Late Mesozoic Exhumation of the Huangling Massif:Constraints on the Evolution of the Middle Yangtze River

Plate subduction leads to complex exhumation processes on continents.The Huangling Massif lies at the northern margin of the South China Block.Whether the Huangling Massif was exhumed as a watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River during the Mesozoic remains under debate.We examined the exhumation history of the Huangling Massif based on six granite bedrock samples,using apatite fission track(AFT)and apatite and zircon(U-Th)/He(AHe and ZHe)thermochronology.These samples yielded ages of 157–132 Ma(ZHe),119–106 Ma(AFT),and 114–72 Ma(AHe),respectively.Thermal modeling revealed that three phases of rapid cooling occurred during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous,late Early Cretaceous,and Late Cretaceous.These exhumation processes led to the high topographic relief responsible for the emergence of the Huangling Massif.The integrated of our new data with published sedimentological records suggests that the Huangling Massif might have been the watershed of the middle reaches of the Paleo-Yangtze River since the Cretaceous.At that time,the rivers flowed westward into the Sichuan Basin and eastward into the Jianghan Basin.The subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Asian continent in the Mesozoic deeply influenced the geomorphic evolution of the South China Block.

This is a multicenter benchmarking study on liver transplantation(LT)for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma(PHC)after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(1).The study comprises of 134 patients from 2014 to 2018 among whom the majority had underlying primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC).Dropout rate was available from 4 out of 17 centers and was 28%,primarily for oncological reasons(tumor progression and lymph node invasion).All patients followed neo-adjuvant chemoradiotherapy according to the Mayo(88%)or Mayo-like protocol.Liver grafts originated from brain-dead donors in 61.3%of cases and from living donors in 29.7%of cases.

The kinetics of photoinduced changes,namely,photobleaching and photodarkening in sputtered ternary GeSbSethin films,was studied.The study of time evolution of the absorption coefficientΔα(t)upon roomtemperature near-bandgap irradiation revealed several types of photoinduced effects.The as-deposited films exhibited a fast photodarkening followed by a dominative photobleaching process.Annealed thin films were found to undergo photodarkening only.The local structure studied by Raman scattering spectroscopy showed significant structural changes upon thermal annealing,which are presumably responsible for a transition from the photobleaching observed in as-deposited and reversible photodarkening in annealed thin films.Moreover,a transient photodarkening process was observed in both as-deposited and annealed thin films.The influence of the initial film thickness and laser optical intensity on the kinetics of photoinduced changes is discussed.

Candida auris since it discovery in 2009 is becoming a severe threat to human health due to its very quickly spread, its worldwide high resistance to systemic antifungal drugs. In resource-constrained settings where several conditions are met for its emergence and spread, this worrisome fungus could cause large hospital and/or community-based outbreaks. This review aimed to summarize the available data on C. auris in Africa focusing on its epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile. Major databases were searched for articles on the epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile of C. auris in Africa. Out of 2,521 articles identified 22 met the inclusion criteria. In Africa, nearly 89% of African countries have no published data on C. auris. The prevalence of C. auris in Africa was 8.74%. The case fatality rate of C. auris infection in Africa was 39.46%. The main C. auris risk factors reported in Africa were cardiovascular disease, renal failure, diabetes, HIV, recent intake of antimicrobial drugs, ICU admissions, surgery, hemodialysis, parenteral nutrition and indwelling devices. Four phylogenetic clades were reported in Africa, namely clades I, II, III and IV. Candida auris showed a pan-African very high resistance rate to fluconazole, moderate resistance to amphotericin B, and high susceptibility to echinocandins. Finally, C. auris clade-specific mutations were observed within the ERG2, ERG3, ERG9, ERG11, FKS1, TAC1b and MRR1 genes in Africa. This systematic review showed the presence of C. auris in the African continent and a worrying unavailability of data on this resilient fungus in most African countries.

Natural sunlight activated persistent luminescence(PeL)is ideal candidate for optical information display in outdoors without the requirement of electric supply.Except the brightness and duration,the stability especially water resistance of the PeL materials is of significant importance for practical application,which remains a great obstacle up to date.Herein,we report a new sunlight activated PeL glass ceramic containing hexagonal Sr_(13)Al_(22)Si_(10)O_(66):Eu^(2+)crystals,which exhibits strong blue PeL and can last more than 200 h.The PeL can be charged by the full wavelengths located in AM 1.5G due to the broad distribution of traps in the crystal structure.The PeL is clearly observed by the naked eye even after 24 h upon sunlight irradiation irrespective of the weather,and the photoluminescence intensity only decreased~3.3%after storing in water for 365 d.We demonstrate its potential application for thermal and stress responsive display as well as long-term continuous security indication upon sunlight irradiation,which not only save vast energy and reduce environment pollution,but also are appropriate for outdoor usage.

