Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors protect tissues via cellular and mitochondrial pathways:Experimental and clinical evidence

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key driver of cardiovascular disease(CVD)in metabolic syndrome and diabetes.This dysfunction promotes the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS),which cause oxidative stress and inflammation.Angiotensin II,the main mediator of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system,also contributes to CVD by promoting ROS production.Reduced activity of sirtuins(SIRTs),a family of proteins that regulate cellular metabolism,also worsens oxidative stress.Reduction of energy production by mitochondria is a common feature of all metabolic disorders.High SIRT levels and 5’adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase signaling stimulate hypoxia-inducible factor 1 beta,which promotes ketosis.Ketosis,in turn,increases autophagy and mitophagy,processes that clear cells of debris and protect against damage.Sodiumglucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors(SGLT2i),a class of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes,have a beneficial effect on these mechanisms.Randomized clinical trials have shown that SGLT2i improves cardiac function and reduces the rate of cardiovascular and renal events.SGLT2i also increase mitochondrial efficiency,reduce oxidative stress and inflammation,and strengthen tissues.These findings suggest that SGLT2i hold great potential for the treatment of CVD.Furthermore,they are proposed as anti-aging drugs;however,rigorous research is needed to validate these preliminary findings.

Annual variation of adult survival of a south-temperate House Wren population in Argentina

Identifying factors affecting the survival of individuals is essential for understanding the evolution of life-history traits and population dynamics.despite numerous studies on this subject in north-temperate environments,there is a lack of equivalent studies at similar latitudes in the south.Here,we used a 14-year dataset of capture,banding,and resighting to estimate the annual variation in the apparent adult survival probability of a south-temperate population of House Wrens(Troglodytes aedon bonariae).We evaluated temporal variation in sur-vival and the effect of environmental(climatic)and demographic variables(adult abundance,total number of fledglings produced during each breeding season)on survival estimators.We found that the probability of adult survival decreased as the abundance of breeding adults increased.This density-dependent effect could be related to the resident lifestyle of southern House Wrens,which could determine an intense competition for territories and resources that ultimately would affect their survival.

Starting from the importance of preserving our information and protecting our devices against attacks on their vulnerabilities, this article aims to establish the level of knowledge in computer security and problem-solving of students at a university in northwest Mexico. This research has a quantitative approach where the European Framework of Digital Competencies for Citizenship was used as a reference to identify and establish the level of the competencies that were evaluated. The IKAnOS Test was used as a data collection tool. The results show that students know the importance of keeping their devices safe and how valuable the information found on them is. On the other hand, the results also show a considerable percentage of students who do not have the knowledge and are at a basic level of knowledge to solve technical problems with their devices.

Recent reports suggest that aging is not solely a physiological process in living beings; instead, it should be considered a pathological process or disease(Amorim et al., 2022). Consequently, this process involves a wide range of factors, spanning from genetic to environmental factors, and even includes the gut microbiome(GM)(Mayer et al., 2022). All these processes coincide at some point in the inflammatory process, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, at different degrees in various organs and systems that constitute a living organism(Mayer et al., 2022; AguilarHernández et al., 2023).

BACKGROUnD Radicular cyst is a lesion of odontogenic origin that arises from epithelial remains due to periapical periodontitis caused by inflammatory reactions generated at the apex of affected teeth with infected or necrotic pulps.The therapeutic mana gement of radicular cysts is controversial.There is only one case report of enucleation of a radicular cyst managed with microsurgery and apicoectomy,but without the use of the guided tissue regeneration(GTR)technique in the same surgical procedure.The present clinical case describes the management of a radicular cyst with microsurgical approach,performance of an apicoectomy of the tooth associated with the entity,application of GTR technique,use of a resorbable membrane of type I bovine collagen,and bovine xenograft.CASE SUMMARY A 68-year-old patient presented with a radicular cyst from an upper lateral incisor.The microsurgical management used was aimed at enucleating the chemical membrane,performing apicoectomy of the tooth along with careful and precise retrograde filling,and implementing GTR technique using a resorbable collagen membrane and bovine xenograft.The diagnosis of radicular cyst was confirmed using histopathological analysis.The patient underwent follow-up evaluations at 10 and 30 d postoperatively.At 4 months postoperative evaluation,she remained asymptomatic,and radiographs showed significant periapical healing with adequate bone formation.COnCLUSIOn These results suggest that microsurgical management using the GTR technique with collagen membrane and xenograft,contributes to bone regeneration.

