to stocks of the S&P500 index.Similar to previous contributions,we consider this to be relevant to financial literature,as it helps to avoid inappropriate interpretations of market efficiency that can lead to erroneous decisions not only by market participants but also by policymakers.

A bibliometric review of cryptocurrencies:how have they grown?

With the development of new technologies,some concepts become relevant in the economic area,as is the case with cryptocurrencies,in general,or Bitcoin and Ethereum,in particular.Due to the impact of these tools,a detailed bibliometric study that allows us to obtain all information about cryptocurrencies must be conducted.This study will help scientific production by specifying the development and lines of related research that have been followed and are currently being followed.We have used Tableau,R(Bibliometrix R Package),and VOSviewer software to analyze the information.These have been combined to create and review unified metadata from the Web of Science(WoS)and Scopus databases.The bibliometric analysis shows 771 articles on the WoS database and 648 articles on Scopus published between 2010 and early 2019.They present the most relevant articles,research areas,countries,institu-tions,authors,journals,and trends during the last few years.In conclusion,the number of publications has grown in the last 3 years.The analysis shows the evolution of block-chain technology used in this type of cryptocurrency.The review of this period marks a possible end to the historical part of cryptocurrencies,thereby opening the current topic to its multiple applications.

Central nervous system stimulation therapies in phantom limb pain:a systematic review of clinical trials

Phantom limb pain is a chronic pain syndrome that is difficult to cope with.Despite neurostimulation treatment is indicated for refractory neuropathic pain,there is scant evidence from randomized controlled trials to recommend it as the treatment choice.Thus,a systematic review was performed to analyze the efficacy of central nervous system stimulation therapies as a strategy for pain management in patients with phantom limb pain.A literature search for studies conducted between 1970 and September 2020 was carried out using the MEDLINE and Embase databases.Principles of The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline were followed.There were a total of 10 full-text articles retrieved and included in this review.Deep brain stimulation,repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation,transcranial direct current stimulation,and motor cortex stimulation were the treatment strategies used in the selected clinical trials.Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation were effective therapies to reduce pain perception,as well as to relieve anxiety and depression symptoms in phantom limb pain patients.Conversely,invasive approaches were considered the last treatment option as evidence in deep brain stimulation and motor cortex stimulation suggests that the value of phantom limb pain treatment remains controversial.However,the findings on use of these treatment strategies in other forms of neuropathic pain suggest that these invasive approaches could be a potential option for phantom limb pain patients.

Improving georeferencing accuracy of Very High Resolution satellite imagery using freely available ancillary data at global coverage

While impressive direct geolocation accuracies better than 5.0 m CE90(90%of circular error)can be achieved from the last DigitalGlobe’s Very High Resolution(VHR)satellites(i.e.GeoEye-1 and WorldView-1/2/3/4),it is insufficient for many precise geodetic applications.For these sensors,the best horizontal geopositioning accuracies(around 0.55 m CE90)can be attained by using third-order 3D rational functions with vendor’s rational polynomial coefficients data refined by a zero-order polynomial adjustment obtained from a small number of very accurate ground control points(GCPs).However,these high-quality GCPs are not always available.In this work,two different approaches for improving the initial direct geolocation accuracy of VHR satellite imagery are proposed.Both of them are based on the extraction of three-dimensional GCPs from freely available ancillary data at global coverage such as multi-temporal information of Google Earth and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 30 m digital elevation model.The application of these approaches on WorldView-2 and GeoEye-1 stereo pairs over two different study sites proved to improve the horizontal direct geolocation accuracy values around of 75%.

Von Neumann Regularity and Quadratic Conorms in JB^＊-triples and C^＊-algebras

We revise the notion of von Neumann regularity in JB^＊-triples by finding a new characterisation in terms of the range of the quadratic operator Q（a）. We introduce the quadratic conorm of an element a in a JB^＊-triple as the minimum reduced modulus of the mapping Q（a）. It is shown that the quadratic conorm of a coincides with the infimum of the squares of the points in the triple spectrum of a. It is established that a contractive bijection between JBW^＊-triples is a triple isomorphism if, and only if, it preserves quadratic conorms. The continuity of the quadratic conorm and the generalized inverse are discussed. Some applications to C^＊-algebras and von Neumann algebras are also studied.

