Response surface method for modeling the removal of carbon dioxide from a simulated gas using water absorption enhanced with a liquid-film-forming device

This paper presents the results from using a physical absorption process to absorb gaseous CO2mixed with N2using water by producing tiny bubbles via a liquid-film-forming device（LFFD）that improves the solubility of CO2in *** influence of various parameters—pressure,initial CO2concentration,gas-to-liquid ratios,and temperature—on the CO2removal efficiency and its absorption rate in water were investigated and estimated thoroughly by statistical polynomial models obtained by the utilization of the response surface method（RSM）with a central composite design（CCD）.Based on the analysis,a high efficiency of CO2capture can be reached in conditions such as low pressure,high CO2concentration at the inlet,low gas/liquid ratio,and low *** instance,the highest removal efficiency in the RSM–CCD experimental matrix of nearly 80%occurred for run number 20,which was conducted at 0.30 MPa,CO2concentration of 35%,gas/liquid ratio of 0.71,and temperature of 15℃.Furthermore,the coefficients of determination,R^2,were 0.996 for the removal rate and 0.982 for the absorption rate,implying that the predicted values computed by the constructed models correlate strongly and fit well with the experimental *** results obtained provide essential information for implementing this method properly and effectively and contribute a promising approach to the problem of CO2capture in air pollution treatment.

AIM To evaluate the inhibitory effects of deferasirox(DFX) against hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) through basic and clinical *** In the basic study, the effect of DFX was investigated in three hepatoma cell lines(Hep G2, Hep3 B, and Huh7), as well as in an N-nitrosodiethylamine-induced murine HCC model. In the clinical study, six advanced HCC patients refractory to chemotherapy were enrolled. The initial dose of DFX was 10 mg/kg per day and was increased by 10 mg/kg per day every week, until the maximum dose of 30 mg/kg per day. The duration of a single course of DFX therapy was 28 consecutive days. In the event of dose-limiting toxicity(according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v.4.0), DFX dose was *** Administration of DFX inhibited the proliferation of hepatoma cell lines and induced the activation of caspase-3 in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. In the murine model, DFX treatment significantly suppressed the development of liver tumors(P < 0.01), and significantly upregulated the mR NA expression levels of hepcidin(P < 0.05), transferrin receptor 1(P < 0.05), and hypoxia inducible factor-1α(P < 0.05) in both tumor and non-tumor tissues, compared with control mice. In the clinical study, anorexia and elevated serum creatinine were observed in four and all six patients, respectively. However, reduction in DFX dose led to decrease in serum creatinine levels in all patients. After the first course of DFX, one patient discontinued the therapy. We assessed the tumor response in the remaining five patients; one patient exhibited stable disease, while four patients exhibited progressive disease. The one-year survival rate of the six patients was 17%.CONCLUSION We demonstrated that DFX inhibited HCC in the basic study, but not in the clinical study due to dose-limiting toxicities.

In order to get to the desired target inside the body,it is essential to investigate the needle-tissue coupling process and calculate the tissue deformation.A cantilever beam model is presented to predicting the deflection and bending angle of flexible needle by analyzing the distribution of the force on needle shaft during the procedure of needle insertion into soft ***,a finite element(FE)coupling model is proposed to simulate the needle-tissue interactive *** plane and spatial models are created to relate the needle and tissue *** with the cantilever beam model and the finite element needle-tissue coupling model,the simulation of needle-tissue interaction was carried out by the ABAQUS *** comparing experiments are designed to understand the needle-tissue interactions,by which the same points in the experiments and simulation are compared and *** results show that the displacements in x and z directions in the simulation can accord with the experiments,and the deformation inside the tissue mainly occurs in the axial *** study is beneficial to the robot-assisted and virtual needle insertion procedure,and to help the physicians to predict the inside tissue deformation during the treatments.

Higher levels of the lipophilic antioxidants coenzyme Q_(10) and vitamin E in long-lived termite queens than in short-lived workers

Termite queens and kings live longer than nonreproductive *** molecular mechanisms contributing to their long lifespan have been investigated;however,the underlying biochemical explanation remains *** Q(CoQ),a component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain,plays an essential role in the lipophilic antioxidant defense *** beneficial effects on health and longevity have been well studied in several ***,we demonstrated that long-lived termite queens have significantly higher levels of the lipophilic antioxidant CoQ_(10) than *** chromatography analysis revealed that the levels of the reduced form of CoQ_(10) were 4 fold higher in the queen's body than in the worker's *** addition,queens showed 7 fold higher levels of vitamin E,which plays a role in antilipid peroxidation along with CoQ,than ***,the oral administration of CoQ_(10) to termites increased the CoQ_(10) redox state in the body and their survival rate under oxidative *** findings suggest that CoQ_(10) acts as an efficient lipophilic antioxidant along with vitamin E in long-lived termite *** study provides essential biochemical and evolutionary insights into the relationship between CoQ_(10) concentrations and termite lifespan extension.