The ILux^(®) compared to the mechanical meibomian gland expression for the treatment of moderate and severe meibomian gland dysfunction

AIM:To compare the safety and effectiveness of eyelid treatment with the ILux®-MGD Treatment System in one session versus five sessions of mechanical meibomian gland expression(MMGE)in patients with moderate to severe meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD).METHODS:A prospective,randomized,open-label,and controlled clinical trial that compared one session of the ILux®MGD Treatment System versus five sessions of MMGE in both eyes of 130 patients aged≥18y with Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI)scores≥13,total meibomian gland scores(MGS)ofn the lower eyelid of each eye,and non-invasive tear break-up time(nI-TBUT)ndomized 1:1 to ILux®or MMGE.RESULTS:The mean age was 58±17.49y.Baseline total MGS scores in both treatment groups were comparable.During follow-up,there were significant differences in total MGS and per sector with Pnalysis was performed using generalized estimating equations corresponding to the generalized linear model for repeated means to determine the treatment relationship with total MGS,nIBUT,and OSDI.There was a significant difference between ILux®and MMGE(Pnth in MGS,nI-BUT,and OSDI scores.no adverse events were reported.COnCLUSIOn:ILux®treatment compared to MMGE significantly improves symptoms and signs in patients with moderate to severe MGD for one year without adverse events.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains one of the most commonly diagnosed and deadliest types of cancer worldwide.CRC displays a desmoplastic reaction(DR)that has been inversely associated with poor prognosis;less DR is associated with a better prognosis.This reaction generates excessive connective tissue,in which cancer-associated fibroblasts(CAFs)are critical cells that form a part of the tumor microenvironment.CAFs are directly involved in tumorigenesis through different mechanisms.However,their role in immunosuppression in CRC is not well understood,and the precise role of signal transducers and activators of transcription(STATs)in mediating CAF activity in CRC remains unclear.Among the myriad chemical and biological factors that affect CAFs,different cytokines mediate their function by activating STAT signaling pathways.Thus,the harmful effects of CAFs in favoring tumor growth and invasion may be modulated using STAT inhibitors.Here,we analyze the impact of different STATs on CAF activity and their immunoregulatory role.

The Antarctic Paleogene marine fossil record has been the key to reconstructing the evolution of the Weddellian Sea and final dismemberment of Southern Gondwana.In this context,Eocene marine vertebrates from Seymour(Marambio)Island have provided valuable information.We present the first Eocene record of marine reptiles from the southern Atlantic Coast of South America.This corresponds to several postcranial turtle remains represented by a proximal end of the right humerus,three caudal and one thoracic vertebrae,a fragment of the left pubis,and ten ossicles of the dorsal carapace,coming from the leticia Formation(late-mid Eocene)at Cabo Tiburones,Tierra del Fuego,Argentina.These materials show severalfeatures such as the size and general morphology of the humerus and vertebrae,and the presence of relatively small,irregular,smooth,and unkeeled ossicles,which allow us to assign them to dermochelyidae indet.dermochelyids are a cosmopolitan group ofcryptodiran turtles,registered from the late Cretaceous up to the recent,with some physiological-biological peculiarities(e.g.,endothermy and an exclusive jellyfish-based diet)and characterized by the presence of an osseous carapace formed by ossicles.The new finding from the leticia Formation is an addition to the scarce and extremely fragmentary record of Eocene dermochelyids from the southern seas like those from the La Meseta and Submeseta formations(Antarctica)and the Waihao and Burnside formations(new Zealand).This new information allows us to discuss the presence of these turtles in such high latitudes in the past and its implication in the evolution of the Weddellian fauna.

Alzheimer’s disease(AD) and type 2 diabetes(T2D): More than 55 million people suffer from dementia, and it is expected that over 150 million people will suffer from this disease by 2050. AD is the most common type of dementia and while aging remains the main risk factor to suffer it, previous studies have also shown that metabolic disorders, and T2D specifically, are also major contributors(Wang et al., 2012).