The electrochemical conversion of sunlight by photoelectrochemical cells(PECs)is based on semiconductor electrodes that are interfaced with a liquid electrolyte.This approach is highly promising,first,because it can be employed for the generation of a chemical fuel(e.g.,H2)to store solar energy that can be used on-demand to generate electricity when the sun is not available.Second,it can be seen as a concept reminiscent of photosynthesis,where CO_(2) is converted into a valuable feedstock by solar energy.Thus,photoelectrochemical cells are sometimes referred to as“artificial leaves”.Silicon,being the main semiconductor in the electronics and photovoltaic sector,is a prime candidate to be used as the light absorber and the substrate for building photoelectrochemical cells.However,Si alone has“poor-to-no photoelectrochemical performance”.This is caused by its weak electrocatalytic activity for cathodic reactions(namely,the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER),the CO_(2) reduction reaction(CDRR),and the N2 reduction reaction)and by its deactivation in the anodic regime,prohibiting its use for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).This latter reaction is essential for supplying electrons to generate a solar fuel.Due to these problems,layers that both protect and are catalytically active are typically employed on Si photoelectrodes but require rather sophisticated manufacturing processes(e.g.,atomic layer or electron beam deposition),which hinders research and innovation in this field.Nevertheless,our group and others have demonstrated that these layers are not always required and that highly active and stable Si-based photoelectrodes can be manufactured using simple wet processes,such as drop casting,electroless deposition,or aqueous electrodeposition.In this Account,we first introduce the topic and the possible structures that can be easily obtained starting from commercial Si wafers.Then,we discuss strategies that have been employed to manufacture photocathodes based on p-type Si.Among these,we describe Si photocathodes c

Background Spermatozoa interact with oviduct secretions before fertilization in vivo but the molecular players of this dialog and underlying dynamics remain largely unknown.Our objectives were to identify an exhaustive list of sperm-interacting proteins(SIPs)in the bovine oviduct fluid and to evaluate the impact of the oviduct anatomical region(isthmus vs.ampulla)and time relative to ovulation(pre-ovulatory vs.post-ovulatory)on SIPs number and abundance.Methods Pools of oviduct fluid(OF)from the pre-ovulatory ampulla,pre-ovulatory isthmus,post-ovulatory ampulla,and post-ovulatory isthmus in the side of ovulation were collected from the slaughterhouse.Frozen-thawed bull sperm were incubated with OF or phosphate-buffered saline(control)for 60 min at 38.5℃.After protein extraction and digestion,sperm and OF samples were analyzed by nanoLC-MS/MS and label-free protein quantification.Results A quantitative comparison between proteins identified in sperm and OF samples(2333 and 2471 proteins,respectively)allowed for the identification of 245 SIPs.The highest number(187)were found in the pre-ovulatory isthmus,i.e.,time and place of the sperm reservoir.In total,41 SIPs(17%)were differentially abundant between stages in a given region or between regions at a given stage and 76 SIPs(31%)were identified in only one region×stage condition.Functional analysis of SIPs predicted roles in cell response to stress,regulation of cell motility,fertilization,and early embryo development.Conclusion This study provides a comprehensive list of SIPs in the bovine oviduct and evidences dynamic spatiotemporal changes in sperm-oviduct interactions around ovulation time.Moreover,these data provide protein candidates to improve sperm conservation and in vitro fertilization media.

Amorphous Ge-Sb-Se-Te chalcogenide films fabrication for potential environmental sensing and nonlinear photonics

Quaternary Ge-Sb-Se-Te chalcogenide thin films were fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering from Ge_(19)Sb_(17)Se_(64-x)Te_(x)(x=5,10,15,20)sputtering targets in order to select appropriate compositions for infrared sensor and optical nonlinear applications.An influence of chemical composition and deposition parameters on the optical properties,structure and wettability was thus studied.The amorphous thin films seem to be constituted by selenide entities that can include tellurium atoms in variable proportion such as[GeSe_(4-x)Te_(x)]and[SbSe_(3-x)Te_(x)](x=0,1,2)and Ge(Sb)-Ge(Sb)bonds according to Raman spectroscopy.Contact angle measurements of the thin films showed values of 68e71for water and their surface energies in the range of~36e39 mJ$m-2 seem suitable for surface functionalization required for photonic sensor development.Furthermore,the maximum nonlinearity at the telecom wavelength with respect to the highest figure of merit value was found for the thin film with composition Ge_(19)Sb_(17)Se56Te8 having nonlinear refractive index of 28×10^(-18) m2·W^(-1).Due to their low optical bandgap energies,they may find their full interest for nonlinear optics in the mid-infrared range.Wide IR transparency in combination with high(non)linear refractive indices make these materials attractive in the field of midIR sensing and optical nonlinear devices.