Establishment of mouse intestinal myofibroblast cell lines

AIM:To establish novel intestinal myofibroblast (IMF) cell lines from mouse colonic mucosa and investigate their biological characters. METHODS:Primary IMFs were isolated from mucosal tissues of mouse colon that was denuded of epithelial cells and smooth muscle layer. For immortalization, primary IMFs were transfected with simian virus 40 large T antigen (designated as LmcMF). We also isolated some primary IMFs that spontaneously became immortalized without transfection (designated as SmcMF). To check immortality and normality of these cells, we examined their proliferative ability and contact inhibition. Moreover, the expression levels of proteins characterizing IMFs [including α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), vimentin, desmin, and type Ⅰ collagen] and proteins associated with the immune response [such as toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), CD14, MD2, IκBα, and p-p38] were determined by Western blotting. The localization of several myofibroblast protein markers was also detected by immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS:The cell growth assay results show that both LmcMF and SmcMF cells proliferated logarithmically at least up to passage 20. In addition, the contact inhibition assays show that LmcMF and SmcMF stopped growing after the cells reached confluence. These data suggest that these 2 types of cells were immortalized without losing contact inhibition of growth. Moreover, both LmcMF and SmcMF, like primary IMFs, showed spindle-shaped appearance. The expression levels of key myofibroblast protein markers, including α-SMA, vimentin, and desmin, were also examined by the Western blotting and immunofluorescence analyses. Our results show that these cells were positive for α-SMA and vimentin, but not desmin, as well as that both LmcMF and SmcMF expressed type Ⅰ collagen at a lower level than primary IMFs. Delignification of disposable wooden chopsticks waste for fermentative hydrogen production by an enriched culture from a hot spring

Hydrogen （H2） production from lignocellulosic materials may be enhanced by removing lignin and increasing the porosity of the material prior to enzymatic hydrolysis. Alkaline pretreatment conditions, used to delignify disposable wooden chopsticks （DWC） waste, were investigated. The effects of NaOH concentration, temperature and retention time were examined and it was found that retention time had no effect on lignin removal or carbohydrate released in enzymatic hydrolysate. The highest percentage of lignin removal （41%） was obtained with 2% NaOH at 100℃, correlated with the highest carbohydrate released （67 mg/gpretreated DWC） in the hydrolysate. An enriched culture from a hot spring was used as inoculum for fermentative H2 production, and its optimum initial pH and temperature were determined to be 7.0 and 50℃, respectively. Furthermore, enzymatic hydrolysate from pretreated DWC was successfully demonstrated as a substrate for fermentative H2 production by the enriched culture. The maximum H2 yield and production rate were achieved at 195 mL H2/g total sugarsconsumed and 1 16 mL Hz/（***）, respectively.

The Impact of the Indian Ocean Dipole(IOD)and the El Nino Southern Oscillation(ENSO)event for Indonesian rainfall has been investigated for the period from 1950 to ***-annual change of IOD and ENSO indices are used to investigate their relationship with Indonesian *** using the wavelet transform method,we found a positive significant correlation between IOD and Indonesian rainfall on the time scale of nearly 2.5–4 ***,the positive significant correlation between ENSO(sea surface temperature anomaly at Nino3.4 area indices)and Indonesian rainfall exists for shorter than 2 years and between 5.5 to 6.5-year time scales.

Open source software (OSS) has become an indispensable part of society, not only for personal use but also for corporate use. Projects developed and operated by OSS are called open source projects, and the number of such projects is increasing. On the other hand, because anyone can participate in an open source project, the progress of the project is uncertain due to differences in project members’ skills, development environments, and time zones of activity. Therefore, many users and companies need to understand the development and operation status of open source project. Then, the developers carefully make decisions on upgrading or installing new OSS. In this paper, we focus on the maintenance effort estimation for open source projects considering uncertainty. Also, we evaluate the project quantitatively using Earned Value Management (EVM). Moreover, we examine the appropriateness of the model for predicting the maintenance effort expeditures. Furthermore, we discuss the appropriateness of this EVM method.

AIM: To investigate into the diversity of UGT1A1 polymorphism across three different districts in japan.and highlight genetic differences among the population in japan. METHODS: We enrolled 50 healthy volunteers from each of the yamaguchi (western part of japan., Kochi(southern part of japan. and Akita (northern part of japan. prefectures. Blood samples (7 mL) were collected from each participant and stored in EDTA for subsequent genotyping by fragment size analysis, direct sequencing and TaqMan assay of UGT1A1*28, UGT1A7*3/UGT1A9*22 and UGT1A1*93/UGT1A1*6/ UGT1A1*27/UGT1A1*60/UGT1A7 (-57), respectively. RESULTS: The only statistically significant differences in allele polymorphisms among the group examined were for UGT1A1*6. The Akita population showed more UGT1A1*6 heterozygosity (P = 0.0496). CONCLUSION: Our study revealed no regional diversity among UGT1A1, UGT1A7 or UGT1A9 polymorphisms in japan.
