Background The provision of environmental enrichments to Muscovy ducks could reduce the expression of the aggressive *** aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of black soldier fly(BSF)and yellow mealworm(YM)live larva provision on Muscovy duck performance,excreta corticosterone metabolites(ECM),behavior,and blood *** A total of 1263-day-old female Muscovy ducklings were allotted to 18 pens(6 replicates/treatment,7 birds/pen)and assigned to 3 experimental treatments:a control group fed commercial feed,and two experimental treatments fed commercial feed plus the 5%(based on the expected daily feed intake,as fed basis)of BSF and YM live larvae(BSF and YM groups,respectively).A two-phase feeding program was applied:starter(from 3 to 31 days of age)and grower-finisher(from 32 to 55 days of age).The live weight,average daily gain,average daily feed intake,and feed conversion ratio were *** consumption times were collected,and video recordings were performed during 3 periods(P)each day:the hour before(P1),during(P2),and after(P3)the larva *** were evaluated at 3,31,and ***,the total red and white blood cell counts,serum proteins,lipids,and liver and renal function serum enzymes were evaluated on 12 birds/*** The experimental treatment did not affect the growth performance of the birds(P>0.05).Larva consumption times were always similar between the two insect species,except at 14–18 days of age,were BSF larvae were consumed faster than YM larvae(Png activity during P2,and preening behavior increased in YM birds during *** C birds increased the attack behavior over the weeks(Png weeks 1–3 the YM group reduced the attack frequency(P1>P3;Pnally,the provision of live BSF and YM larvae significantly reduced the ECM at 55 days of age and the heterophil to lymphocyte ratio(Pnclusions Live BSF and YM larva supplementatio

Phenotypic Variation among and within Three Peppers Species(Capsicum)from Mexico

The phenotypic variation and its distribution among species,morphotypes,and among and within populations was estimated in 71 populations pertaining to 15 morphotypes of three domesticated species of Capsicum from *** were made in the states of Sinaloa,nayarit,Oaxaca,Tabasco,and Yucatán in two agroecosystems:Backyard-garden and *** phenotypic characteristics were analyzed through one-way variance analysis and multivariate analyses of principal components analysis(PCA)and hierarchical clustering using Ward’s *** study was performed in a uniform greenhouse experiment.A high variation was found among and within populations in all the measured *** the total variation,13.0%was distributed among species,27.9%among morphotypes,8.1%among populations,and 51.0%within *** plants grew in a uniform environment,these results indicate that the differences observed among and within species,morphotypes,and populations have a genetic *** and multivariate analyses clearly differentiated morphotypes,suggesting that the category of morphotypes must be used to nominate the infraspecific variation in the domesticated *** principal components analysis identified a total of 15 principal components that contributed to explain the total *** first two components explained 59.64%of the total variation and seven components explained more than 90%of the total *** the measured characteristics,number of seed per fruit,weight of the fruit,width of the fruit,length of the fruit,stem diameter,days to flowering,and height of the plant contributed to component 1 variation,whereas width of the leaf,length of the leaf,and number of locules,number of fruits and number of seeds per plant contributed to component *** hierarchical clustering separated the populations and the morphotypes in two large different *** group consisted of populations collected in monoculture conditions and the oth

The development of plant-derived products to control Bemisia tabaci Genn.(Hemiptera:Aleyrodidae)is an urgent need for production of horticultural *** extracts and essential oils of several species of the genus Eugenia(Myrtaceae)have shown insecticidal *** southern Mexico,leaf extracts from Eugenia winzerlingii showed nematicidal effect but its insecticidal properties have not been ***,the objective of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of aqueous and organic extracts from *** leaves on *** egg,nymph and adult stages,and else to explore its nursery ***,extracts of this species were obtained by maceration with different polarity *** were carried out on Capsicum chinense *** assays showed that aqueous and total crude ethanol(TCE)extracts necrosed the eggs(LC50=0.21%w/v and 4.68 mg/mL,respectively),whereas hexane,ethyl acetate(ETA),residual ethanol and TCE extracts affected the nymphs(LC50=0.25-4.85 mg/mL).In adults,oviposition inhibition by free choice assay indicated that TCE and ETA extracts had major activity(EC50=14.62 and 27.86μg/cm2,respectively).On other hand,the sexual and vegetative propagation of *** showed that this species can be easily cultivated by *** conclusion,extracts of *** leaves are highly effective in controlling *** extract,in particular,was toxic to three stages of *** plant could be a potential alternative to develop a novel botanical insecticide to manage this destructive pest.