Context-dependent insect predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite

Context dependence arises when ecological relationships vary with the conditions under which they are observed. Context dependence of interactions involving parasites is poorly known, even if it is key to understanding host–parasite relationships and food web dynamics. This paper investigates to which extent predation pressure on an avian ectoparasite (Carnus hemapterus) is context-dependent. Based on a predator-exclusion experiment, predation pressure on C. hemapterus pupae in the host's nest for 3 years, and its variation between habitat types are quantified. Variation in precipitation and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is also explored as a likely cause of context dependency. We hypothesize that predation pressure should fluctuate with such surrogates of food availability, so that inter-annual and intra-annual differences may emerge. The number of nests with significant reduction of pupae varied widely among years ranging from 24% to 75%. However, average pupae reduction in nests where a significant reduction occurred did not vary between years. No differences in predation rates between habitat types were detected. Precipitation and NDVI varied widely between years and NDVI was consistently lower around nests on cliffs than around nests on trees and farmhouses. Parallels were found between variation in predation pressure and precipitation/NDVI at a wide scale (highest predation the driest year, and much lower the 2 rainier ones), but not at the nest scale. This paper shows clear context-dependent insect predation pressure on an ectoparasite under natural conditions, and that such interaction changes in signs rather than magnitude between years. The causes for these variations require longer-term studies and/or well-designed, large-scale experiments.

Improving automatic climate control with decision support techniques to minimize disease effects in greenhouse tomatoes

Crop growth in greenhouses is basically determined by the climate variables in the environment and by the amounts of water and fertilizers supplied by irrigation.The management of these factors depends on the expertise of agricultural technicians and farmers,usually assisted by control systems installed within the greenhouse.In this context,decision support features enable us to incorporate invaluable human experience so thatwe can take quick and effective decisions to ensure efficient crop growth.This work describes a real-time decision support system for greenhouse tomatoes that supports decisions at three stages–the supervision stage identifies climate sensor faults,the control stage maintains climate variables at setpoints,and the strategic stage identifies diseases affecting the crop and changes climate variables accordingly to minimize damage.The DSS was implemented by integrating a real-time rule-based tool into the control system.Experimental results show that the system increases climate control effectiveness,while providing support in preventing diseaseswhich are difficult to eradicate.The system was tested by simulating the appearance of the disease and observing the real systemresponse.The main contribution has been to demonstrate that production rules,which aremature and well-known in the artificial intelligence domain,can act as a shared technology for the whole system.This means that fault detection,temperature control and disease monitoring features are not dealt with in isolation.

Association of objectively measured physical activity and sedentary time with health-related quality of life in women with fibromyalgia:The al-ándalus project

Purpose: To examine the association of physical activity(PA) intensity levels and sedentary time with health-related quality of life(HRQoL) in women with fibromyalgia and whether patients meeting the current PA guidelines present better HRQoL.Methods: This cross-sectional study included 407 women with fibromyalgia aged 51.4 ± 7.6 years. The time spent(min/day) in different PA intensity levels(light, moderate, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA) and sedentary time were measured with triaxial accelerometry. The proportion of women meeting the American PA recommendations(>150 min/week of MVPA in bouts >10 min) was also calculated.HRQoL domains(physical function, physical role, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, emotional role, and mental health), as well as physical and mental components, were assessed using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey.Results: All PA intensity levels were positively correlated with different HRQoL dimensions(r_(partial) between 0.10 and 0.23, all p < 0.05). MVPA was independently associated with social functioning(p < 0.05). Sedentary time was independently associated with physical function, physical role, bodily pain, vitality, social functioning, and both the physical and mental component summary score(all p < 0.05). Patients meeting the PA recommendations presented better scores for bodily pain(mean = 24.2(95%CI: 21.3-27.2) vs. mean = 20.4(95%CI: 18.9-21.9), p = 0.023)and better scores for social functioning(mean = 48.7(95%CI: 43.9-44.8) vs. mean = 42.3(95%CI: 39.8-44.8), p = 0.024).Conclusion: MVPA(positively) and sedentary time(negatively) are independently associated with HRQoL in women with fibromyalgia. Meeting the current PA recommendations is significantly associated with better scores for bodily pain and social functioning. These results highlight the importance of being physically active and avoiding sedentary behaviors in this population.

Localization on Certain Grothendieck Categories

Using categorical techniques we obtain some results on localization and colocalization theory in Grothendieck categories with a set of small projective generators. In particular, we give a sufficient condition for such category to be semiartinian. For semiartinian Grothendieck categories where every simple object has a projective cover, we obtain that every localizing subcategory is a TTF-class. In addition, some applications to semiperfect categories are obtained.
