Change in observed long-term greening across Switzerlandevidence from a three decades NDVI time-series and its relationship with climate and land cover factors

Environmental changes are significantly modifying terrestrial vegetation dynamics,with serious consequences on Earth system functioning and provision of ecosystem *** conditions are an essential element underpinning global sustainability frameworks,such as the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),requiring effective solutions to assess the impacts of changing land conditions induced by various driving *** the global scale,long-term increase of vegetation greening has been widely reported notably in seasonally snow-covered ecosystems as a response to warming ***,greening trends at the national scale have received less attention,although countries like Switzerland are prone to important changing climate ***,we used a 35-year satellite-derived annual and seasonal time-series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)to assess vegetation greenness evolution at different spatial and temporal scales across Switzerland and related them to temperature,precipitation,and land cover to investigate possible responses of changing climatic *** indicate that there is a statistically significant greening trend at the national scale with an NDVI mean increasing slope of 0.6%/year for the 61%significant pixels across *** particular,the seasonal mean NDVI shows an important break for winter,autumn and spring seasons starting from 2010,potentially indicating a critical point of changing land *** biogeographical scale,we observed an apparent clustering(Jura-Plateau;Northern-Southern Alps;Eastern-Western Alps)related to landscape characteristics,while forested land cover classes are more responsive to NDVI ***,the NDVI values are mostly a function of temperature at elevations below the tree line rather than *** findings suggest that multi-annual and seasonal NDVI can be a valuable indicator to monitor vegetation conditions at different scales and can provide complementary observati

Transfer learning from T1-weighted to T2-weighted Magnetic resonance sequences for brain image segmentation

Magnetic resonance(MR)imaging is a widely employed medical imaging technique that produces detailed anatomical images of the human *** segmentation of MR im-ages plays a crucial role in medical image analysis,as it enables accurate diagnosis,treatment planning,and monitoring of various diseases and *** to the lack of sufficient medical images,it is challenging to achieve an accurate segmentation,especially with the application of deep learning *** aim of this work is to study transfer learning from T1-weighted(T1-w)to T2-weighted(T2-w)MR sequences to enhance bone segmentation with minimal required computation *** the use of an excitation-based convolutional neural networks,four transfer learning mechanisms are proposed:transfer learning without fine tuning,open fine tuning,conservative fine tuning,and hybrid transfer ***,a multi-parametric segmentation model is proposed using T2-w MR as an intensity-based augmentation *** novelty of this work emerges in the hybrid transfer learning approach that overcomes the overfitting issue and preserves the features of both modalities with minimal computation time and *** segmentation results are evaluated using 14 clinical 3D brain MR and CT *** results reveal that hybrid transfer learning is superior for bone segmentation in terms of performance and computation time with DSCs of 0.5393±*** T2-w-based augmentation has no significant impact on the performance of T1-w MR segmentation,it helps in improving T2-w MR segmentation and developing a multi-sequences segmentation model.

About 2 percent of red clump stars are found to be the lithium-rich and thus the surface lithium increases obviously in some red clump *** physical mechanism of the lithium enrichment in these stars has not yet been explained satisfactorily by the evolutionary models of single *** flash induced internal gravity wave mixing(i.e.,IGW)could play a primary role in explaining the red clump star with lithium enrichment and it has a very significant impact on the internal structure and surface compositions of a *** can significantly increase the mixing efficiency of the internal gravity wave because the timescale for the enrichment event has been *** mixing can explain the observed behavior of lithium on red giant stars that are more luminosity than the RGB ***,it has a very small effect on the diffusion of elements because its diffusion coefficient is much smaller than the one of IGW induced mixing after the core helium flash.

Time-first approach for land cover mapping using big Earth observation data time-series in a data cube-a case study from the Lake geneva region(Switzerland)

Accurate,consistent,and high-resolution Land Use&Cover(LUC)information is fundamental for effectively monitoring landscape dynamics and better apprehending drivers,pressures,state,and impacts on land ***,the availability of such national products with high thematic accuracy is still limited and consequently researchers and policymakers are constrained to work with data that do not necessarily reflect on-the-ground realities impending to correctly capture details of landscape features as well as limiting the identification and quantification of drivers and rate of ***,we took advantage of the Switzerland’s official LUC statistical sampling survey and dense time-series of Sentinel-2 data,combining them with Machine and Deep Learning methods to produce an accurate and high spatial resolution land cover map over the Lake geneva *** suggest that time-first approach is a valuable alternative to space-first approaches,accounting for the intra-annual variability of classes,hence improving classification *** demonstrate that Deep Learning methods outperform more traditional Machine Learning ones such as Random Forest,providing more accurate predictions with lower *** produced land cover map has a high accuracy,an improved spatial resolution,while at the same time preserving the statistical significance(*** proportion)of the official national *** work paves the way towards the objective to produce a yearly high resolution land cover map of Switzerland and potentially implement a continuous land change monitoring *** further work is required to properly address challenges such as the need for increased temporal resolution for LUC information or the quality of training samples.

International relations or politics are a dynamic discipline within politics. It concentrates upon the understanding or explanation of conflict and power between nations or countries. It is of course highly relevant today with much warfare or threats thereof. One central theory is the so-called realism or neorealism. Its foremost representative today is Professor Mearsheimer. Professor John Mearsheimer has put several of his well-known lectures on YouTube. In these he spells out how he looks upon international politics today through a neorealist approach. Very much worth listening to, we must though question consistency in his message.

The chloroplast is a critical battleground in the arms race between plants and *** microbe-secreted mycotoxins,tenuazonic acid(TeA),produced by the genus Alternaria and other phytopathogenic fungi,inhibits photosynthesis,leading to a burst of photosynthetic singlet oxygen(1O2)that is implicated in damage and chloroplast-to-nucleus retrograde *** the signicant crop damage caused by Alternaria pathogens,our understanding of the molecular mechanism by which TeA promotes pathoge-nicity and cognate plant defense responses remains *** now reveal that *** induces necrotrophic foliar lesions by harnessing EXECUTER1(EX1)/EX2-mediated chloroplast-to-nucleus retro-grade signaling activated by TeA toxin–derived photosynthetic 1O2 in Arabidopsis *** of the 1O2-sensitive EX1-W643 residue or complete deletion of the EX1 singlet oxygen sensor domain compro-mises expression of 1O2-responsive nuclear genes and foliar *** also found that TeA toxin rapidly induces nuclear genes implicated in jasmonic acid(JA)synthesis and signaling,and EX1-mediated retro-grade signaling appears to be critical for establishing a signaling cascade from 1O2 to *** present study sheds new light on the foliar pathogenicity of ***,during which EX1-dependent 1O2 signaling in-duces JA-dependent foliar cell death.

Schisming as an Interactional Resource for Learning at the Frontiers of Work and Vocational Training-A Secondary Publication

This paper examines the sorts of interactional competencies and institutional demands required from students as they engage in complex forms of participation combining work and training *** focuses on a series of empirical cases,recorded through video data and analyzed from a conversation analytic perspective,in which mentors make the decision to intervene during work sessions moderated by *** interventions do not interrupt the student’s activity and lead to the emergence of two distinct but not impermeable interactional *** complex participation framework,known as“schisming,”contributes to overcoming practical issues within multiparty *** study shows how schisming constitutes a particular sequential phenomenon where participants reorganize the interaction and co-construct a social and cognitive interactional space,thus enabling a shared understanding of the specific training *** data from the practical training of medical radiographers are used to illustrate how schisming may contribute to learning in the conditions of guided practice.