To determine whether levels of beta human choriogonadotropin (β - hCG) during the second trimester are a predictor of pre-eclampsia. Methods. A prospective study of 784 women was conducted between their 16th and 20th week of pregnancy. Primigravidas and multigravidas were analyzed separately, and the cutoff point was determined using a receiver operating characteristic curve. The accuracy of β - hCG levels in the prediction of preecla-mpsiawas evaluated. The likelihood ratios were calculated for different levels of β - hCG in both groups. Results. Pre-eclampsia prevalence was 7.1% among primigravidas and 4.6% among multigravidas. The cutoff concentration was 2.0 MoM in both groups. For primigravidas and multigravidas, respectively, the area below the curve was 0.96 and 0.95; sensitivity was 88.5% and 100% ; specificity was 92.0% and 85.6% ; positive predictive value was 0.46 and 0.25; and negative predictive value was 0.99 and 1.0. With a cutoff concentration of 2.0 MoM of β - hCG, the positive likelihood ratio was 11.1 in primigravidas and 6.9 in multigravidas. Conclusion. This study shows that measuring levels of β - hCG during the second trimester of pregnancy is useful in clinical practice to identify pregnant women who will develop pre-eclampsia.

Onto the sense of smell in macaws, amazons and toucans: can they use volatile cues of fruits to make foraging decisions?

Over the past decades,empirical evidence has been accumulated indicating that olfactory information plays a fundamental role in bird life ***,many aspects of avian olfaction remain poorly *** purpose was to broaden the knowledge about the importance of the sense of smell in some neglected bird groups:psittaciformes and ramphastids,and to compare how the response varied between the *** of the lack of information about the use of chemical cues for locating food in fruit-eating species,we also aimed to delve into this *** conducted a 3-choice(water/vinegar/papaya and banana juice)scent test in 5 Costa Rican native species:scarlet macaw(Ara macao),red-lored amazon(Amazona autumnalis),yellow-naped amazon(Amazona auropalliata),keel-billed toucan(Ramphastos sulfuratus),and yellow-throated toucan(Ramphastos ambiguus).Results revealed that macaws and toucans allocated signiﬁcantly more time to interacting with the fruit scent container,indicating that these species can perceive the volatile chemicals emitted by ripe fruits and that they can use this information to make foraging ***,amazons did not dedicate more time to interact with the fruit *** research provides theﬁrst evidence of the ability to exploit chemical volatile cues in macaws and toucans.

The following paper reports on a comparative study of the effects of two types of carbon nanotubes,namely multiwall(MWCnT)and single-wall(SWCnT)carbon nanotube,on the properties of 3D-printed parts produced with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS)nanocomposites with various CnT loadings of5-10 wt.%.Quasi-static tensile properties and Vicat softening temperature of 3D-printed parts were enhanced with the increasing CnT *** highest enhancement in tensile properties was observed for the ABS/CnT nanocomposites at 10 wt.%filler loading.3D-printed ABS/SWCnT composites showed higher tensile modulus,better creep stability and higher Vicat ***,the strength of ABS/SWCnT 3D samples is relatively lower than that of ABS/*** addition,3D-printed parts exhibited anisotropic electrical conductive behaviour,which has a conductivity of through-layer of about2-3 orders of magnitude higher than *** highest conductivity of 3D-printed samples reached25.2 S/m,and 9.3 S/m for ABS/MWCnT and ABS/SWCnT composites at 10 wt.%,*** results obtained,*** successful fuse filament fabrication and the consequent electromechanical properties,confirm that these 3D printable nanocomposite could be properly utilized for the production,and application up to about 90°C,of thermoelectric devices and/or resistors for flexible circuits.

Antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive potential of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl.&Cham

ObjectiveTo evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant and acute toxicity of extracts obtained from a successive extraction with solvents of ascending polarity [hexane, hex; chloroform, CHCl3 and ethanol (EtOH)] of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl. & *** antioxidant potential was evaluated by 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, the ferric reducing/antioxidant power assays and by determining the total phenolic content. The anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects were evaluated using the in vivo croton oil-induced ear edema, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced ear edema, carrageenan-induced paw edema, acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin murine models. The acute toxicity was tested using the Lorke’s method in *** EtOH extract was the most active for the antioxidant potential tests diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (68.70% inhibition), ferric reducing/antioxidant power [(2 431.30 ± 102.10) mmol Fe2+ and total polyphenols content (215.80 ± 8.50) meqAG/g]. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by topical application of croton oil (2 mg/ear dose) where the EtOH extract showed the strongest activity compared to the control group (45.13% inhibition), whereas in the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate model, at the same dose, the CHCl3 extract showed the highest inhibition (42.88%). In the carrageenan induced edema model, the EtOH extract showed a stronger inhibition compared to indomethacin (56.34% and 50.70% at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg of extract, respectively) during the first hour. Similarly, the same extract showed the highest analgesic activity (30.60% inhibition) in the acetic acid contortion assay, and in the formalin test it showed a greater effect with respect to the control group in both *** work confirms the value of Ternstroemia sylvatica as an important anti-inflammatory and analgesic plant, whose mechanism seems to be associated to its antioxidant effects, and supports
